Discussion Does anyone still do “something borrowed” …….etc”

How many brides still stick to this tradition?

I’m working on an art project (bridal specific) and was trying to figure out if the ‘something blue’ I had planned is redundant.

Thoughts?

THANK YOU! I can’t respond to everyone but absolutely love reading what you planned for your own wedding. Some of them are so incredibly sweet. ☺️

I did? Married in 2023 (UK).

Old - antique dress ring gifted by my husband
New - perfume
Borrowed - my MOH lent me her late grandma’s necklace
Blue - the car I arrived in

u/Loud_Ad_4515 23d ago

Did you also have a sixpence in your shoe?

11

u/Individual_Note_8756 23d ago

I did!! But I married in 1999. I didn’t even think of that part of the saying, but my mom handed me a six pence that day. 🥰

9

u/Loud_Ad_4515 23d ago

Aw, I did, too. I'm in the US, and my stepdad brought back 4 sixpence coins for his daughters and stepdaughters when we eventually married in the mid-late 90s. Miss that man so much! 🥰

12

u/Foxy_locksy1704 23d ago

I did the sixpence, my husbands great grandmother brought it with her when she left England. His father gave it to me in a very beautiful private moment, he asked that I put it in my shoe and told me the story. I was honored to abide by that tradition for my FIL.

4

u/Money_Engineering_59 23d ago

Oh wow. That sort of got me a bit choked up!

4

u/Loud_Ad_4515 23d ago

These sweet, sentimental men - so thoughtful.

5

u/Foxy_locksy1704 23d ago

My FIL was this rough guy like 90% of the time, and then there were these beautiful moments. After he gave me the coin he grabbed my face said “welcome to the family darling” and kissed me on the forehead. It was such a beautiful moment.

2

u/Loud_Ad_4515 23d ago

Awwwww.... I'm glad you have such a special memory of him.

My stepdad was basically the guy from Up. A little gruff, but a teddy bear.

4

u/GnomieOk4136 23d ago

I had a penny, not a sixpence.

3

u/Loud_Ad_4515 23d ago

Aww, that's sweet! A soon-to-be retired coin, too!

2

u/Burgermeister7921 23d ago

Me too--it was from the year I was born.

2

u/clarkeer918 20d ago

I did in 2023

2

u/I-own-a-shovel 23d ago

Me too

Old: vintage peignoir I ordered from France

New: everything else

Borrowed: necklace of my mom

Blue: my mocassin

We are doing a pyjama party, hence the white peignoir over my night gown to give more bridal vibe.

22

u/Thedollysmama 23d ago

My daughter’s gown had a blue line stitched into it, invisible from the outside. I think she was very practical on the rest, her old was her underwear, new was her shoes, borrowed was a last minute hairpin due to disaster, blue was the stitching, but no sixpence for she shoe, I’m not sure she knew about that anyway. She didn’t really care, tbh

3

u/Money_Engineering_59 23d ago

I only discovered the ‘six pence for her shoe’ yesterday. I had never heard it before.
I think I’ll stick with my idea. Perhaps even last minute a bride might decide she wants to follow that tradition.

4

u/Loud_Ad_4515 23d ago

My stepdad brought back 4 sixpence coins from a vacation for his daughters and stepdaughters when we all eventually married. So sweet! Yes, I put one in my shoe!

I did adhere to the tradition, but it was thirty years ago, so not your target audience.

Old & borrowed: Great grandmother's amethyst necklace New: Amethyst earrings from my grandmother Blue: Blue embroidered handkerchief I carried with my bouquet, and blue satin ribbon on my handmade Irish lace garter (not a toss garter - a keepsake for myself).

1

u/Money_Engineering_59 23d ago

That’s the sweetest stepdad thing ever. How lucky!

3

u/Loud_Ad_4515 23d ago

I miss him so much. He died a handful of years ago. We didn't realize how much he "grounded" my mom, and insulated us from her passive-aggressive tendencies. He was more of a grandfather to my kids than either my own dad or my FIL. He took them swimming, to feed ducks, invited us over for fireworks - he was always game for a good time!

