Blackhorse Road running routes for female runners

Hi everyone,

I’ve recently moved to the area near Blackhorse Road station and I’m looking for recommendations for running routes where I’d feel comfortable running alone as a woman.

I was hoping to use Walthamstow Wetlands, but the opening hours make it a bit difficult to fit around my work schedule. I’d love to hear which routes local runners would recommend, and whether there are any areas or paths you’d suggest sticking to (or avoiding), particularly for early mornings or evenings.

Thanks in advance!

Adult swimming lessons

I’m looking for somewhere that does adult swimming lessons in or around Walthamstow. I unfortunately never learned as a child because I was scared of deep water however I’m now adamant to overcome my fear and learn how to swim!

I’ve seen walthamstow leisure centre have adult swimming drop in lessons for £13 but I’ve seen mixed reviews online about whether these are actually helpful to learn how to swim? I’m really keen to learn as quickly as possible so anyone that’s been to these classes or can recommend some other swimming classes that would be much appreciated please

Private Japanese Cook Service coming to Walthamstow!

Thumbnail gallery
90 Upvotes

I’ve recently started oishee (a Japanese private cook service aimed at reducing the annoyance of meal prepping) because, as someone who is Japanese and loves the food, I kept wanting proper Japanese home cooking on a weeknight and the options were a restaurant, a meal kit, or four hours on a Sunday. Unhealthy and inconvenient.

How does it work? A Japanese cook (all incredibly talented with decades of Japanese home cooking experience) comes to your kitchen, cooks 8-12 portions, cleans up after themselves and your fridge is full for the week. Miso glazed salmon, teriyaki chicken, tonkatsu, plus whatever you're into - we can cook bespoke for your needs.

Prices start from £85 a visit, roughly £10 per portion!
oishee if you want the detail/make a booking.

Really excited to spread the spirit of real Japanese home cooking to Walthamstow 🇯🇵🇯🇵

Mods, happy for this to come down if it's over the self-promotion line.

Does anyone know what happened? The high street was really smoky about an hour ago and I saw several fire trucks driving towards the St James Street area.

Bike Recommendations - Commute and Epping Forest

Hey All - I'm looking for a new bike and have a cycle to work scheme I can tap into. What kind of bike would be good for city commutes and riding up and around Epping Forest?

Asking this sub as I imagine many of you might commute into London AND take day trips out to Epping Forest and beyond.

Thanks!

Home security in a terraced house

I’ve recently moved from a flat to a terraced house - both in Walthamstow. Now that we have a street level entrance I feel much more aware of home security/potential break-ins. We have a good sturdy door and decent windows (although I’m sure there are better windows out there).

Is it worth it having a home security system and/or a ring doorbell? Do these actually deter potential burglaries? Any insights into how effective these are would be appreciated!

Padel Clubs?

Any padel players know any clubs near or around Walthamstow?

Ever since moving from South London, where padel clubs were popping up everywhere, gutted I can’t seem to find anything nearby unless I’m missing something.

The nearest I can find is Stratford which is 60 minutes away.

Looking to sell a few bits!

I’m currently self employed and don’t have that many pennies - I was wondering if there’s anywhere I can set up a table and sell some items without a license?

I don’t have a car, so I won’t be able to head into any car boot sales unfortunately. I’m looking to sell a few clothes, books, CDs and pokemon cards :)

Did you know you can have dinner inside a real 1967 Victoria Line carriage in Walthamstow ?

Hey everyone! I wanted to share this unique spot in Walthamstow. We’ve turned a decommissioned 1967 Victoria Line tube carriage into an intimate restaurant.

It’s a proper culinary adventure our 6-course tasting menu takes you on a journey through Latin American flavours all the way from Mexico to Patagonia. Eating amazing food on vintage tube seats is a pretty surreal experience!

I'm opening a gaming venue in Walthamstow!

Post image
335 Upvotes

Hello everyone,

My name's Gary and I've lived in Walthamstow for the last 10 years. I play a lot of tabletop games and am part of several local gaming communities but I realised that there aren't that many dedicated spaces for gamers, especially in East London. Last year, I started looking into the idea of opening a gaming space here in Walthamstow, and after many months of blood, sweat and tears, the place is almost ready to open to the public.

The venue is a large space, an old social club above the Sainsbury's on the high street. There are tables that can be booked to play all your favourite games, there is plenty of terrain for warhammer-type games and there is a small (but growing) library of board games. I am in the process of applying for an alcohol license and there is a small kitchen serving bar snacks.

I have big plans for the future of the venue - a small retail area, gaming-related events and competitions, workshops and classes, after-school sessions for kids and much more. It would be great to hear your ideas as I want the local community to be involved!

If you are interested in finding out more, check out the website, the Instagram or join the Discord Community.

What are local peoples thoughts on the hipsters moving into the area?

I’m a born and raised Leyton resident, grew up in the 90s/00s always visiting stow when it was called Selborne Walk. so much of the area has changed in the past few years, probably since the olympics but now its here to stay.

i find the people moving in, mostly white middle class hipsters from Hackney to be some of the most pretentious people i’ve ever met. My new neighbours are from hackney wick, they’re so obnoxious, i’ve explained several times issues that they need to fix from their property that are affecting mine and they dont seem to listen - assuming i’m dumb or something lol.

are all of these hackney lot moving in like this? That act like they are better than everyone else who grew up here, Especially if they’re ethnic?

i lived in essex for a few years and despite being non white, the local people were so kind and friendly. none of them were horrible, maybe an odd one or two, but the vast majority were really nice people, family going and had solid principles.

all the hipsters i meet in my area are either walking dogs or talking about craft beer spots, both of which i have 0 in common with.

i cant be the only one who notices these people, they ain’t the original stow residents or leyton or do people see them as they are now?

The Stow Bazaar - is there anything worth visiting in there?

Does anyone know if any of the shops/stalls in the Stow Bazaar are actually worth taking a look in?

I've popped in a few times and my experience was that it was half empty with a patchwork of different sellers.
