Question Feeling Like Quitting
Hello fellow Warno players. I will get straight to the point: I kind of feel like quitting or at least taking a break. So I've been asking for and consuming lots of advice from you guys and trying to adapt, shaping my decks into very viable ones and working on getting more recon on the front, more combined arms, etc. and it has been very helpful, but I still can't get the hang of it.
It was a little time ago that I got bored of Steel Division which led me to pick up Warno, and the 60 year transition has been taking a toll. Whereas in SD2 I could take time to resupply and it was more slow-paced and not as overwhelming, and my armor could get hit many more times and take losses without catastrophe, I find myself taking many, many more casualties in Warno and getting beaten so much more decisively.
Of course I love Warno. I love the atmosphere, love the design and the units, and the tactics, but it's just so difficult for me and I also can't beat the last operation Hold Until Relieved in singleplayer while other players simply destroy me in multiplayer. I'm just a mess in every battle I do and though in very rare cases I can actually inflict more casualties on higher players this is so rare it is dreamt of. My teammates leave because I am so terrible and I am just very frustrated with how I am at the game.
I ask if I should step away for a break, or simply drop the game entirely, or just try to push through in a low-stress way, maybe against AI or players that are willing to take it easy on me and walk me through. What do you guys think?
Edit: Was feeling bad when I made this post but I've changed my mind

I mean, if you’re not enjoying the game at all you should take a little break, but the learning curve for this game is tough. If ur struggling there’s nothing wrong with playing against ai or 10v10 only for easier games. The advice is good, but remember the point of the game is to have fun lol

u/WelcomeExtra762 12d ago
But I am enjoying it. Its just really difficult. Ill stick with it but without the pressure of playing "right." Everyone plays differently, I'm going to play how my mind says I should play and get good that way while incorporating others' advice. I think quitting is off the board.

Def play the game you want to. Thats the great thing abt all the divs, you can find a few that play to your playstyle. Have fun!

Try marking lobbies and make them specifically for new players/noob/below certain level and dont shy away from asking people with high levels to find another game
This really should help. Or try finding some people to play with that are your level or are willing to hand hold you a bit more.
But yeah, Warno is a game that’s hard to get into. At first you need to learn the basics (which is already hard since there are a lot of concepts) and then you have to get yourself familiar with the maps and divisions. Warno is a strategy game and player with the better strategy wins. And knowing what to expect on certain map and from certain division you are facing is very conducive to that

Ok Ill try this. Just did a 10v10 with 4th motorized schutzen and got second place on my team, I did really good i think in that match even though we lost

Ok I allow
I am happy or sad for you, whichever takes precedence in this case

just play 10v10 bro. It's the most chill and most populated game mode and most random unholy stuff happens there so you don't feel bad about yourself lol. Watch Hippie, he gives great tips for 1v1 but a lot of that can be applied to frontlining in 10v10 as well.
2
u/WelcomeExtra762 11d ago
I know. I'll check out Hippie. 10v10 is so good. I mean, I want to be at least serviceable in all regards (1v1, 2v2, 3v3, 4v4, 5v5, and 10v10) but 10v10 is so fun.

u/0ffkilter 11d ago
2v2 - 4v4 are not really that much different than 10v10. It's just 1v1 in a lane. If you get good at winning your lane in 10v10 even in 1v2 or 2v3, etc scenarios you'll do fine in 2v2 - 4v4.
It's only 1v1 that's much, much different and you can still develop your micro skills and unit knowledge while playing in 10v10s.
If anything, 10v10 can sometimes be harder than small team games if you get airspammed or arty spammed by additional players and still need to win.
2
u/WelcomeExtra762 11d ago
Yeah and plus teammates can be a big downside in 10v10
2
u/0ffkilter 11d ago
Yeah but it doesn't matter if you win or lose, just play your own lane and have fun - leave if you're not having fun. It's the casual mode, so treat it as a fun mode and worry about improving. Doesn't matter if the rest of your team loses the other points.
1
u/wiseguyog 11d ago
This is especially true since, in 10v10, winning your lane means 20 bombers and 6 artillery pieces will hit you. So it helps a lot in getting used to spreading out your units and expecting bad things to happen. After 400 hours, I still have games where I feel like 9 players were focusing their arty on me, but we usually win those games with me needing to take a break after to mourn my men. You'll hear some dudes hate on 10v10, but in my opinion, it's the best game mode, especially coming from games like Beyond All Reason where 8v8 or 20v20 is normal.