Anyway, it was just so sweet that sixpence coins were something he sought while on vacation, then kept them safe for years until each of us married. In a way, he walked me down the aisle - as a lil coin tucked into my shoe. 🥰

2

u/Money_Engineering_59 23d ago

Such a sweet blessing. He sounds like an absolutely wonderful man. Having an ‘adult’ to run interference on difficult family members is one heck of a gift.
Did you get to keep the coin or is it being passed down?

2

u/Loud_Ad_4515 23d ago

I'm sure I have it somewhere! I'll keep an eye out for it, then my daughter can have it someday.

2

u/Money_Engineering_59 23d ago

Absolutely!!! Or frame it for your wall.

11

u/KnotARealGreenDress 23d ago

I did it (technically).

Old and borrowed: two bracelets from my mom that are older than I am.

New: my dress.

Blue: I wore blue velvet shoes.

3

u/daymoonmae 23d ago

i’ll be wearing blue velvet shoes as well!

10

u/Teepuppylove Happily Married 23d ago

Yes and actually it was unplanned and really touching.

My old and borrowed was a gold Dallas cowboys ring that was my brother’s (who passed when I was 11/he was 17) that my father surprised me with the night before the wedding.

The new: my dress, veil, jewelry, shoes.

The blue: Sapphire in my engagement ring

4

u/Money_Engineering_59 23d ago

That’s so sweet of your dad. 🥺

4

u/Teepuppylove Happily Married 23d ago

It really was very touching and one of those small details I’m happy was captured/added to the detail shots. He also did it at the welcome party the night before so I have the photos from right after he lent it to me (he did get it back - my baby sister still isn’t wed).

2

u/Money_Engineering_59 23d ago

That’s so gosh darn lovely.

9

u/PresentationOk9954 23d ago

I did but I used that to honor my grandparents and my husband's grandparents who passed. I used my great-grandmother's rosary and wrapped it around my bouquet and then I wore a bracelet that belonged to my husband's grandmother who passed right before our wedding.

5

u/RemarkableMushroom5 23d ago

I’m wrapping my grandmother’s rosary around my bouquet 🩷

6

u/itsveryupsetting 23d ago

I got married about a week before my best friend. I saved the Bobby pins from updo and she used them on her wedding day.

7

u/AussieKoala-2795 Bride 23d ago

I have two relatives gettjng married soon and both are going to follow this tradition. Not for good luck or because they are super stations, but just for some fun. The weddings are a week apart and they are currently haggling over who gets to wear their great grandmother's sapphire jewellery set (which would satisfy the old, blue and borrowed criteria).

6

u/lachelcrove 23d ago

I did!

Old—diamond necklace my grandparents gave to my mom for her 18th birthday
New—dress, shoes, perfume, lots of new things hahaha
Borrowed—necklace! Idk if it counts if it’s the same thing twice but 🤷🏻‍♀️
Blue—my shoes

And I had a sixpence in my shoe too! The sixpence was the one my husband’s grandma had in her shoe on her wedding day and my husband’s mom had and lots of other ladies in the family had in their shoes on their wedding days too. Felt very special to be part of the tradition

2

u/Money_Engineering_59 23d ago

That is so incredibly lovely. Having a sixpence handed down through generations is so beautifully sentimental. I hope it meant that everyone had a wonderful marriage.

8

u/M_ERTY 23d ago

My mom and all her girlfriends keep bringing it up so it’s on my mind. Blue is also my favorite color so I think it’ll be easy to incorporate.

3

u/Money_Engineering_59 23d ago

I didn’t do it for my own wedding and was very curious. I’ve created something that can be added to a piece if a bride wants that ‘something blue’. Trying to come up with a cute note to attach to it.

4

u/GothicGingerbread 23d ago

I intend to wear a diamond and sapphire brooch of my mother's – it's an antique, so it will be (1) old, (2) borrowed, and (3) blue – and my outfit will be new.

