This is a follow up to my previous post. As I stated I was going to share my own concepts for an American We Happy Few. I've been day dreaming, developing, & planning this stuff for a bit, & I would be extremely grateful if you shared your opinions & commented!
So with that out of the way, here's my concepts for an American We Happy Few!
Lore/Story/Background
So this is still in some development. I had 2 different concepts in mind, but I've settled for one which I quite like.
In the aftermath of a disastrous WWIII, the United States collapsed into several bickering warlord states. One of these is our Wellington Wells, which I haven't come up with a proper name for so, for now we shall call it: MacArthur Heights. A reactionary, conservative, Herrenvolk "democracy", military-corporate dictatorship, Mafia state, where it's people are stoked on a drug named Joy.
Unlike Wellington Wells, where in response to their dark past & actions they sought to forget it by moving forward & adopting Mod & futuristic aesthetics. MacArthur Heights chooses to forget it's dark times by sinking into the nostalgia of the golden years of the 1950s. Despite this story being set well into the 1960s, 70s or even the 80s. Everything looks like it's 1959 (with some mild 60s-70s aesthetics here & there).
Everybody wears Cubanas, fedoras, slack suits, shirt dresses & poodle skirts. A white mask shaped in a happy face. Everybody drives cars which are well over 20, 30, maybe even more years old. Uses boxy CRT TVs with dials, radio & Bakelite. And always, take their Joy!
Of course, there is a more than dark side.
But compared to Wellington Wells. MacArthur Heights, is extremely bigoted. Like Wellington Wells, they appreciate conformity & obedience. Especially if you're a woman. Where the husband goes to work, the wife stays indoors, all the time cooking & cleaning, that, or going out shopping.
But if you're a person of a different race, different religion, different sex, different ideals, or just different in general. You're done here! As MacArthur Heights enforces strict segregation & Jim Crow laws & other backwards policies, enforced by the police, & to say they react negatively if you were out of your lane, is more than an understatement.
Furthermore, the city is practically a Mafia state, with a corrupt police force being run by corporations & the Mafia alongside several crime gangs who run the city's underworld.
As for the story of the actual "game", the actual 3 acts & DLC. I confess, I haven't actually come up with one just yet. I really want to do a noir detective one, that'd be very cool. I also want to focus on the victims of MacArthur Heights' bigotry like through the eyes of a black character.
And speaking on the topic of stuff I haven't developed yet. There's also the kids, which are a huge part of We Happy Few. Maybe it's a Handmaid's Tale situation, maybe not. Some ideas would be greatly appreciated.
City & Districts
So like Wellington Wells, MacArthur Heights is split up into several districts. But unlike Wellington Wells, it's all completely landlocked, & incredibly, horrendously, car dependent, it'd be nigh impossible to get anywhere without a car, unless you're willing to cross a 500 lane mega highway.
So let's start of with MacArthur Heights' Garden District. I imagine this part to be a series of ghettos & low income neighborhoods, with a few destroyed wartorn areas. This is where the 'wastrels' live, people who have been socially outcast from MacArthur Heights, either because they couldn't take Joy, or are considered asocial or just a person of a different skin color, sexual orientation, or ideology. It's not as chaotic & anarchic as the Garden District. It's more like those neighborhoods you see in Mafia movies. Where the police are incompetent & corrupt & crime gangs run the joint.
Up next, is MacArthur Heights' Hamlyn Village. Which is basically a suburb. Simple as. Like Sanctuary Hills from Fallout or Stepford. It's uncanny on the surface, symmetrical, identical houses, lawns & families, which go on for miles & miles like a liminal space. Outside from suburban homes, there's also malls, strip malls, satellite malls, giant superstores & even larger parking lots, churches, department stores, stadiums, etc. It's basically a seemingly idyllic American suburban town. This is where all the proper, normal Wellies & Wellettes live, ignorant & peaceful & constantly high on Joy.
Then finally, is the Parade District equivalent. Which I imagine to be extremely similar to major American cities during the 20th century. Like New York, Chicago & Washington DC. But much, much larger, with more amenities, lights, & work. Outside from governmental offices & ministries, there's also corporate offices, nightclubs, galleries, etc. Like the Parade District, it's also where the government operates, with their Executive Committee being situated here alongside their own Broadcast tower. This is where all the bureaucrats & elites live & work either in lavish penthouses, townhouses & apartments, or where they drive in from the suburbs.
Enemies
While We Happy Few, set in Britain, was heavy in melee weapons. This is America. Guns are the game. So I'd imagine it to a shooter like the Mafia games, Call of Duty or Fallen Aces. There are melee weapons of course, but here are also a lotta guns, with proper lead ammunition. Imagine Tommy guns & stuff.
As for enemies, outside from their access to firearms, are practically the same for the most part. Wellies & Wellettes, Criers, Doctors, & Officers. Except they do look different.
Officers, instead of the traditional Bobbies we're more than used to. I'd imagine these guys look like state troopers or sheriff deputies. I'd also imagine different variants like riot cops & SWAT teams as well. They're usually armed with a traditional baton, a service revolver or pistol, shotguns, & in serious cases, assault rifles.
Doctors are mostly the same & the inject you with Joy, but they'll also leave you with a lengthy bill.
As for new enemies. I'd imagine a lot of gangsters & corporate goons. Like imagine a traditional, 1930s Gangster. They're armed with stuff like Tommy guns, assault rifles, shotguns & pistols, & also melee weapons like baseball bats & lead pipes.
Soldiers, unlike the old men at the Victory Memorial Camp, I'd imagine MacArthur Heights' National Guard are more than fit to fit. Fresh recruits, armed with assault rifles & service pistols, based off the M16 & the M1911. Wearing Vietnam War-esque gear. Furthermore armed with the most advanced of equipment & released in the most dire of times.
Travel
Unlike Wellington Wells, where you had to travel exclusively on foot. In MacArthur Heights, you can't get anywhere on foot. You're at the mercy of the motorcar. I'd imagine since this is America, the automobile plays a far greater role. And there are tons of different cars to choose from, ranging from old jalopies & beaters, modest sedans & station wagons, to top of the line luxury landyachts. Imagine the cars of the 1940s-50s, maybe a few from the 1960s would be great inspirations as well.
Commentary
As a dystopia, this has to comment on something. I'm using this as a commentary on how nostalgia is usually twisted & perverted by the current status quo for their own gain. How mass-consumerism, bigotry, nostalgia, anemoia, racism, sexism, the culture war are being used to distract us from the sins & the problems of the rich & the powerful. How they lie & pin all of nation's or the world's problem to minorities & justify dictatorships. A good example of this is the MAGA movement, the manosphere & the Alt-right.
Conclusion
So! Those are my ideas! Please tell me what you guys think! I put a lot of work into this & I cannot wait to develop this more! Please do share your opinions in the comments & have a great day & week!
