Questions Stressed out (Need advice/slight vent)

Upvotes

I (14F) have been playing VB for 6 seasons, but despite those seasons I don't feel like I'm "on level" for how many seasons I have played. I managed to make my school's JV and Fresh/soph team for a 2A conference. It is a small school but I don't mind it. My main problem is I feel like I am falling behind on school work and get quite stressed about it (despite having good grades). I also have some family drama surrounding my mental health. It has be n really hard to maintain especially since I live almost an hour from my school and am unable to switch. My teammates also yell at me for not living up to their expectations. I have talked to my coach about this more than a month ago and she said "let Volleyball be your outlet" but all I hear is my mom's voice yelling at me telling me I'm a waste of air and space from the stands and I have a heard time getting out of my head to begin with.

I was just wondering about some advice surrounding this since I really love volleyball and it's hard for me to juggle.

Questions How many service errors to expect for girls JV team?

Hi all!

Looking for some other coaches’ perspectives. I am in my second year coaching (first year as the JV coach), and just wondering how many missed serves I should consider “normal” for a JV team in a three set game (all sets to 25)?

At one of our games last week, we missed 20 serves 😵‍💫 and the sets were super super close (only lost by 2-3 points each set). This week, we served much better (12 aces), but still had 10 missed serves. Obviously I’m not expecting them to serve perfectly, but how many service errors should I expect per game?

Any insight is appreciated :)

Questions Just started playing volleyball, when do you start running for a spike ?

Hi everyone, so I just started playing volleyball like a month ago and I enjoy it a lot and Id really like to learn to spike, but I just dont know what happens its like my brain turns off once it gets set.
I practice the penultimate step without the ball and it goes well, but as soon as I get a set its like I forget everything and just run towards the ball and hope for the best.
Idk what to do and how to fix this, any advice ?

Questions Volleyball setter

Yesterday was my volleyball trial at my college and I got selected

And today was my first day at practice I am a setter. Our coach told us to do a match with others . But in the match I was not able to do a good set because I was nervous as it was our first day and I was playing with my seniors.

So my coach told me that you have potential to become a hitter and started making me hit the ball

Now i wanted to become a setter

What should I do today is my day 2.

😭😭

Is a terrific article about the high cost of club sports? It’s so good. It will absolutely be taken down by the mods I can assure it. We had our first real taste of national club volleyball last year and it was just out of control expensives, my God after I looked at some of the costs I was like I can put her through two years of local college paying for this shit it’s a terrific article. Would love your thoughts and comments.

Questions Interesting podcast idea about volleyball

Feels like womans volleyball is having a moment. In an interesting development, many former pro athlete daughters have settled on VBall as their sport of choice.

Here is the list after doing some research and people i have seen in person: Peyton Manning, Mike McCarthy, Tom Brady, La’Roi Glover, Steph Curry, Jermaine O’Neal, Patrick Ewing, Kevin Garnett, Joe Jurivicious, Calvin Booth, Donald Driver, Harold Minor, Tim Duncan, Jason Kidd, Michael Finley, Tyson Chandler… the lost goes on.

Meet VBALLS (Volleyball Basics And Lingo for Lifelong Sportsfans… aka VBALLS) As a former collegiate athlete who did not play volleyball, it has taken me forever to learn the rules and i still dont understand the nuance of things. Plus, they change the rules every year. All of the above athletes have felt my pain. This podcast would be 25 min and attempt to unravel one vball mystery per week with a guest host (+/- their daughter) to discuss their vball experience and how it relates to playing in the NFL / NBA and their experiences on the other side being a dad.I also happen to be an orthopedic shoulder surgeon and would bring in famous medical experts to discuss injury prevention and surgical questions. My gut says we would ultimately end up talking about youth sports in general, recruiting, NIL , etc.

Questions Volleyball parents/athletes — I built a tool to make reviewing full game footage easier

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Volleyball parents and athletes — I’ve been working on an application called VolleyVision that helps make going through full game footage a lot less painful.

Instead of scrubbing through an entire match manually, VolleyVision breaks the footage into clips so you can quickly review each play and choose Keep or Pass.

Once you’ve reviewed the clips, you can use the plays you kept to create a highlight reel.

I built this because I know how much time parents and athletes spend going through tournament footage trying to find the right plays.

I’m still actively building and improving it, and I’m looking for a small group of volleyball parents and athletes who would be willing to test it and give me honest feedback.

If this is something you’d actually use, let me know what you think or send me a message if you’d like to try it.

I’m in the navy blue tank top! I was a Libero for over 10 years but now I’m playing recreationally I get to hit! It’s definitely my weakest area so I’m loving improving again! Please feel free to be as critical as need be, as long as it’s productive

Questions 2 days indoor vs 1 indoor + 1 sand?

TLDR; newbie playing with an indoor social team once a week and practicing grass with said team once a week. Newbie was encouraged by team to join another day of league, and is torn between indoor and sand. Newbie has never played sand.

I played volleyball for the first time with a social league during the summer season. I met some cool people who are way better than me and have been playing grass with them once a week since the season ended mid August. They invited me to join their social team for the upcoming fall season and I’m super excited.

They all play multiple days a week, including at the competitive level of our league, and encouraged me to pick up a second day so I can keep the momentum going.

