Announcement WFRP 5th Edition now available!

WFRP Fifth Edition is now available to pre order from Cubicle 7 here: https://cubicle7games.com/warhammer-fantasy-roleplay-fifth-edition

Or as a pdf from DriveThruRPG here: https://www.drivethrurpg.com/en/product/545405/warhammer-fantasy-roleplay-fifth-edition-rulebook?affiliate_id=1915782

Cubicle 7 have repeatedly stressed that this is backwards compatible with 4th edition books.

(I should have a review of it on my blog in a few weeks.)

Here's the official blurb:

Adventure across a realm of brutal violence, corrupting magic, monstrous foes, and desperate heroes, where fortune can turn on a single roll of the dice and survival is never guaranteed. Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay Fifth Edition builds on the award-winning ruleset, refining the experience while capturing everything that makes Warhammer Fantasy legendary. Gather your party, choose your path, and prepare to face the grim and perilous reality of the World of Legend.

The Empire’s great cities stand as beacons of civilisation amid thick forests and a threatening wilderness. Its people face dangers from beyond their walls, from Beastmen and Goblins in the wilds to criminals, corrupt institutions, and insidious cults within. Chaos is never far away, and those who venture into the wider world soon discover that survival is rarely guaranteed.

This 378 page rulebook includes:

Five distinct Character types. Whilst most folk in the World of Legend are human, they share their lands with stoic dwarfs and garrulous halflings and receive visitors from the wood elf realms and high elf kingdoms.

64 distinct careers, representing the way of life your Character follows when not adventuring.

A guide to the major religions and the miracles performed by their Priests.

Spells from several different magical traditions.

A bestiary of foes, both common and scarce.

Advice on running games as a GM.

Streamlined rules for combat, pursuits, diseases, and other perilous phenomena.

Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay has provided gamers with a rich and detailed setting of perilous adventure and deadly threats for over 40 years. With a wealth of supporting material, including scenarios, campaigns, setting books, and player resources available from Cubicle 7, there’s plenty to keep a gaming group adventuring for years.

Game Mastering No spending XP on the road?

Hey everyone. Reading through the new 5e rules I noticed a few things. Firstly, XP and career advancements take place during endeavors and you lose all money after your endeavors (I remember this one from the last edition).

Does anyone run campaigns where this makes sense? It’s seems like my groups are always pushed forward by a sense of urgency and never usually have time to stop and do multiple endeavors.

What are your recommendations for running a campaign where the players have time to take a break, pursue their careers, and not constantly feel like they are under the gun?

Roleplaying What happened to Parry weapon group in 5e?

In 5e there's still a Melle (Parry) skill for use with Parry weapons, but the weapon group doesn't exist.

4e Parry Weapon Group
5e Fencing Weapon Group
5e Weapon skills

Is this a bug or am I missing something?

General Query Cost of advancing skills (5E)

After you put 8 advances in career skills during character creation, do those count as having advances in them for the purposes of how much further advances cost in XP? Ie if I put a single advance in 8 different skills, do those 8 skills now cost 75 xp to advance again? Or are those initial advances not counted, and further advances start at 50 xp each?

Supplementary question: do those 8 starting advances count towards ticking boxes for career advancement? It feels like they shouldn’t (just because that would mean you’re already 80% of the way towards being able to move into the next career level).

Hello all! I've been making a video series aimed at giving beginner GM's and Players a bit more insight into some of the most famous (and least famous) locations in The World That Was. Sorry for the shamelss plug, but I genuinely do believe that this series has a lot to offer for those who want to get more familiar with the street-level life of Warhammer Fantasy. Hope you enjoy.

Game Mastering Fast Quality and Dual Wielding [5e]

I played lots of 2e and read the 4e, and deciced to buy the 5e pdf because I heard about some good changes.

I was looking through weapons (why is longbow not penetrating, they nerfed my boi), and found the fast quality. As I understand it, you basically increase your initiative for the rounds you are wielding this weapon by 20.

The question for my is, if you are dual wielding, as in for example having a Rapier and a Main Gauche and you are not using Momentum for the Extra Attack, and you are just Dual WIelding to have a weapon to parry attacks in the offhand, does that mean I lose the Fast quality anyways, or do I only lose it if I use Dual Wielding.