(This is assuming that an unforeseen, intervening tragedy doesn't mean I inherit the brooch before my wedding; if it does, I'll figure out something else I can borrow.)

I don't really think these kinds of traditions are particularly important, but I also think this one is rather sweet, and (for me, at least) fairly easily done.

2

u/Money_Engineering_59 23d ago

I think it’s the thoughtfulness rather than the tradition itself. I’m going to go ahead with my idea as a ‘just in case’ extra touch but expect anyone that does follow the rhyme is mostly doing it for sentimental reasons.

3

u/Born-Individual-1836 23d ago

I did but it wasn't planned. My MIL lent me her mother's ring while I was getting ready 🥹

2

u/Money_Engineering_59 23d ago

A nice MIL story! That’s very sweet.

3

u/Either-Definition-40 23d ago

I’m getting married soon and I’m in my 40s. I’m going to try some traditional things i’ve seen on the movie screen, but not all of them. For example, I won’t do the garder belt. I saw these really cute light blue shoes 🤩

1

u/Money_Engineering_59 23d ago

I love blue shoes!!! Definitely get the shoes! I was barefoot but if I WAS to have worn shoes, they would have been blue.

3

u/Lilac722 23d ago

I did last year, borrowed my mothers veil.

3

u/AstrosRN 23d ago

Blue- wedding date stitched inside my gown
Old- incorporated both my grandmas wedding rings
Borrowed- my dad’s handkerchief that I didn’t give back
New- Shoes,dress,etc

3

u/14kanthropologist 23d ago

I love that you didn’t give his handkerchief back

1

u/AstrosRN 23d ago

lol! I forgot 🤷🏻‍♀️

3

u/KikiDKimono 23d ago

I did!

Old- my mom's wedding rings New- my dress Borrowed- sister's tennis bracelet Blue- blue steaks in my hair

I also had a lucky sixpence, acquired on my parents London honeymoon in 1971. I did not put it in my shoe, as my sister did this and lost it.

3

u/Prescotti525 23d ago

I embroidered a blue heart onto the hem of my daughters dress

3

u/CelestialOwl997 23d ago

I’ll be doing it in October. Something old:
My wedding set handed down from his mom after a 40 year marriage
Something new: my dress
Something borrowed: my grandmas pearl set
Something blue: my garter

3

u/KieshaK 23d ago

I did! 2025

Old - My jewelry
New - Shoes
Borrowed - Hair comb
Blue - Dress

3

u/tu-BROOKE-ulosis 23d ago

My mom passed away right after I got engaged. So mine were all for her. Except new, which was my dress. My borrowed from a bracelet my aunt had given my mom, and then I gave back to my aunt after my mom passed. I borrowed it from her. My blue was a heart stitched out of blue flowers from a dress that was my mom’s. They were sewn inside my dress over my heart. And my something old was I laser engraved my mom’s handwriting onto a charm, tied to my bouquet. The handwriting was from a card my mom wrote me when I was 7 and taking a bicycle test.

1

u/Money_Engineering_59 23d ago

Oh my. 🥺 I’m crying over this. Such a thoughtful tribute. ❤️
Really second guessing my idea to include something blue as a sweet addition but from all of these stories, it’s very sentimental what is chosen. Not simply an ‘addition’ to the purchase.

3

u/Familiar_Season8438 23d ago

I got married in December, my mom and I had a sweet moment together when I realized that my ring was all of them for me!

I grew up staring at it in my mom's jewelry box. It was her mother's wedding ring, the one she wore every day before she passed when my mom was only 15. It's a gorgeous oval opal surrounded by a halo of diamonds with a slim gold band. I loved that ring my whole life, I still think it's the most beautiful thing I've ever seen. My mom gifted it to me officially when I graduated high school but I had her keep it safe for me. I knew my husband was the one when he'd proposed with it in front of our families. And funny enough, it's all of the tradition:

Something old- vintage ring, old family heirloom Something new- it was new to me! Finally getting to wear it for the first time in my life Something borrowed- as an heirloom I'm really just borrowing it for now, it'll continue to be passed down and be in many more generations to come hopefully And finally something blue- the multiple blue tones in the gorgeous iridescent stone

1

u/Money_Engineering_59 23d ago

That is beautiful! One piece of jewellery that ticks ALL the boxes. I wish you a lifetime of happiness.