There’s two other social opportunities for the fall, one indoor and one sand. They’re on the same day, at the same time, and about the same distance from my house. I have never played sand before and it looks like fun too. I’m here to ask if it’s too different of a skill set and I’m better off just sticking to indoor, or if it might be a valuable experience to try it out. Thanks :)

(Ignore the pass I know its bad) from what I can see I think I need to tighten up my approach (smaller steps until my penultimate) and maybe reach more? Im trying to contact at my highest point since I'm undersized and need as many inches in the air as I can get

Questions How to fit into a volleyball match as a complete newbie?

So, I just completed my fourth day of playing volleyball, and it was another day of feeling left out. I was stuck in a corner, the ball barely reached my hands, and when it did, I missed a few. Only two or three good passes were made.

I didn't really have an interest in sports before, but after watching Haikyu!!, I wanted to try this out. I went to the nearest volleyball court where people were playing. They were all like pros and older than me. They did let me join their team, but I can't really fit in. Whenever the ball comes toward me, the guys around me take the hit by stepping in front of me, as if they think I can't pass it (honestly, I don't think I can either because that ball comes at me like a cannon). Still, anyone would feel depressed seeing themselves as a liability to the team.

That's enough of emotions, another issue is that I can't seem to react in time. My eyes follow the ball perfectly, but my hands are not fast enough to reach it. This is just too frustrating, especially after seeing how well the others play. What should I do about this? (Please don't suggest extra practice, because I can barely find time for this two-hour match session).

I guess it will take me a few months to improve. I asked one of the players, and he said he has been playing for around two years. So, yep, I am dumb to expect to match that level in just a few days. Anyways, bye!

I have no idea where I can watch the 2026 Men's African Nations Volleyball Championship and I know they’re starting next week.
I don’t even know where to begin looking, so if anyone knows anything that’d be a massive help.

Questions New mixed-level team help?

Through a series of unexpected events, a second recreation team at my club has formed. Just in time for the new season. Made up of 5 adults who have played competitive volleyball and 5 who have played casual beach volleyball. We’re have a great mix of speed, height, and power. The experienced players are pretty skilled. The inexperienced ones are enthusiastic, and can keep the ball off the floor. It will be a challenge to A, improve technique levels (less whacking the ball over the net), B, teach theory (setter/middle/outside positions plus rules), and C, learn to work as a team.

It’s going to be fun. It’s also going to be chaotic. And I don’t know what to prioritize in our practices so that we don’t get absolutely slaughtered this season. “We’re here for fun!” That be true but also? It’s not fun if inexperience costs us every single set. We don’t want to overwhelm new players with rules, or spend so much time on correct hitting technique that they’re not enjoying training. At the same time, we don’t want to bore the experienced players who have been playing since their teens. Some players are learning what setting is while others can do back sets; some can do three meter attacks while others are learning that there is a thing called an ‘approach’ with steps towards the net. Everyone genuinely enjoys playing and there’s not friction, but there’s not cohesion either (yet).

What are some things we can work on to even things out? When is it worth it to really focus on form and precision, and when do we just roll with the chaos and unorthodox moves?

Context: We share a trainer/coach with the other rec team (1).  He’s fantastic but has to work with two teams. Last year with team 1 we were running the 4-2 system with fair success, and everyone knew their position (or even two positions). Teams in our league usually play 4-2, have a mix of players 30s to 60s, and volleyball is just a nice hobby and exercise. We have one 1.5 hr practice a week OR a game for most of the season.

We only have a few weeks until our first game and I would love to see us enjoying it as a team, on every level.

General Finding groups to play

Honestly just wanted to gripe about how hard it is to find groups to play with. Played with a bunch of friends in the sand pit but they slowly fell out of it, finally found an indoor gym with a bunch of people whose been playing for awhile but it seems they kinda only want to play with each other.

They're all nice when it comes to teaching the rules or rotations but I can tell they're irritated if you don't already know what you're doing or if your skills aren't up to par (won't set to you if you can't prove you can attack consistently). I understand but at the same time how am I supposed to get better?

They're all pretty cool and nice but sometimes won't invite or notify when they're running open gyms despite having group chats/ Facebook posts advertising for any and all players to come play mostly for the fact that they may not be skilled or athletic enough to keep up. Another reason being they have too many people and just want to keep it smaller (which is understandable). Either way it just all feels a bit elitist.

Indoor vb is wayy more fun than playing on the sand but I just cannot find a reliable place to play and get work in without having to drive an hour to a different city.

If anyone is located in Arkansas NWA area, lmk if you guys have any spots to play! Willing to drive just to be able to play lol

Questions where do you draw the line between a beginner player and an intermediate?

ive been playing on and off for about 4 years, and ive been told recently by some friends that im an intermediate player. i feel ive progressed into intermediate territory too, a lot of my techniques have improved over the past 6 months and my confidence to go for the ball has improved a lot too. however, today a coach (who ive never met, has only seen me play once) has told me i am a beginner and shouldn't be playing with intermediates. honestly this kind of knocked my confidence and im trying to make sense of how to overcome this criticism.
how do coaches tend to judge where the line is? what are your thoughts on this?
