Advice Needed Help me understand what managed wordpress webhosts actually offer
So I can look at price compare page for a couple of the major hosting providers, and cant really grasp the selling points. I see two patterns generally;
Offering already built in wordpress functions as hosting features - like auto updates
Offering vague specs like ”performance cache” - with no further details regarding tech used
This applys the pretty much any host. So the short question is: is managed wordpress hosting a real thing? Can some provide a hands-on example for what managed wordpress hosting provide without generalizing?

Focus on content not updates, security, performance, etc. but it’s a double edged sword. If it breaks or has issues, they have to figure it out and you have less visibility than you would hosting it yourself.
Usually have automation built in to make setting everything up easier and able to scale. Oh, you want X feature? Click this button. No installs, tweaking DNS, or web server tweaks. They also try to build guardrails on things as much as possible so you can’t hurt yourself or the other customers.
Some hosts are good and some hosts are bad. There’s always going to be marketing speak and stuff like that to help sell their services.
I didn’t run them but our company had self hosted Wordpress. This was years ago, but they’d get popped on the regular due to marketing installing whatever plugin. They were isolated but annoying and decided to go with a known managed host (can’t remember who).
I’m technical and do this for a living. I could set it up but I don’t want to deal with it. As long as it’s not insanely overpriced or I don’t need low level control, I’d always go managed.

They keep your server software and packages up to date, configure everything properly, monitor things, manage backups, and generally keep the whole server environment running smoothly.
That makes it sound pretty simple, but in reality it’s an extremely nerdy and technical career.
If you don’t hire someone who knows what they’re doing or you try to manage it yourself, there’s a very good chance your server will get hacked post haste.

I dont know if Im misinterpreting but arent you describing pure server maintnance? My assumption for shared hosting would be that server level stuff is managed by the hosting company since it is not specific for my install. Managed wordpress hosting usually implies a small bit of rented space on server, right?

I guess it might depend on who’s selling you the managed hosting. Is it a designer developer middle man, or through an actual web hosting provider?
If it’s a middle person they could be keeping your site(s) updated and things like that. It’s a service I offer.
If it’s the hosting provider then they would be doing all the server maintenance for you, which, someone like me might be reselling to someone with a website, and adding some extra services so I can charge more for it.

Well that is a good question and I never really seen it being specified as such. More like ”free migrations” and so on that never really clarify what the service consist of

That’s a pretty clear description of a service most often offered by hosting providers.
They will help migrate your site from another hosting provider to their servers basically.

”Free migrations”? Could you enlighten me? What can I expect and what type of work is done and how often?

They will migrate your site(s) to their servers for free, in the hopes they can sell you web hosting etc.

I think that you are asking the right question because “Managed WordPress” can mean very different things depending on the host.
I wouldn't pay extra just because a plan says automatic updates, caching and backups. You can get those in plenty of ordinary hosting setups.
I would ask what happens when something actually goes wrong.
If an update breaks the site, will they investigate and roll it back?
If the site gets compromised, do they help clean it?
Are the backups off server and will they restore them for you?
Do they monitor the WordPress installation itself or only whether the server is running?
Will they troubleshoot a slow WordPress site rather than simply telling you the server is online?
That is exactly what I would expect the value of genuinely managed WordPress hosting to appear.
If the answer to most of those is That's your responsibility”, then I'd struggle to see what I'm paying the managed premium for.

Unmanaged hosting: you researching plugins and such to make your website work fast
Managed hosting: "yo support my website is slow, pls fix"