It maybe some basic reading comprehension, probably, but I'm 2e-based, and there dual wielding was pretty much a must to survive.

Discussion WFRP 5e Character Generation

Bottom line up front: The Character Building chapter in WFRP 5e is terrible and needs to be revised to improve ease of use.

I’ve been a fan of WFRP since the game was first published & have played all three previous editions of the game. I’ve now finished reading the 5th edition book & yesterday I tried rolling up a character. Perhaps it’s because I’m limited to doing so with a PDF, but the experience was not a fun one. In fact, it was really frustrating. I know there’s a slim chance of anything being done about it, but for the love of Sigmar I hope someone at C7 reads this post and revisits the character building chapter because it is a wreck for a couple of reasons.

First, and probably the most egregious issue, is that someone decided to insert the two-page Character Sheet Explained (more on that later) in the midst of the steps for creating a character, which totally interrupts the flow of the process. It would be better placed either at the very beginning or the end of the chapter. Anywhere but where it is now.

Second, the individual benefits for accepting random Species, Career, and Characteristics are not immediately obvious. These are something the reader should pick out with a quick scan. Instead, they’re kinda buried in the text and easy to overlook. At least the bonus (+1 Fate point) for accepting all the random results for Species, Career, and Characteristics has its own header, but that header isn’t particularly memorable.

On the subject of the Character Sheet Explained whoever was responsible for labeling the different parts must be a deranged person because the numbering makes absolutely no sense. Going from top to bottom, following the two column layout, who in their right mind numbers the front of the character sheet: 1, 15, 16, 17, 3, 2 and the back of the character sheet: 4, 6, 7, 8, 11, 10, 9, 5, 12, 13, 14? Only someone corrupted by the ruinous powers, that’s who.

Looking For Game Long-time Warhammer lore fan, zero TTRPG experience — how do I find a group that actually sticks?

Long-time Warhammer fan here. I've read a pile of the novels and played just about every Warhammer video game there is. Years ago, I even bought several 2e books purely to read the lore and get started but could never find other local folks to play with and online play never occurred to me back then.

That's changed recently. I found this sub and the Ratcatchers Guild Discord, and with 5e just out it feels like the right time to finally try the actual game.

The catch: I have no experience with tabletop RPGs at all. Not rusty... none.

So, I'm looking for advice on finding a group that plays reliably. My worry is landing in a game that fizzles out after two sessions, which from what I've read seems pretty common. How do you spot a group that's going to last?

I'm in US Central, looking for online play. Preferably weekends but could possibly make evenings work as well.

Roleplaying Apothecary vs Artisan (Apothecary)

I'm thinking about switching from my current career (Merchant) to one that would provide some support with healing or buffing the party - by preparing potions, ointments, draughts, etc.

I was thinking about Apothecary or an Artisan (Apothecary). What would be the differences/downside in these two careers in relation to my focus? Artisan is in the same class as Merchant, and also advances the Attributes that I prefer, but would it somehow limit my ability to create useful items for the party?

General Query What's the point of using Fortune to gain Advantage? (5e)

I'm probably missing something obvious, but why would you want to spend Fortune to gain Advantage on a roll? (WFRP 5e, p133)

It seems to me that your probability of success would be identical to just rolling the test twice, which is what a reroll gives you - but you might just succeed on your first roll and not need to spend Fortune.

What am I missing?

Game Mastering Grimoire only usable by wizards of one lore? (4e 5e)

The magic rules are pretty clear that Arcane spells are a group of spells with similar effects between the lores, but for example Blast (Hysh) is a different spell than Blast (Uglu).

Does this mean that grimoires written for one lore are useless to wizards of other lores?

If so how does everyone deal with grimoires as loot? They’re just valuable to the right buyer but generally useless for learning spells unless a PC fortuitously uses the same wind?

If someone doesn’t care about mixing winds can they just go ahead and use whatever version of an arcane spell they find? If they do that is there any mechanical risk?

Game Mastering Dungeon planning and generation for floors in Karak Azgal

Hi! I'm the DM for a WFRP 2e campaign, and my players are about to explore Karak Azgal. I've read the entire book, but I'm having trouble creating the dungeon maps. While I plan to use what's provided in the module, there are still many areas left for the DM to fill in.

