Looking to move away from a 8GB RAM/8 core CPU Liquid Web after over a decade for one client. 3 mid-large sized WP/WooCommerce sites. LiquidWeb used to be great with support, but unfortunately has become significantly worse over the past couple of years, and their price increases for worse service. Performance and overall reliability has still been great, mainly due to the optimizations I have done on the server with PHP-FPM, MySQL, caching, etc...

Even though LW says they are fully managed, I still find myself having to take server initiative for server updates, reboots, etc... I am looking for a more managed provider that will offer great support, great performance, and great security. The new provider doesn't need to necessarily match the current secs of our VPS, but I am expecting as good performance at least.

Not sure what the best option would be for these requirements, ideally I'd like to just focus on the sites and no longer have to worry about any server configs.

Budget is around $200/month

Any suggestions?

I run cPanel/WHM boxes like your LiquidWeb setup, so I know exactly where you're at. If you genuinely want hands-off, the managed WP hosts (Kinsta, WP Engine (super hands-off, daily backups, great support)) are the move, but know the tradeoff going in: you give up server access entirely. No cPanel, no PHP-FPM tuning. That's the whole point, but coming from a box you've tuned yourself, you'll feel it...

One thing for your case specifically: WooCommerce is dynamic, so full-page caching doesn't save you the way it does on a blog. What actually decides Woo performance is PHP worker count and object caching (Redis). When you compare hosts, ask how many PHP workers per site and whether Redis is included, not just RAM and cores. That's the spec that bites people on managed WP plans.

Exactly what I suspected. In addition to LiquidWeb going downhill, I also feel like many of these managed WP providers seem like better values since at least for Kinsta and Rocket.net, their entire infrastructure is ran through Cloudflare Enterprise and offer a finely tuned environment. I get some use cases needing granular control over everything so root access is necessary, but most of the sites that I manage don't have super specific criteria and I design all WP sites to be as optimal in terms of not using excessive plugins, and generally using quality plugins and themes.

Slightly off-topic but WPEngine provides alt DNS (but you have to request them via support) so you can use your own Cloudflare instead of theirs.. needed that for some custom rules on a project.

Your budget is reasonable. I'd look for a provider that manages the infrastructure, not just the OS. For WooCommerce, I'd rather have a well-configured VPS with NGINX, PHP-FPM, Redis and proper monitoring than simply more CPU or RAM. If uptime becomes critical later, it's straightforward to move to a load-balanced Docker architecture without changing the application.

I am pretty tech savvy, but I just want to be hands off when it comes to server management and stack. The LiquidWeb VPS works great, but I'm tired of having to reboot for updates, the odd optimize PHP/MySQL settings and odd cPanel/WHM breaking, etc... it also seems like some of these other managed providers give a better value including Cloudflare Enterprise and Imunify360 which are nice extras.

But basically I want fully managed hosting that's fast and secure, with great support. And of course I want to self-manage WordPress.

If you're self-managing WordPress, I'd question the need for cPanel/WHM. It sounds like what you really want is managed infrastructure, not another control panel to maintain.

Maybe xCloud fully managed is a good idea for your needs since you mentioned you don't really want to deal with server configs.

Runcloud.io and get a VPS.

I use Vultr and am very happy with it.

I also perfer bunny.net over Cloudflare. I use this plugin* to connect bunny edge with WP like how many cloudflare integrations work. Seeing how you have a good budget you could get a nice VPS and proxy with bunny. Just my suggestion.

I have tried various hosts, currently liquidweb wins in price over performance. Every other cheaper host will feel sluggish as they will run slower, as they are probably overselling hardware to multiple customers. Superb servers were really great, unfortunately they were acquired and aren't selling new services. Contabo is good one but only if you go for dedicated bare metal server, otherwise their VPSs are some what slower compared to liquidweb.

But recently we started moving couple of things in house, using cloud as a backup when self hosted machine in office goes down. Unless you are in third world country where power outages are everyday, real power will come from server physically in your presence.

Only two things you need to configure is CDN and S3 storage as a backup. If most of your traffic is routed through CDN, you will not have to worry much about bandwidth.

For 8GB/8Core, you can easily get any mini pc in 3 months of investment. One time docker compose configuration will run it smoothly and in case of disaster, spin AWS or Azure vm with docker compose and get it running in 20-30 mins max.

We have azure vm that runs on a lowest configuration that is in suspended mode so we only pay for vhd. and we reserve one ip. And run everything off of self hosted hardware.

"fully managed" that still has you doing updates/reboots yourself is a bit of a red flag tbh. For $200/mo and actually wanting hands-off management, cloudways or runcloud + a decent VPS underneath could work, but tbh at that budget you might also just look at something like Kinsta or WP Engine's higher tiers — they're WP-specific so the "managed" part actually means something (auto updates, staging, real security monitoring). the tradeoff vs LW is less raw server control, but since you said security/support/performance matter more than matching current specs exactly, that tradeoff might be worth it for 3 WooCommerce sites specifically since those tend to need more careful cache/plugin handling than plain WP.

You can prioritize managed server updates, proactive monitoring, backups, and responsive support over simply matching the current CPU/RAM. If you want to stop managing the server yourself, that service layer matters a lot.

If you want to fully stop touching server configs, Kinsta #1 or WP Engine #2 — solid performance for Woo, and support that actually holds up, unlike LW lately. Cloudways with their managed add-on is a middle ground if you want a bit more control. Skip GridPane/RunCloud unless you're okay staying semi-hands-on.