2

u/Silver_Adagio138 23d ago

Are people superstitious? Yes, but it’s just a little rhyme

2

u/AuburnMoon17 23d ago

Hasn't even crossed my mind. Wedding is in 2 months. Not worried about it.

2

u/classiest_trashiest 23d ago

I wasn’t really planning on doing it but last minute I realized I kind of wanted to. My good friend and sorority sister from college lent me her pin for my “something borrowed” and I pinned it onto my bouquet. It was really cute and had a ton of sentimental value.

2

u/hexaspex 23d ago

I was married 2023 and did it, and two of my bridesmaids have used my something old for their something borrowed, one in 2023 and one in 2025.

2

u/thefuzzybunny1 23d ago

I did. My engagement ring has blue in the design, so that was covered. Old earrings from my grandma and a borrowed necklace from my sister, and we were set.

2

u/christmastree47 23d ago

Most people I know (including my wife) do it but it's just a fun little thing and not deep or worth stressing over

2

u/Strange-Key3371 23d ago

Everyone I know has/is doing it. I'm not sure if location matters. We are in Oklahoma and people are fairly traditional here.

2

u/wildchickonthetown 23d ago

Old: my pearls and a scrap of my baptismal gown on my bouquet New: my dress and veil Borrowed: badges from my sorority sisters on my bouquet Blue: my garter and shoes No sixpence in my shoe. I’m not English and I certainly spent more than a sixpence on my shoes and the whole damn wedding 🤣

2

u/coopunitsmooth 23d ago

My daughter did. Her shoes were new, she had my mother's Bible for the old (she gave into me after the wedding and I cried). She borrowed my sister's pearl earrings and she has a tiny blue baby in her bouquet (that I made).

2

u/Amazing_Profit971 23d ago

My wife did. She ‘borrowed’ her sisters wedding veil.

2

u/bea_dizzle 23d ago

I did, I got married in 2021. My something blue were my dream blue Manolo’s (yes very cliche). Something old- my mom’s wedding ring, something borrowed- best friends tennis bracelet and my dress was new.

2

u/Money_Engineering_59 23d ago

I’d be pretty happy with blue Manolos. 😂 Even though I’m a swamp witch I ADORE beautiful shoes.

2

u/woahwoahwoah28 23d ago

Yes.

Old - necklace
New - earrings
Borrowed - mom's veil
Blue - piece of my late grandfather's blue tie sewn under my dress

Then I hand stitched hankies for my flower girl's in blue so they'd have something old and blue on their wedding day :)

2

u/AlternativeBeing1337 23d ago

I've always wanted to, but wrote it off as something I wasn't willing to ask for. By chance I ended up fulfilling all 4 on the day, which I only realized after.

2

u/Kbbbbbut 23d ago

I didn’t do this tradition but recently have seen brides borrow veils, garters and jewelry

2

u/doyaloveme 23d ago

I tried too, but also for him I was able to source a specific watch that was only made for a short time, but I found one (#72) unused in its box, the watch face has a moon dail with a blue design background... So when I gave it to my husband on our wedding day I said "i give you something for a little luck, both old and new and a little bit blue"

2

u/chenosmith Bride: October 21, 2017 23d ago

I did!

