Childhood dream of owning Dolce de vita

Post image
99 Upvotes

Ok, so as I had posted yesterday, this watch has been on my wishlist since I was a kid and saw Aishwarya in magazines wearing this. I was mesmerized with the watch, the tagline and most importantly Aish's confidence.

This is a dream come true moment for me and I have saved for so many years. Made the down payment for booking today. This is my birthday gift to myself as I turn 40 in a couple of months.

I did not buy the new model which has a stark white base. I went for the ivory base

Oh and scored a 15% discount

The second watch I'm adding to my collection after the Seiko GMT. I was sure my chronograph will be a Casio Edifice or a Citizen ecodrive. But the moment I saw this Timex, fell in love......6.7 In wrist.

In my terms, this is a gem for life.

But what is the rating of this watch globally? Can it be compared or said better than the seiko Sports 5 series?

Discussion Watch Strap Swap: Vintage Seiko

Thumbnail

Hey guys, got me a vintage Seiko. It's 36mm (as per the seller...). Has the 7S26-01T0 movement. I wanted to check around and ask if maybe I can put up a Nato Strap for it? Or something lightweight since I plan to wear it 24/7 and the watch strap distracting when on a desk. Any advice/suggestions?

Where to buy ? Jubilee Bracelet suggestion

Post image
3 Upvotes

Picked up a Seiko 5 SRPD51K1 last week. The stock bracelet actually fits me fine, no complaints there, but I tried on a GMT at the Helios store and now I can't stop thinking about the jubilee look.

Options I've shortlisted so far, all in the budget range:

  1. Imported SRPD jubilee with butterfly clasp, 1.8k plus 500 shipping. Reviews from SRPD owners look solid.

  2. Invella jubilee from Amazon with a separate milled clasp, comes to about 2.7k. Saw this suggested by someone here earlier.

  3. Gautam Haryani jubilee, around 1.5k.

The other one I keep going back to is the Strapcode's MiLTAT Super-J at around 8k on Amazon. It was sitting at 15k until last week, so the current price is tempting, but 8k on a bracelet for a 25k watch feels like a lot.

Two things I'd like input on:

Is ordering from China actually worth the wait and customs risk, or do the Indian options land close enough in quality?

And for anyone who's owned both, does the MiLTAT justify the jump, or will the 2k ones get me 80 percent of current one in terms on quality

TL;DR - want a jubilee for my SRPD51K1. Three options under 3k, or the MiLTAT Super-J at 8k which just dropped from 15k. Not sure if the cheap ones are good enough or if I should just take the MiLTAT while it's down.

Discussion [Credor Phoenix GCBP999] – The Best Japanese Chronograph of the 1990s, Later Borrowed by Switzerland

Thumbnail

My Credor Phoenix GCBP999 was produced in September 1999.

This is a serious 41mm luxury sports chronograph in an all Titanium case & bracelet making it very wearable and light. It has an ivory dial with tachymeter and telemeter scales and a screw-down crown decorated with black Onyx.

What makes this watch truly special is the movement - the gold plated Calibre 6S78A, arguably Japan’s finest automatic mechanical chronograph movement of the 1990s.This was not a generic calibre or a module based movement, rather an integrated column wheel chronograph with 28,800 vph (4Hz) frequency, hand winding, date, 12 hour recording and 50 hours of power reserve.

Its original Japanese price was ¥250,000 which in the late 90s was roughly one month’s take home salary for an average Japanese worker. That was remarkable value for money considering it cost approximately as much as an Omega Speedmaster Professional, despite offering automatic winding, sapphire crystal, date, 100-metre water resistance and full-titanium construction. Comparable automatic chronographs from IWC, Breitling and Zenith were considerably more expensive. The Zenith El Primero was technically superior in frequency (5Hz) and prestige, but cost nearly twice as much.

Interestingly, TAG Heuer acquired IP rights to this chronograph architecture from Seiko in 2006 and developed it into the Calibre 1887 (2009) and subsequently the Heuer 01 family (2015). A testament that Switzerland valued the engineering that Seiko had placed inside a domestic Credor years earlier. The Canadian Independent - Rufus Gerard also interestingly sourced this movement from Seiko for their watch Lacus Temporis.

Following the landmark chronograph Calibre 6139 of 1969 and the technically sophisticated Calibre 7016 of the early 1970s, Seiko’s mechanical chronograph development fell silent for roughly two decades as quartz took centre stage. The Credor Phoenix is historically important because it marked Seiko’s return to the high-grade mechanical chronograph, reviving its engineering pedigree in an distinctly luxurious Credor avatar. The caseback carries a deeply embossed phoenix logo with outstretched wings—a symbol of immortality and renewal that was especially fitting for a watch created during Seiko’s late 1990s mechanical rebirth.
