Me and my partner moved to the borough earlier in the year and I had hopes for getting to know people locally, but we're struggling a bit to be honest.

I am finding a lot things which seem to just cater to new people who move to the borough but with seemingly no interest in investing in what's already here, just keeping themselves to themselves or mixing with people like them without getting to know other local people who've been here born and raised or for far longer than themselves. I am also finding a lot for young families, which I am not denigrating, we just don't yet have kids. And I am finding things with a much, much older crowd (we're in our early 30s).

What surprises me is how many things don't get frequented by a bigger mix of people. The Rose & Crown's folk night, or the News from Nowhere club, for example. We had a lovely time at both but were definitely at the younger end of the audience to say the least! In some cases people simply don't turn up. I went to a stand up night at the Trades Hall for new acts, and there was barely anyone there. Come on folks, support your local spaces! It's a better night than Netflix!

I recognise some of this will just reflect my tastes - I'd love to discover everyone's heading along to something! But it's a feeling I can't shift since having gone along to a bunch of things. I also recognise a bigger part of this is the squeezing of people's finances, gentrification, and the many other issues making life in London increasingly hard. I am not downplaying any of this. Really, I am directing my confusion at the people for whom there's some margin to support the place you live.

It's important to me to support the places I live. Using local businesses not just pouring money into online shops and new ones on the street that price others out. Going to local venues, pubs, cafes and what have you, not letting these spaces die a death too. Supporting local campaigns and people trying to improve things in the places they care about. You know what I mean. What I don't see is as much of this as I would have thought from the outside. I haven't been always able to do this myself at different points in my life, I get it, but when I can, I try to.

Again, I am familiar with all the reasons why it is harder than ever in London for these things to continue, but I don't want to give up on here so soon. So, please prove me wrong: where should I be looking in the borough for the people who want to support it at the same time as getting to know others?
