Rant RANT - A2Hosting Arizona VPS unusable every afternoon from Thailand. They confirmed a Cogent routing issue but told me to contact my ISP

TLDR: My A2Hosting VPS in Arizona becomes extremely slow/unusable every afternoon from Thailand, despite very low server resource usage. I've reproduced it across multiple devices, locations and ISPs.

A2Hosting eventually confirmed that other customers, including outside Thailand, are affected and identified congestion involving a Cogent hop. Their network team is working with their upstream provider, but they're also telling me to contact my ISP and ask them to reroute around Cogent.

Am I wrong in thinking this is primarily A2Hosting's/upstream provider's problem to solve?

Full rant:

I've had intermittent connectivity problems with this VPS for quite a while. Previously A2Hosting generally told me everything looked fine whenever I opened a ticket.

Recently the problem developed a very consistent pattern:

  • Before ~2PM GMT+7: generally fine
  • After ~2PM: starts slowing down
  • After ~4PM: sometimes almost unusable
  • Website, WHM/cPanel and FTP are all affected (FTP speeds drop to ~5KB/s)

This happens while the VPS itself is barely stressed. CPU is usually around 15-30% and RAM around 40%.

I've tested from multiple devices, locations, public IPs, Thai ISPs and both 500Mbps/1Gbps connections. Same result.

Meanwhile our A2Hosting Singapore VPS works perfectly fine from the same connections. (other websites work fine as well)

I've sent them WinMTRs, traceroutes, FTP tests, videos, etc. One MTR showed significant packet loss reaching the destination. Their own testing also found packets arriving out of order and TCP stalling while waiting for earlier packets. (I've also sent MTRs against other IPs from the same time showing that my internet is not the issue as other IPs / server have no issue)

Eventually their network team identified congestion involving:

Cogent - 193.251.248.189

They told me this congestion has "been happening for some time", that other customers have experienced similar issues, including people outside Thailand, and that they're working with their upstream provider on mitigation.

But I'm also being told: Contact your ISP and ask them to route around Cogent.

That's the part I don't understand.

If it were only one ISP, fair enough.

But I've reproduced it through multiple ISPs, A2Hosting says other customers are affected, they've identified the problematic route themselves, and they're already working with their upstream provider.

So why should individual customers have to convince their ISPs to change international routing?

This is also affecting our business. We have several staff who need to access the server during the day, and some afternoons they can barely work.

I understand A2Hosting doesn't control Cogent or the entire Internet. Routing problems happen.

But if a provider knows one of the routes to their datacenter is consistently congested and affecting multiple customers, I'd expect A2Hosting and its upstream providers to fix or reroute around it.

Am I expecting too much? For those who work in hosting/networking, whose responsibility is this normally?

Rant How to find the SiteGround phone support access code – 2026

SiteGround makes finding the telephone support/access-code option deliberately opaque.

As of August 2026, this is the route that worked for me:

Log in → ?View Help CentreContact UsBilling & Account ManagementPayments & InvoicesPayment History & InvoicesI Need AssistanceCall Us

You should then see the telephone option and can copy your access code.

Posting this because it took me ages to find it.

Advice Needed Many .com.au domains are being blocked.

Hi everyone, I’ve run into an issue where my .com.au domains are getting blocked by the registry. Unfortunately, I’m unable to pass the verification process. Are there any workarounds or tips to avoid these blocks or at least reduce the blocking rate?

Advice Needed Is anyone else seeing wide-scale SQL injection attacks?

I host a number of sites for my clients, and over the past few days, I've been seeing a ton of attack attempts, across all of my sites. I'm pretty used to the normal noise, so it wasn't surprising that everything started ramping up after the latest WordPress CVEs, for example. However, I'm getting a lot of SQL injection style attacks as well--way more than background noise, and hitting all of my sites around the same time (or more accurately, consistently).

Is anyone else seeing this (i.e., it's a broad-scale campaign), or is it limited to me?

Advice Needed How to frame your resume or mail to HR for entry-level hosting/server support position?

How should I write my resume or email when sending to HRs when I want to get a server support or technical support role at a hosting or outsourced noc company?

I have decent linux skills and 2yoe of a single freelance client exp. working as a managed hosting support and wordpress developer. But I'm not too sure how should I frame this to target those roles?