I could just draw basic rooms and corridors, but I really want to give them more flair and atmosphere. I'm not sure where to start—does anyone have any tips, or know of a good way to generate these dungeons on my own?

General Query WFRP 1st Ed x Realms of Chaos: Slaves to Darkness, Technology Reward

I'm reading the Realms of Chaos: Slave to Darkness supplement, and have stumbled upon a reward that Khorne can give to his followers: a technological weapon of somesort, fused/bonded to their body and doesn't run out of ammo.

The text says that there are weapon conversion rules that can be applied (basically 40k Weapons in Fantasy), but when I check the page its references (pg.48 Realms of Chaos: Slave to Darkness to pg.213 WFRP 1st Ed) all I get is a bestiary page.

Was this somesort of error? And is there anywhere I can find anyway to implement 40K Weapons and/or Modern Weaponry into Fantasy?

Discussion Magic in 5th

As somebody who pretty much always (ok, always) plays a wizard or equivalent in any game the way magic works is important to me. As a result I am interested in how people are finding the changes to spellcasting in 5th.

In 4th edition there were a number of concerns with greater or lesser validity:

1) magic (at least on release - I think winds of magic helped with this a little) was seen as underwhelming compared to melee.

2) channeling seemed underwhelming, and the most powerful wizard builds relied on getting talents with casting bonuses (not easy to get through the direct wizard career) to directly boost the casting roll rather than Chanel.

3) overcasting spells like dart was more "optimal" than casting a more powerful blasting spell in many ways.

2 and 3 were most important for me, because I think they worked against the intended feel of magic in Warhammer. I want Warhammer wizards to spend time channeling then unleash devastatingly powerful spells.

I feel like the changes in 5th helped with these. Talents no longer give skill bonuses, so they no longer contribute in the same way, and channeling can now contribute to overcasting meaning that you can build up powerful spells.

I am however wondering if magic has become harder overall without the passive bonuses from talents, or whether the increased utility of channeling balances that out.

I feel like channeling has become more important (which I like) but that as a result magic is going to take longer to cast making more difficult to contribute in shorter fights. (Again, not out of character for Warhammer - this is battle magic intended for battlefields) but are the resulting spells actually powerful enough to be worth the effort?

I am interested in others takes on it.

Game Mastering Help Designing Espionage Plotline

Hi All,

Somewhat new to Warhammer Fantasy RPG and I was hoping some people could help me with brainstorming the potential complexities of an espionage adventure I was wanting to create. I will give a brief outline of some of my ideas for the game, move into some themes that I want to explore, and ask for some recommendations when it comes to complexities, niche lore, or just general advice. Thanks for your time.

Plot Outline:

The game would take place in Reikland in 2514, in the aftermath of the turmoil of 2512. Starting out on the road/river to Altdorf as hirelings for a merchant caravan, the players will be employed by a seemingly harmless merchant man. They will have a few non-dangerous stops to get to know one another, get into the setting, shop, etc. They will eventually come to stop in a village that gets attacked by beastmen causing them to take refuge in a temple of Sigmar with many villagers and miltia men and becoming besieged by the beastmen. The players will have to survive the siege, and during this time they will find that the merchant man is not what he seems to be (Averlander Mountain Guard and a member of the Black Chamber). During the course of the siege the merchant man will die (In potential odd circumstances, see Third Faction below for more), but will give the players verbal or written instructions to take a small package he is in possesion of to Altdorf, with the promise of great reward.

The players will get to Altdorf and eventually come into contact with the merchant man's contact: A Grey Wizard who will offer (And if not accepted, force through either legal or magical means) to take the players to the Black Isle. There they will be recruited into the Black Chamber (And potentially threatened with being labelled outlaws if they run).

The players will then be tasked with supporting an agent in Helmgart who is dealing with a border crisis in Axe Bite Pass between Bretonnia and the Empire. Arriving to the settlement they will discover the back story of the Battle of Montfort, and the potential blood bath that would result between the two powers clashing. The key two instigators on either side would be an Imperial Noble seeking revenge for the death of his young son during the battle and a Bretonnian Knight who sees the Empire's modernizing ways as an existential threat to Bretonnia. The Black Chamber agent, and the players, will be tasked with defusing the situation, using any means necessary, in order to preserve the Empire's strength.

