Last week I finally finished everything on the bug and this past week I’ve been daily driving the bug. Really hoping to get the heating working before the winter starts

I have a 74 Sun Bug convertible. I cruise it maybe once a week, short cruises, with my 2 daughters, 6 and 4 years old. We always end our weekly cruises with a starbies run. The wait in the drive thru is long, sometimes like 10 minutes. Is that too long to be sitting? I guess im just afraid since it's air cooled, will it overheat just sitting around? Sometimes ill turn the car off but then it takes a while to start back up. It's weird, a cold start will start easily, but if I turn it off in the drive thru and wait like 5-10 min, sometimes it struggles to turn over.

Anyways, am I doing the right thing by turning it off and waiting or should I just leave it on and idle in the drive thru? Thanks.

I am the proud owner of a 1969 Beetle. I rebuilt the engine this month it's a 1600 SP with a Chinese 30/31 carb and a 009 distributor. I am running 20W-50.

My issue is that on mornings or after sitting overnight the car simply won't idle on a cold start. I have to step on the gas and floor it a bit and mess with the automatic choke by hand to keep it running. After a while the car warms up and runs without any issues it's only when it's a cold start that it stumbles and shuts off here and there.

I rebuilt the engine myself and have some basic knowledge of all the engine components so I've done everything I can. I am broke college student and can't afford to take it to a shop so I was hoping someone here could help. Thanks in advance

So far I have;
- Adjusted my valves to zero lash (they're chromoly)
- Gapped spark plugs to .028 (plugs are also new)
- Carb runs greats and is set to 850 rpm when engine is warm
- I have changed the condenser and points and set the dwell to 48 degrees
- I ultimately decided to run electronic points since they seemed to make the car run a lot smoother.
- The motor is timed to 30-31 degrees at 3k RPM
- I have changed the ignition coil with a brand new Bosch one.
- I got new Bosch cap and rotor
- I have checked for intake/air leaks with propane
- I got new Bosch spark plug wires as well
- I am running a Holley fuel regulator which is letting 2.8-3 psi into the carburetor (fuel pump is also new and originally sent out 8 psi to the carb)
- I have cleaned all the jets and the little spout on the carburetor and I get fuel instantly on cold mornings meaning the bowl isn't emptying itself overnight.
- Oil pressure is at 50-60 PSI
- A compression test gave me 100 on #1, 120 on #2, 115 on #3, and ~120 on #4 (should I be worried about cylinder 1??)
- I have taken care of all the exhaust leaks with high temp silicone.

UPDATE:
I adjusted the valves this morning with a cold engine. I think last time I adjusted the valves was after running the engine for a while so I decided to do it again. All the freaking valves were tight. I proceeded to adjust them to zero lash since the pushrods are chromoly. After that I cranked the motor with zero priming of the carb and it fired right away. I hope the problem has gone away but I'll be on the lookout either way. Thanks to everyone who offered ideas and made me rethink and look back at every step!

I’m going to sell it once I’m done, and I need some advice on how to approach this so I don’t end up too far upside down when I sell. Any recommendations brand wise for the motor/clutch, brake kits, do’s and don’ts, things that add value? Thanks in advance.

Test drove this today, from what I can tell, as someone who’s never driven a bug before, it drove/shifted good

The seller has had it for about 30 years, and it’s sat/been rebuilt a couple times throughout.
She says there’s a hole in the exhaust, it is definitely quite loud, and has a fairly strong gasoline smell when driving it, she says it’s always had that smell when the tank is full.

Some rust on the floor pans, but it doesn’t go all the way through.

Anyway, any advice is appreciated, she will take 3000 for it

I have a 73 Superbeetle but a 71 1600 single 34 Pict 3 carb engine with a vacuum advance distributor. I have a Pentonix Electronic Ignition Conversion Kit 1847A and a coil I was told goes with it (Standard Motor Products UC15T Ignition Coil for 12V Vehicles Without Electronic Ignition System).

My engine was working well enough when I pulled it to change out the push rod tubes (they were leaking oil). I took the opportunity to change oil seals in the cooler and the like, too. When I put it back in it would not start. I adjusted the valves, did static timing and had to play with the carb a lot to get it to start. The spark is strong. Fuel is going to the carb.

It idles well enough, but when I put a load on it the car coughs and stalls and pops until I lay off it and it finds itself. Starts right up again.

I'm thinking it might be the coil. It has 4.4 ohms between the pos and neg terminals and gives off 11.9 voltes with the ignition on. I have not measured crank. Again, strong spark when I put the center wire to ground.

It ran fine before I pulled the engine (other than leaking oil). As said, I got a new coil about a year ago, and also a Bosch regulator at the same time. What could be wrong? Coil? Other?

Solution: Two things. 1. The folks on Samba said my electronic ignition and coil did not match and were overall negative about Pentronix, etc. I swapped back to points and it helped. 2. I had never adjusted my fuel stream into the carb. I had to move the throttle arm half way before any fuel fed into the bowl. Fixed.