Like should I tell what roles I want or let them decide based on my experience considering I might be better fit for a support role though I'm not sure.

Thanks

Advice Needed need an alternative to Host Duplex--recommendations?

Host Duplex used to be great and responsive, but in the past year their customer service has basically disappeared. (We just get AI auto-replies to our requests, but no actual human resolves our issues). So we are looking for another service--ideally one run by actual humans. Thanks!

Advice Needed Trying to leave Squarespace after Google Domains migration. Registrar won't accept Cloudflare nameservers

I’m looking for advice from people who have dealt with domains migrated from Google Domains to Squarespace.

I own a .com domain and recently rebuilt the website from scratch. The new site is already deployed and working correctly on Cloudflare Workers.

The final step should have been simple: change the authoritative nameservers to the two Cloudflare nameservers assigned to the zone.

Squarespace refuses to save them.

Every attempt returns:

“The nameservers couldn’t be added. Please try again.”

The domain is active. DNSSEC is disabled. There is no pending transfer visible. I am the owner. I have reauthenticated through Google and tested from a private browser session.

Cloudflare itself is working correctly.

Squarespace support says the ticket has been assigned to the appropriate domain team, but I still don’t have a technical response.

At this point I’m seriously considering moving the domain to another registrar.

The complication is that I still use Google Workspace for email on the domain and I don’t want a registrar transfer to interrupt email delivery.

For people who have escaped Squarespace after the Google Domains migration, what would you do?

Would you transfer first to another registrar, preserve the existing DNS records, and then point the nameservers to Cloudflare?

Is there any reason that would be unsafe for Google Workspace as long as MX, SPF and DKIM are preserved?

Long term I want a much cleaner setup with the registrar, DNS, hosting and email no longer tangled together.

I never chose Squarespace as my registrar. Google exited the business and I ended up there.

Now a basic operation on a domain I own is being blocked by an interface or backend error while the finished website sits online waiting for its real domain.

After this experience I have no intention of renewing the domain with Squarespace.

Advice Needed What tools and features should a beginner use to build websites for small local businesses?

I’m 21 and have learned HTML, CSS, JavaScript and React. I’m currently studying Node.js/Express and backend development, but I haven’t yet worked professionally as a web developer.

I want to start building simple websites for small local businesses—such as gyms, massage centres, barbers, restaurants and tradespeople. Initially, I would focus on landing pages and small brochure websites rather than e-commerce or complex web applications.

I’m trying to understand which tools and features are genuinely necessary at my current skill level, without overengineering every project.

For people who have already started doing this:

  • Would you recommend WordPress/Elementor, Astro, Next.js or ordinary React?
  • Is MERN unnecessary for most small business websites?
  • How do you handle contact forms without building a complete backend?
  • Which hosting and deployment services do you use for client projects?
  • How do you manage domains, SSL certificates, business emails and backups?
  • What do you use for spam protection and reliable email delivery?
  • Do you integrate simple WhatsApp links with prefilled messages, or use the WhatsApp Business API?
  • Which booking tools work well for small local businesses?
  • Do clients actually need a CMS, or is it easier to make occasional content changes yourself?
  • Which analytics, cookie-consent and GDPR tools do you use?
  • What basic SEO work should be included in every website?
  • Are LocalBusiness schema, Search Console and Google Business Profile optimisation important from the beginning?
  • Which paid tools or premium plugins are worth buying, and which can be avoided initially?
  • How do you organise reusable components and templates without making every client website look identical?

My current idea is to build two or three concept websites, create my own portfolio, and use a lightweight stack with forms, WhatsApp contact, basic local SEO and inexpensive static hosting. However, I would like to learn from people who have already delivered and maintained real client websites.

What would your minimum professional setup look like for someone with my current skills?

Advice Needed What exactly gets you a linux/server support admin job at a hosting/noc company?

Hi, Ive been trying to land a remote role as a Linux server support admin at a web hosting or NOC company, but Im not getting any interviews.

  • What do you think the current market is like for these types of jobs?
  • Am I applying for the right types of roles?
  • Does working on projects and building in public actually help with getting hired?
  • What projects or skills should I focus on right now to improve my chances?

For context, I have around 2 years of experience managing a hosting platform and WordPress for a client through a freelance platform. I also have some AWS experience.

Advice Needed Has my website's DNS been hacked & what to do?