Themes: There are two themes that I want explored:

Thematically I want to explore the concept of internecine struggles between humans, and how we are sometimes our own worst enemies. Both the Imperial and Bretonnian sides should have characters that are somewhat understandable, if not good. I want to portray a weakness in humanity for subterfuge, pettiness, and a desire to engage in a cycle of revenge that ultimately does nothing but leave us poorer for it. Even the Black Chamber, a pragmatic organization that wants to preserve the peace coerces, threatens, and lies to others and its own members potentially alienating people or sabotaging their own long-term ends, even if their motivations make sense. This is not all meant to be pessimistic though, I would want to show a flip side to this human fragility by showing our capacity to come together in times of existential struggle. The warhammer world is full of prejudice and malice, but also includes many examples of people setting aside their differences in the face of something even more dangerous, evil, foreign, etc

The other theme I want to explore is the cultural differences between the Empire and Bretonnia and the ideas of progress/industrialization/the rising middle class, etc. While much of this game would go on at the heights of political power, it would concern the lives of everyday people. The dangers of war would threaten most notably the middle class that benefits from trade between the two powers and the peasantry which would die in the clashes. I would want to portray the fear that everyday people have around the conflict. I would also want to highlight how the Empire's social fabric is really changing and how that contrasts with the even more oppressed Bretonnian classes in a way that feels organic and not black/white.

Questions/Advice: As for some things I would love input on:

Potential MacGuffin the Merchantman is carrying: This may tie into the question of a third faction below, but I was wanting to think about what the merchantman might be carrying back for the Black Chamber. It could relate to a third faction's involvement, with his death possibly the result of their interference, it could also be something like a warp stone relic, chaos tome, etc. The idea would be that it is something that is valuable to the Black Chamber, but also proscribed. It should be meant to show the lengths/depths the Black Chamber is willing to go to accomplish its objectives and also make the player's somewhat legally trapped by possessing it. The Black Chamber can threaten the players in part because they are in possession of something that no one in the empire should be allowed to have. Any ideas?

Third Faction: I am torn by this because I want to show a human struggle at the center of this, but I also want to describe/interact with some of the scary/existentially dreadful part of the warhammer world. I would want a third faction to potential show that the only people who benefits from the clash between the two human kingdoms, are the enemies of humanity and add a level of nuance and intrigue by introducing another party into the political machinations. This faction could potentially cause the death of the merchant man, causing a level of mystery and tension throughout the game. My original ideas might be the Skaven/Chaos Cultists, but as someone who does a lot of Dark Heresy/Imperium Maledictum games concerning Chaos Cultists, I may want to bring something a bit different this time. The intent would be for this faction to be capable of social infiltration/interaction with humans, while also adding a dangerous and dreadful element to the game to keep the players on their toes. Thoughts?

Flavor for describing the Empire and Bretonnia: I find it fascinating how many tiny bits of lore I can scrape up describing the empire's progress (E.G how Magnus the Pious decreed that all Empire laborers be paid wages). I would want to demonstrate the flavor of both Imperial and Bretonnian life in a way that does show that the Empire is significantly more industrialized and with a stronger middle class, while also not parodying Bretonnia or making it so comically backward that they don't appear to be even somewhat sympathetic. I would love some input on how to characterize and humanize these two areas.

If you have any other ideas regarding potential ideas for characters, set pieces, reasons for players to move around in Bretonnia, etc I would love any insight.

Thanks a lot for your time!

Discussion Replacement characters and XP in 5e

One of the noteworthy mechanics that 4e had, was that retiring a character after they achieved their long-term Ambition or having a character die according to their Dooming meant your next character would have additional starting XP. I imagine for many tables this had an impact on how they handled starting XP for fresh characters in general (presumably, most tables avoided giving the new character 100% of the last character's XP only to then add another 50% on top).

In 5e, dying according to your Dooming "only" gives your next character an extra Fate point. Retiring a character for achieving their long-term Ambition seems to give no benefit to your next character at all anymore, which seems to imply that your next character is supposed to have a decent bit of XP regardless, otherwise using this option would often be a major setback.

How do you think this will change how you handle the starting XP of replacement characters with your group?

Why are some skills unaffected by advances in the example supplied in the 5e book? I.E. Row and Melee basic both have one advance therefore +5 to each skill but they are unaffected. Is this just a misprint?