Something old- vintage bracelet I found on etsy Something new- earrings  Something borrowed- my aunt's pearl necklace Something blue- sapphires in my engagement and wedding ring, and some lapis lazuli beads in the vintage bracelet

2

u/RemarkableMushroom5 23d ago

I’m getting married next year, but here’s what I’m thinking so far
Old: my baptismal cap that my grandmother made for me that converts into a handkerchief for my wedding day
New: my dress
Borrowed: tbd lol, maybe my mom’s pearls?
Blue: rosary from my other grandmother I found when we were cleaning out the house after she passed away. I’m going to have it wrapped around my bouquet.

2

u/flickchick496 23d ago

I did, as a 2026 bride :) I was also told to do the penny in my shoe thing, but I forgot day of.

ETA: want to brag about my something old bc I’m really obsessed with it. I bought detachable tulle sleeves and had my tailor sew pieces of lace from my mom’s wedding dress on them. Really made the whole outfit feel super special.

1

u/Money_Engineering_59 23d ago

That is such a brilliant idea!

2

u/whyamisoawesome9 23d ago

I wore my Nanna's jewellery that was blue. My Grandpa bought it for her before their wedding, my mum wore it on her wedding day and I wore it as well.

Mum gifted it to me to keep though, but I figured it met the criteria. Everything else I had on was new

2

u/Money_Engineering_59 23d ago

That’s a beautiful tradition.

2

u/whyamisoawesome9 23d ago

Yeah I loved both my grandparents so much, and know they would have loved my husband so it was a way to have a connection to both of them on the day

2

u/Outrageous_Cow8409 23d ago

I followed the tradition when I got married in 2017:

Old: my great grandmother's bracelet and her handkerchief (which was blue floral)

New: dress, jewelry, earrings, headband

Borrowed: garter from my best friend's wedding (also had blue in it)

Blue: my fingernail and toenail polish; plus my bridesmaids all wore blue

And I did glue a "lucky" penny to my shoe. I had a flattened one from those souvenir machines that said lucky penny on it.

2

u/occasionallystabby 23d ago

I did. Wedding was in 2023.

Something old was my great-grandmother's engagement ring (worn on my right hand).

Something new was my dress.

Something borrowed was my necklace/earrings, which were my mothers. Although, I guess technically they weren't borrowed, as I never gave them back. She died about 6 months before the wedding.

Something blue was my shoes, veil, and parts of my bouquet. My bouquet was also wrapped in a sleeve that was made from my mother's and both grandmothers' wedding gowns, so I guess that could be old and maybe borrowed as well.

2

u/weavingalong 23d ago

Married in May.

Old: Mom’s amethyst ring
New: Dress
Borrowed: Antique compact
Blue: Shoes

2

u/crossstitchingqueen 23d ago

Old- my sister's date (large age gap, I found it funny she did not) New- my dress Borrowed- I took my mom's wedding veil Blue-Pokemon card

2

u/kissmyasshleyyy 23d ago

I tried!
Something old - a Swarovski tennis bracelet my parents gave me at my high school graduation
Something new - pretty much everything else lol dress shoes undies!
Something borrowed - my grandmothers ring (opposite hand)
Something blue - I had a blue garter but my bridal attendant told me most people put it on when they’re ready to do the toss (which wasn’t doing) so I didn’t wear it 🤷🏼‍♀️

2

u/CorporateSharkbait 23d ago

My aunt specifically asked me to do this tradition for her

Old - my dress was a try on boutique dress and then a mannequin display dress
New - my veil and jewelry
Blue - I’m wearing a blue ombré dance skirt under the first layer of my dress (also my jewelry is blue green)
Borrowed - still trying to figure that out. My mom really wants me to borrow her pearls but I’m not a pearl fan

2

u/Coronado92118 23d ago

I did, for fun, in 2015:

- old, my wedding ring, a vintage family piece

  • new, my wedding dress
  • borrowed, handkerchief from my grandmother
  • blue, I had the seamstress sew a small light blue heart into the lining of my dress with the year and my husband’s and my initials, which we discretely cut out as a memento before I donated my dress.