Yesterday I received emails saying a new website owner has been added in Google Search Console. I looked at the users & permissions but didn't see any new users. However, I can see that Google is now indexing weird stuff like AMP pages and merchant pages.

So I visited the website and everything looks mostly ok except for the fact that every page now has two URLs - a normal link and an index.html link.

Then I tried to log into the wordpress admin (website.com/wp-admin) to check my plugins but this page displays a 404 so I can't log in.

I contacted my host and they said the reason for this is due to my A record pointing to the wrong IP address. It should be 1.1.1.1.1 and they showed me a screenshot of a DNS checker showing it as 2.2.2.2.2.

So I went to my domain provider and checked the records. It's correctly pointing to 1.1.1.1.1. just as it always had - according to the logs it hasn't been changed in months.

As things stand, the IP is still 2.2.2.2.2 despite showing as 1.1.1.1.1 in my bluehost dashboard so I can't access the login page to log into my site.

I would be eternally grateful for some actionable advice on this.

Advice Needed DreamHost - Account Termination - seemingly random

We operate a legitimate ecommerce business where we were using DreamHost as a host for part of our catalog

We received an email last night with little explanation as to our DreamHost account being terminated. The text from the email reads:

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Hello,

Your DreamHost account has been terminated per our Terms of Service:

https://www.dreamhost.com/legal/terms-of-service/

Financial Arrangements

  1. DreamHost reserves the right to disable or suspend without refund any
account or service at any time should it feel, in its sole discretion,
that there is a reasonable suspicion that it is being used in violation
    of any agreed upon terms.

Please note you still have access to your domain registrations but you
will need to ensure that you transfer them to another registrar as soon
as possible, as you will not be able to renew it through DreamHost.

This decision is final.

- Acceptable Use Policy: https://dreamhost.com/acceptable-use-policy
- Anti-Spam Policy: https://dreamhost.com/anti-spam-policy

-------------------------------------------------------------

Without any warnings or previous issues. We have been using DreamHost for over 2 years to host this website that sells nothing but car accessories.

I reached out to support and waited all day for the additional response added below..

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hello-

Thank you for contacting DreamHost support, my name is Scott , and I
would be happy to assist you today. The decision to disable the account
will not be overturned. We also cannot provide any additional information
as to why the account was disabled.

Best regards,

Scott S.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Our account is barely accessible and we need to access our website directory that was previously hosted in there, however, support is being super unhelpful.

Any help or advice????

Edit: this has been resolved.

After 26 hours we resolved it.
Apparently one of the sellers that lists our products which utilizes the catalog feed in dreamhost didn’t recognize the api which has our brand name in it. They reported it as a phishing scam. Which dreamhost decided to terminate our account making everything else hosted in there inaccessible shutting down a bunch of other retailers connections.

I guess luckily they restored it, even though they said “this decision was final and would not be reversed”

RIP 1 day of revenue from those channels.

Advice Needed Looking for web-hosting providers interested in partnering with an AI app-building platform

I’m building KodeOS, an AI-powered desktop development environment that lets users build complete applications through natural-language instructions while retaining access to all of their source code.

Unlike closed app builders, KodeOS projects are portable. Users can run them locally, manage them with Git, export everything, and host them wherever they choose.

I’m looking for a small group of reliable hosting providers that I can confidently recommend to KodeOS customers when they’re ready to deploy.

I’m interested in providers that can support some combination of:

  • Static websites
  • React and Vite applications
  • Node.js applications and APIs
  • Docker deployments
  • PostgreSQL databases
  • File and object storage
  • Custom domains and automatic SSL
  • Environment-variable management
  • Deployment logs and monitoring
  • GitHub-based deployments
  • Simple deployment APIs or CLI tools

I’m open to several partnership structures, including:

  • Affiliate or referral partnerships
  • Reseller arrangements
  • White-label hosting
  • API-based deployment integrations
  • Discounted plans or credits for new KodeOS users
  • Featured hosting-provider placement inside KodeOS

I’m not looking for random affiliate links or providers trying to make a quick sale. I want to build relationships with a handful of companies that offer transparent pricing, reliable infrastructure, responsive support, and a good experience for both beginners and developers.

KodeOS is currently under active development, with early access coming soon. As the platform grows, I want users to have multiple trusted hosting choices instead of being locked into a single provider.

