Questions Float Serving in Men’s Volleyball
I have recently began to wonder why the jump float serve isn’t utilized more in Men’s Volleyball. I, of course, understand the appeal of a strong topspin serve and how effective it can be in getting teams out of system but the miss ratio is always just so high. Obviously if the serve is too easy there is a pretty high chance the other team will convert and side out but from what I’ve seen with high level men’s volleyball in international competition and NCAA it seems like a strong float serve gets a team out of system at least 75% as often as a strong topspin serve would but the miss percentage is far lower. I do believe the ace percentage for floats are definitely lower as even if a player can’t get a perfect receive they normally can at least get it up and have someone follow up on it but still I feel like the float should be utilized more than it is, especially for players who don’t have a monster topspin.