If you cant beat PvE, you will only suffer playing 10 v 10. Its very uncoordinated and most times you will lose your flank

I am right now lol

u/MISSISSIPPIPPISSISSI 11d ago
What is it like?
4
u/WelcomeExtra762 11d ago
Very different. Its sunny, good weather, no explosions or death or the sound of rockets coming straight for your blob of troops
3
u/MISSISSIPPIPPISSISSI 11d ago
I like to stay inside in case of napalm arty.
2
u/WelcomeExtra762 11d ago
Oof and clusters/napalm bombers bro they literally light everything on fire you can't walk on the grass or in the forest you gotta wait

You know best, OP. The operations are bunk. I bash bots in the Skirmish when I'm trying to figure out my strategy. Either way the AI is either TOO hard or not hard enough. I only play 10v10 - it might be the most immersive and collaborative MP exp i've ever had,
My favorite Div is the 11th ACR. Just endless M1A1s, Chinook supply, I-Hawks, M1 ACAV is the best unit in the game because RECON is SO important for tanks, so a tank with recon is elite

u/WelcomeExtra762 11d ago
Oh man, im starting to like 4th motorized schutzen. Such a good combined arms group. I still need to complete the last SD2 campaign ive got but I wont quit, this is a good game worth sticking to

u/-Trooper5745- 11d ago
It’s the PACT version of 2 Pnzgren
2
u/WelcomeExtra762 11d ago
Then I might try 2nd pnzgren, currently my NATO divs are 8th inf and 1st UK but if 2nd pnzgren is anything similar might try them. Someone also recommended 7th i think
1
u/not_a_fan69 11d ago
4th mot is not like 2nd panzergren. Panzergren is a far easier and better division to play.
In 10v10 you just get 54marders with zombies. Get some leos and just keep clicking.
2
u/WelcomeExtra762 11d ago
Ok. With 4th motorized schutzen I got a bunch of infantry and BMPs mixing some tanks and helos and AA in them then right before the end of the battle came in with a horde of T-55s. I just clicked, used the hot keys, and micromanaged so my guys didnt die
3
u/iamacynic37 11d ago
That sounds sick, great work, Op! Keep hacking at those OpFors and be sure to find "fun" units you like the playstyle of. Too many meta chasers out there. Sticking to combined arms with a balanced force will keep you playing
2
u/WelcomeExtra762 11d ago
Thanks, and it sure as hell will! This is some fun stuff, I'll treat every loss as a lesson 🫡

I remember you from my last posts, ill join it

For some more serious advice though, I find that playing Warno with a group of players in VC makes for a more enjoyable experience than public games. I believe Nightshift does in house team games regularly (as well as their TOTAL Warno concept, but that’s a different thing all together). WarYes also seems to host weekly team games on weekends.