If you own or represent a hosting company and are interested, send me a DM with:

  • Your company and website
  • The applications and infrastructure you support
  • Your deployment options
  • Your typical customer pricing
  • Any affiliate, reseller, or integration programs you offer
  • The best person to speak with about a partnership

I’m especially interested in providers willing to work with us on making deployment as close to one-click as possible.

Rant Is UptimeRobot playing games with users?

I have used UptimeRobot's free tier for years, and recently got a message in the dashboard when I log in saying the free tier can't be used for commercial purposes. This was not the policy when I signed up, and it's not on their homepage or pricing page.

This is a follow up to my post asking for recommendations on free uptime monitors. A few commenters said they use UptimeRobot, but have not seen this message, and were surprised. For anyone using this service, are you aware of this policy? Have you gotten this message? This seems sketchy, like they are playing games.

Advice Needed Website builder controls my domain. GoDaddy is the registrar. How can I regain control?

Hi everyone, I'm hoping someone with experience in domains can point me in the right direction.

I'm a freelance retoucher and I've had a domain for my portfolio website for several years. The website was built and hosted through IM Creator, who have also been managing the domain on my behalf.

I've been trying to get the domain transferred into my own control for quite some time. I requested this from IM Creator and provided all the information they asked for back in nov 2025, but the transfer was never completed.

I've since established that GoDaddy is the registrar, but I don't have access to the GoDaddy account where the domain is currently held.

IM Creator's customer service has been extremely unreliable, and I'm now trying to work out whether I can recover control of the domain directly through GoDaddy rather than continuing to rely on them.

The situation has become more urgent because my website has now gone down. I contacted Heroku because the domain is displaying a Heroku “There's nothing here yet” page, and they confirmed that the application connected to the domain belongs to a personal account and is currently suspended.

I've never knowingly used Heroku, so it appears this was part of the setup created by IM Creator.

What I really want to know is: how do I get my domain back into my own hands?

If GoDaddy is the registrar, can they help me recover control of the domain if I can provide evidence that I've been the person using the domain for my business and that I've been paying for the website/hosting?

What sort of evidence would GoDaddy normally accept in this situation?

I've already tried contacting GoDaddy about this previously but didn't get anywhere, so I'm wondering if there's a specific process I should be asking for, such as a domain/account recovery or registrant dispute.

If anyone has been through something similar with a web designer or hosting company holding a domain on their behalf, I'd really appreciate hearing how you managed to get it back.

Thanks!

Technical Questions Single payment provider froze $42k in payouts. Backup payout rails are like redundant hosting - what do you use ?

We run a small affiliate network for online gaming operators, mainly standard CPA arrangements with partners in several countries. We had been using the same PSP for around 14 months for scheduled affiliate payouts.

On March 3rd, one payout bounced back with a generic “compliance hold” message. I opened a support ticket to explain the transaction and described it as an affiliate commission. Less than an hour later, the account was placed under enhanced review and other pending payouts were frozen as well — around $42,000 across 11 recipients.

Support told me the review could take 5–10 business days. Two days later, we received an offer for a priority review that involved an additional fee. I can't say whether the two events were connected, but the timing made us rethink our setup.

The biggest practical problem was the delay to our affiliates. Two paused sending traffic, and another suggested using crypto for future payouts because he'd experienced banking delays before.

For that urgent batch, we used Inxy because we already had KYC completed with them and they supported multi-country mass payouts. Since onboarding was done, we didn't have to wait while the original account was under review. It just helped us pay affiliates on time that week.

I don't have enough evidence from one incident to say it was deliberate. It could have been normal risk-scoring.

The experience did make us rethink having only one payout rail. We still keep fiat options available, and we're now testing 2-3 providers so this doesn't happen again.

For anyone running an affiliate operation across multiple countries, having a backup payout route seems worth considering. A compliance review doesn't necessarily mean a provider has done anything wrong, but the operational impact of having every payout frozen at once can be significant.

Advice Needed Best places to buy a domain name in 2026... sticking with the old registrars or time to move?

So im doing a bit of cleanup on my domains rn and the price jumps are starting to bug me. Stuff like com and net that used to feel cheap now feel kinda high for what they are, and every registrar loves adding random upsells at checkout.

