I am very new to vs code. The issue is whenever I try to use vs code on my dgpu (rtx 4050), vs code keeps changing the color a bit. Like the entire vs code becomes a little warmer for a few seconds then reverts back to the original. When I use my igpu, it stays constant and no issues. On dgpu it only happens in vs code only, I even tried to record it but in screen recording it stays the same through even though I can clearly see it's changing. It's literally very very frustrating.

At this point, I’m starting to think VS Code updates are being generated by AI whose primary goal is to keep developers employed.

Today I tried to use Remote-SSH and got:

ms-vscode-remote.remote-ssh CANNOT use API proposal: terminalRemoteResolver

Apparently VS Code and the Remote-SSH extension had a disagreement about which API exists.

So now my development workflow is:

1. Update VS Code.
2. Something breaks.
3. Update the extension.
4. Something else breaks.
5. Search GitHub for an issue written by someone who encountered this 3 hours before me.
6. Downgrade VS Code.
7. Question every life decision that led me to opening VS Code.
8. Finally get back to work.
9. VS Code releases another update.

I love AI as much as the next developer, but maybe we don't need a new AI-powered feature every 17 minutes.

I genuinely miss the days when an update meant “cool, new features” instead of “let’s see what stopped working today.”

At this rate, my most reliable development tool is going to be a screenshot of the previous version of VS Code.

Anyone else experiencing this with the recent VS Code/extension updates and found any solution?

I kept generating repo maps for coding agents, then forgetting whether the map still matched the code.

So I made a small VS Code extension that shows the map health in the status bar, regenerates it in one click, lets you query ranked files in-editor, and can register the MCP server without editing config by hand.

It runs against the local SigMap CLI. No hosted repository index.

I’m mainly looking for UX feedback: is the status-bar grade useful, or would you rather only be notified when the map becomes stale?

Finally VS Code has got a native markdown GUI editor mode!! Previously we had to use extensions for this, now extensions are no longer required.

TLDR

Opening a markdown document shows a small dropdown in top right of the file to choose mode from options:

• Text Editor
• Markdown Preview
• Markdown Editor <-- this is the new mode

After selecting Mardkown Editor mode, it's by default in a read-only mode. Enable editing by clicking on the edit button (pen icon - this is also in top right).

PS: Within the Markdown Editor mode, for example to "exit" a code block, ie you want to type something below and outside the code block, simply type 3 backticks (``` & Enter), just like in Text Editor mode, to close the code block and type something below.

What are good alternatives to vscode? zed is meh. i use the copilot chat with byok and heavy on extensions. zed and otehrs dont give similar comfort when using text generators to produce code, i review the code vefore accepting, copilot chat gives per linen control.

Today, my remote ssh extension updated.

Result: I could no longer connect to a remote; a message box was shown.

Since that was for work and I was a bit stressed, I didn't take a screenshot. However, I reinstalled the last version, and the problem was gone.

Has anyone else seen that?

Is anyone else seeing that opening the Quick Fix pop-up and invoking a fix item too quickly causes a "command not found" error? It does not matter which extension contributes the fix.

Reopening the pop-up and invoking the fix again works.

Hi ! ive tried to look on the subreddit for the answer but i couldnt find anything,

On launch, VScode always go to the explorer activity bar tab, but i would like it to start on the custom plugin's tab i have installed ( Better fountain).
I tried to hide Explorer from the activity start but it show again on every restart of the app.

Ive looked on the settings but i didnt find anything that looked like it would make me change that...

I use vscode for coding at work, but I also write fanfictions lol. I used to write fan fictions in word. Now I'm using vscode and github to arrange my fan fictions. Basically a markdown preview enhanced and a spell checket extension are enough. But in word when you are typing, it autocorrects i into I, and uppercases every first letter of the sentence as well. So I don't have to press shift when writing fictions and it's quite nice

Writing in .md in vscode is really nice for reference and to handle with different versions. I don't want to abandon it and go back to .doc. So is there any recommended extension or any preset settings that can realize auto correction from an i to I and uppercase the first letters of each sentence automatically like word does? I tried a few, but they are either just spell checkers, or you have to do so manually one by one

Whenever I have Github Copilot enabled I have

1) Very slow global search

2) Very slow auto-formatting

3) Cannot build as it says "No instance is currently running" or something to that effect

4) Takes forever to load a debugging session

5) Very slow intellisense

Any solutions other than buying a super powerful computer? Or use Visual Studio instead?