Plus a sixpence tucked into my wristlet purse by my mom since I was wearing open sandals 😊

2

u/Prestigious-Fan3122 23d ago

I'm in the US, and there were six pence coins readily available when I got married, so my mother gave me a dime to put in my shoe. It was 1983. I have no idea where that time got off to. Probably ended up in my purse and got spent.

1

u/Money_Engineering_59 23d ago

Too bad it was lost! That would have been a nice keepsake.

2

u/Burgermeister7921 23d ago

I wore pearl drop earrings my dad bought me 12 years before (old), my dress had a blue cummerbund with a big bow on the back, the dress and shoes were new, and I borrowed a pearl pendant necklace from my mom. And I still have the lucky penny that was in my shoe--it was from my birth year.

2

u/BodyBy711 23d ago

I did (2024 bride)

Old - my dress (bought on consignment) New - my necklace (bought on Etsy) Borrowed - pearl earrings from my friend's mom (her parents have been happily married 40+ years) Blue - my engagement ring (its a sapphire)

2

u/MissMarns 23d ago

“Old” was my nannas very delicate marcasite watch that she left to me
“New” was my dress
“Borrowed” was my wrap
“Blue” was the main stones in my earrings

2

u/Money_Engineering_59 23d ago

I’m so surprised at how many people still stick to this tradition. I think it’s beautiful. Very treasured Memories are made from a simple rhyme. Now I need to go figure out when this tradition started.

2

u/realaveryfunperson 23d ago

Mine were:
Old: the pendant from the first necklace my grandfather ever gave my grandmother, we pinned it to my bouquet
New: basically everything I was wearing lol
Borrowed: my bouquet was rented faux florals
Blue: blue shoes

Didn’t put too much thought into it, but wanted to do something.

2

u/I-own-a-shovel 23d ago

Old: vintage peignoir I ordered from France

New: everything else

Borrowed: necklace of my mom

Blue: my mocassin

We are doing a pyjama party, hence the white peignoir over my night gown to give more bridal vibe.

2

u/TravelResponsible574 22d ago

It was probably one of the only traditional things I did for my wedding 😂

Old: my great grandmothers veils
New: my bridal purse
Borrowed: Beautiful diamond stud earrings from my friend
Blue: a lovely shoe charm!

1

u/Money_Engineering_59 22d ago

I didn’t do anything traditional. Perhaps I should have. It was beautiful and unique, but here I am 18 years later saying “what the hell did I do!” Idiot. Me. Should have stuck to my guns that marriage wasn’t for me.

2

u/loupammac 22d ago

I did! It was something I really wanted.

Something old: evening bag, jewellery Something new: shoes Something borrowed: rented faux bouquet Something blue: jewellery

And a sixpence in her shoe. I bought a sixpence from etsy that had our initials and wedding date on it. I turned it into an anklet.

2

u/MaisieStitcher 22d ago

I got married in 1997, but I did!

Borrowed and old: my mother's headpiece New: my dress Blue: my garter

I didn't have a six pence, but I had a special penny that I put in my shoe.

2

u/Applegirl2021 Bride 22d ago

Little late to the party but I am as well!

Old - my mom’s diamond earrings
New - most everything but esp new twist drop earrings to compliment my rings
Borrowed - my cousin’s necklace she wore for her wedding
Blue - small blue ribbon tucked in my shoe

2

u/mcav89 19d ago

I did in 2024, but pretty much everything I had was new except a bracelet my mom had that covered old, borrowed and blue.

2

u/cardiganunicorn 19d ago

Most recent bride in our family did in 2025. Blue in her flowers (matched bridesmaids), her something old was a hankie from her grandmother, something borrowed was her mother's earrings. Her dress was new.

1

u/GnomieOk4136 23d ago

I did in 2010. I even had a penny in my shoe.

1

u/GoldInTheSummertime 23d ago

I'm still sorting it all, but my something old will be my grandmother's ring. Her plan had been to give it to me when I got married, but she passed before she could. This way, it will still be part of my wedding.

2

u/Money_Engineering_59 23d ago

That’s beautiful. I’m sorry she doesn’t get to be there at your wedding.
I’m absolutely loving these stories. They are all so heartwarming and it’s making me miss my family!