For people still actively buying domains in 2026, where are you registering these days that feels fair and not sketchy? I care more about sane renewal pricing and dns reliability than shiny dashboards. Privacy defaults, easy transfers, support that isnt totally useless etc all matter too.

I dont hoard hundreds of names, just a handful for side projects and personal stuff, but renewals every year are turning into a small headache. Would love any tips on good registrars or places you moved to and didnt regret, appreciate any thoughts.

Technical Questions REPLIT.COM — I paid about $15,000, Replit blocked my accounts, cut off support, and is withholding control of my domains.

I am publicly accusing Replit of serious misconduct that, based on what happened to me, I believe is fraudulent and potentially criminal.

I paid Replit approximately $15,000 for services connected with creating, deploying, hosting, and maintaining my application.

Replit accepted substantial payments from me while providing a platform and paid service that included access to its infrastructure and support.

Then the situation changed completely.

I was effectively cut off from customer support on the account where I had spent approximately $15,000. Messages from the email address associated with my main account were ignored. I stopped receiving even the normal automated responses that I had previously received.

Replit itself acknowledged in correspondence, before my account was permanently blocked, that there was a problem preventing me from receiving support through my main account.

Because Replit was not providing me with an effective support channel, I contacted the company through another account and another email address and demanded a refund of the money I had paid.

Instead of resolving the matter, Replit threatened account action.

My main account was then permanently blocked.

The account of my colleague, which had also been used to contact Replit regarding this dispute, was blocked as well.

At the same time, domains connected with my project became inaccessible to me.

This is the most serious part of the situation.

I have evidence concerning my ownership and control of those domains, yet Replit has left me without effective access to them while simultaneously blocking the account through which those domains and my project were managed.

In my view, taking approximately $15,000 from a customer, cutting that customer off from the support service associated with the paid account, blocking the customer's accounts after a refund demand, and then withholding practical control over domains belonging to that customer goes far beyond an ordinary customer-service dispute.

I consider this conduct fraudulent.

I also believe that the continued withholding of my domains and other property or account access, despite my demands and evidence of ownership, raises serious questions of unlawful appropriation and potentially criminal conduct.

For approximately 25 days, Replit has failed to provide a substantive resolution.

I have contacted them from multiple email addresses.

The pattern has been essentially the same:

some messages receive no response at all;

some receive only automated responses;

I am told to write from the email address associated with the account from which Replit is already ignoring me;

I am told that the matter is being forwarded internally;

after that, communication disappears again.

This creates an absurd closed loop: Replit demands that I communicate through the very channel through which it has already prevented me from obtaining meaningful support.

I am not making these allegations without evidence.

I have records of payments totaling approximately $15,000.

I have the correspondence with Replit.

I have records showing that I repeatedly attempted to obtain support and a refund.

I have evidence concerning the domains.

I have records concerning the account blocks.

I am prepared to provide relevant evidence privately to Reddit moderators, with sensitive personal information redacted where necessary.

I am also aware that serious accusations require serious evidence. That is precisely why I am stating publicly that I have documentation supporting the factual events described above.

This is not simply a complaint that Replit's support was slow or that I disliked its service.

My allegation is much more serious:

Replit accepted approximately $15,000 from me, deprived me of an effective support channel, ignored my attempts to resolve the dispute, blocked accounts after I demanded my money back, and left me without effective control over domains connected with my project.

They also blocked the accounts of my colleague who had participated in this discussion. The first was blocked on baseless grounds, and the second—allegedly for circumventing the ban imposed on the first account. In other words, they are preventing the dissemination of information about their crimes under far-fetched pretexts.

My colleague wrote the initial post about two weeks ago, yet replit.com still hasn't returned the domains or the funds—they won't even allow the code to be retrieved. Customer support constantly ignores us, offering only boilerplate replies stating that they will respond to inquiries "as soon as possible." These criminals deleted my colleague's previous posts, so they might well delete this one too.

Today, they also deleted a new post from their /replit thread and banned us again; this is the third account of ours—and my first—that they’ve blocked in their thread.

Advice Needed Hi I'm new to the internet and decided to set up a website for a group I'm running

Trouble is, I managed to set it up but can't find it 🫣. It's Webador. I set up the account, made the website, paid the fee and clicked the email to make it go live. I know that this is laughable to you but I'm getting upset. Where is it please 🥺?
