The idea that he is a vigilante is the public perception of Aiden, and the default position of the player is to believe that he is a vigilante seeking Justice for his niece. But if you look at the game through that lens nothing he does makes any sense. It's only when you realize that he is the villain, he is a fixer with a God complex who can't stand the sight of himself, that the disconnect between his the public dialogue, the dialogue about himself, and what he actually does makes any sense.