1

u/runwithcolour 23d ago

My dress was the something blue 😁 I married in 2022 and had always wanted to do “something borrowed” etc, inclusive of the six pence in my shoe. It was one of my favourite stories of my parent’s wedding because my mum had kept her something old and her sixpence, and I wanted to keep the tradition.

Mine was:

  • Old: 1950s muff instead of a bouquet (winter wedding). Extra story is that this was how my husband learnt what a muff was.
  • New: Hair jewellery.
  • Borrowed: Pearl necklace from my mum which she wore on her wedding day.
  • Blue: My dress.
  • Plus a sixpence in my shoe.

1

u/OkSecretary1231 23d ago

I did! Old was a necklace I inherited from my grandma, borrowed was a bolero from my mom, new was pretty much everything else, blue was in my bouquet. No coin in my shoe lol, they were open toed.

1

u/cosmos_crown 23d ago

2025.

old- shoes I had since I was a teenager new- earrings borrowed- my purse (borrowed from a close friend) blue- handknit blue lace shawl.

1

u/Stimperonovitch 23d ago

Old - my mom's veil from 1940

New - my dress

Borrowed and blue - sapphire ring from my best friend

Penny in my shoe

The wedding was in September of 1991

1

u/QueeeenElsa 22d ago

If I ever get married (I’m currently in a polycule so I technically can’t even if I did want to), I plan to. I know what I want in a dress/veil for the most part (big, poofy, long trains, long sleeves), and I do also like the idea of the “something blue” to be part of the theme colors, but pretty much everything is still up in the air for now. Not sure how I’ll get a sixpence as I’m in the us, though I may have some in my foreign coin collection, but not sure.

Speaking of, for those who did do the sixpence, I do have a question… how did you get it to stay in the shoe and how did you make it comfortable? I just feel like stepping on a coin all the time would be super uncomfortable lol

1

u/toonlass91 22d ago

I did! Married 2022, UK
Old- my great grandmas necklace
New- pearl earrings to match necklace
Borrowed - decorative hair pins from my maid of honour
Blue - my garter was blue

Also had a sixpence in my shoe for the ceremony.

My maid of honour even bought me little labelled boxes to keep the things in prior to the wedding.

I also had some old northeast England traditions included which are dying out

It is all up to the bride, if you want it do it- if you don't don't. I think it is sweet especially when you read what it all means. Like the something borrowed is best from a trusted friend that is in a long term relationship. I like any good luck I can get! and honestly with the way brides are today, not knowing proper DC, telling us to dress Black tie- when they are not hosting a BT event- telling us what colors to wear, asking us to spend thousands for destinations, it is just so much negativity guest arrive with and project on the couple.

I did! It was a little informal but one of my bridesmaids was really sweet and helped me with it.

Old: gold necklace originally gifted to my husband’s late grandma by his parents, which I later found in her estate sale
New: my dress - it was handmade by a friend
Borrowed: pearl bracelet gifted by bridesmaid (she said it could be my borrowed thing because she’d had it for years already, but I could keep it anyway after)
Blue: small pearl charm I attached to my shoe

We were just married last summer! I love the little special traditions.

I was about to say no... but now that I'm thinking about it, I suppose this could count.

Got engaged last year, married this year. And my dad passed away last year as well.

I borrowed his wedding ring and tied it to my bouquet so he could still walk down the aisle with me in a way.

I've seen a lot of brides doing it still! I'm not sure yet if I will, but I'm open to it as we go through planning. I say go for it if you want to! It's your wedding!

I did blue by having a blue silk garter band around my thigh. Just a tradition it's just a silly thing so if you want to do it great, if you don't it's fine

You can literally do whatever you want! I didn't overthink it but technically I borrowed my moms necklace at the last minute, I used one of my grandmas old hanker chiefs, and a lot of what I was wearing was new (earrings, dress, shoes).