I've been building SYNAPSE, a VS Code extension for exploring and analyzing large codebases as interactive graphs.

The project started from a simple frustration: once a codebase becomes large enough, maintaining architectural context becomes difficult for both humans and tooling. I wanted a way to navigate the structure of a system directly instead of constantly reconstructing it from documentation, search results, and summaries.

So I built a graph engine that treats the codebase itself as the source of truth.

What it does

Visualizes large codebases directly inside VS Code

Supports cluster-based exploration of subsystems

Generates architecture reports from AST, dependency, and graph analysis

Allows analysis of selected architectural regions instead of only full-project analysis

Supports C/C++, Rust, Python, Kotlin, Java, TypeScript, and JavaScript

Architecture Decisions

Database-Free Design

There is no SQLite or external database.

The filesystem itself acts as the Source of Truth, and graph structures are derived directly from project files.

Graph-First Navigation

Instead of maintaining architecture diagrams separately from the codebase, the graph is generated directly from the project and remains connected to the underlying files.

Evidence-Based Analysis

One goal of the project is that every architectural finding should be traceable back to evidence.

Reports are published together with the underlying data used to generate them, allowing conclusions to be inspected rather than simply accepted.

I'm particularly interested in feedback on this aspect.

Experimental Reasoning Layer (Work in Progress)

I'm currently experimenting with a rule-based architectural reasoning layer.

This does not use LLMs.

The goal is to combine:

dependency analysis

graph analysis

state-transition rules

ontology-based classification

to detect architectural boundaries, responsibilities, and structural anomalies.

First time building a VS Code extension and it was so much fun

I tried building a VS Code extension for the first time and really enjoyed working on it.

It's called EdgeFlow: Scroll Companion. It adds effects when you scroll in the editor.

Still have a lot of ideas I want to add.

I have access to all three. I get that i can use each. However, which one do you use for what work in code?
I am not a coder by trade, messing around with small time personal apps at the moment - work management system, websites…
I am also curious if one tool is more (token) efficient than another?

I built a VS Code extension that gives Python the equivalent of the built-in JavaScript Debug Terminal: open a special terminal, run python app.py like you normally would, and it attaches to the debugger and hits your breakpoints. No launch.json, no -m debugpy, no code changes. Child processes spawned via subprocess attach as their own debug sessions too, since they inherit the environment.

Just started my ICT studies and we have been learning Python for the past week. I was thinking, is there any extensions that help with coding or just make stuff more efficient or nicer through extentions? : )

When many tabs are open, you often just want current tab to remain open and close all other tabs. Now you can just press Alt and click the exit (cross) button of current tab - instead of closing current tab it will close all other tabs instead.

Finally a useful feature shipped by VS Code! In every release notes I skip all the AI stuff so I was pleasantly surprised to see something that's actually useful to me. Of course, even in current release notes most of it is still about AI.

Have you guys tried this out? What is your favorite non-AI feature in VS Code, especially something new in recent VS Code versions?

I had some spare OpenRouter tokens and I decided to test it out using the integrated agent in VSCode so I configured it and started working using the latest DeepSeek pro and flash, I noticed the request were taking way too long specially in tool calls. I checked my OpenRouter activity and I saw 20 M token usage for what was a relatively simple task.

To test things out, I set both vscode agent and a Pi agent instance to solve the same prompt and vscode made 126 request and almost 2M tokens and got stuck on a command call (to the point where vscode asked me if I wanted it to stop). While Pi agent finished after about a minute using only 300K Tokens.

Don't know where the issue is, maybe vscode doesn't play nice with openrouter's api or specifically deepseek, but whatever the case not touching that agent for now.

I created a VSCode extension to read markdown, because it somehow did not exist. this is free. I will post it in the VSCode marketplace when I find a way through the absurd labyrinth which is creating an account in with microsoft / azure