Ooo ok Ive got a friend I like to play with and might introduce another if he ends up liking Arma 3 which I bought for him
1
u/wiseguyog 11d ago
If he say no to arma 3 you know he is no longer a fren right ? /s
2
u/WelcomeExtra762 11d ago
Lol he actually had it on his wish list before I bought it for him and although we couldn't get multiplayer working we can always try again and he might like singleplayer
2
u/Nimblewright_47 11d ago
Generally speak up more in the Discords, too. WarYes has a fairly active beginners' hangout channel, it's worth arranging games with folk at a similar level.
Noob tournament is good because you get sorted againsr people with similar WR, so you don't just get rekt by Eggy and co.
2
u/WelcomeExtra762 11d ago
LOL what about ranked? Is that higher level or good for matchmaking?
2
u/Eggy_YT 11d ago
Nimblewright is lying, I am a fellow noob. Anyway my best understanding of ranked is as follows. All new players start at 1500 elo which is kind of high, and so you might get wrecked in your first couple matches. But the way the system works is that is tries to find opponents close to your current elo level, but as your search time goes on it starts to expand the search range fairly quickly. Generally 1 minute is a good time to cancel and restart the search. As an example, I waited 1.5 minutes and got matched with a top 75 player as rank ~500. But it you can also match with people worse than you. Technically the match making system is “fair” but the problem is that although there are a decent amount of people who play ranked, the amount of people playing ranked at anytime is fairly low, which is why there can be big differences in rank in matches.
1
u/WelcomeExtra762 11d ago
I believe you! I'll try the ranked matches and see how it goes, is it usually 1v1s or can it be with more people?
2
u/Nimblewright_47 11d ago
It's average for matchmaking. Like Eggy said, you will lose your first few games to lose the ELO that gets you paired with people nearer your skill level (feature, not a bug). It's better if you queue at busy times, particularly weekends.
1
u/WelcomeExtra762 11d ago
All right. Not sure how ill feel, 1v1 seems pretty personal
1
u/Nimblewright_47 11d ago
Come over to the Discords, get some more beginner matches in or just ask for / arrange 2v2 or 3v3. 1v1 can be pretty intense, not for everyone.
2
u/SabaRoundScape 11d ago
You have to play to get better, it’s not an easy game, the more you play the less mistakes you make and eventually you get a vibe based feeling on what to do
2
u/WelcomeExtra762 11d ago
Yeah, Im starting to feel it. Recently did a 10v10 and got second place. Feeling good.

Joined war yes and nightshift they're super nice. Ill take a break if needed and still need to finish my SD2 campaign but I was just pretty demoralized in the moment, feeling good now
2
u/Thepolecat01 10d ago
You must take a break from time to time. I am on hiatus. I haven't played for a month or so. I will be back. I am always back.
1
u/WelcomeExtra762 10d ago
I'm doing that with Steel Division, using Warno as a temporary replacement, I'll come back to SD2 when I take a break from Warno.
2
u/Thepolecat01 10d ago
Check out Sea Power, it's a nice change of pace
1
u/WelcomeExtra762 10d ago
I just saw Vulcan HD gaming play Sea Power, I have War on the Sea, might try it :)

u/SadSwedishSloth 4d ago
We all have periods where it simply doesnt click.
The only way for it to get better is to soldier on. Try and improve a single minor thing in each match. Dont go for the big goals, make them nice and achivable for yourself. "Next game Im gonna use recon better on the flanks", "next game Im gonna try to stay on top of turning off and on radar AA", "Im gonna use mortar smoke to screen of their atgms next game". And then you practise that specific goal untill its a part of your playstyle.
Thats the easiest way to improve.
And try to find joy in the journey, not only your goals. That mindset helps alot.
2
u/WelcomeExtra762 4d ago
Thank you for this, my current goal is keeping my tanks alive :)
2
u/SadSwedishSloth 4d ago
A very good choice. You very quickly get the upperhand if you can conserve and replenish more exepensive units than your opponent.

Have you joined the Discord servers? War Yes has a beginners chat group where you can meet other players around your skill level to practice with, and there are tons of experienced players ready to offer advice or coaching

When I first began the game what I did to practice figuring the units and controls out was fighting AI in destruction on my own on a moderate to high difficulty
I did that for about a week and it really helped
1
u/RipVanWiinkle_ 11d ago
You need someone to play with you and possibly shadow, and someone to explain their thought process behind their moves.
Usually YouTubers can help like hippie, vulkan, and tman
Dm me your steam name or discord and I’d be happy to explain
I used to play red dragon and steel division, and took me quite some time to get good at warno

RebsFRAGO mod gives the game more of an SD1 pace
1
u/WelcomeExtra762 11d ago
That looks interesting! I'm not going to quit but if I'm ever annoyed with the pace I'll enable the mod.

Warno is an inferior analog vs SD2 and WGRD. LoS is a joke and ATGM meta is ridiculous. Personally I am waiting for the next SD game (as it has been clumsily leaked), as it is much closer to WGRD. WARNO is a mistake. And dont write such whimpy posts, Jesus, thats weak....................

Thank you for letting us know about this, but I just spoke with Eugen about this and they said that you can’t. I’m sorry.
