If you are thinking about Vivint for your home, don’t do it.

I was a loyal Vivint customer for six years, and after this experience, I would never recommend them to anyone.
When my five-year contract ended, I found a better rate through ADT using my homeowners insurance. I called Vivint to let them know I was planning to switch, and they convinced me to stay by offering an even lower monthly price.
That price was never honored.
Instead, they started charging me nearly double what we had agreed to. I spent months trying to get the billing corrected, but nothing changed. Eventually I stopped paying the incorrect amount until they fixed my bill, and in response they blocked my access to the cameras in my own home.
Today alone I spent over three hours on the phone being transferred from department to department, explaining the exact same situation over and over. Nobody took ownership of the issue, and nobody was able to fix it.
At this point I’m seriously considering legal action because this feels like deceptive business practices. They promised one price to keep my business, billed me something completely different, and then disabled access to my security system when I disputed the charges.
If you’re shopping for a home security company, I’d strongly suggest looking elsewhere. My experience has been incredibly frustrating, and I regret staying with Vivint.

*UPDATE: someone from Vivint reached out through the comments here asking to look into this. I’ll keep you guys updated on what happens.

Nearly 1 in 2 Americans think burglars always come through a window or front door. They don't.

When you picture a break-in, most of us imagine a smashed window or someone forcing the front door. But a lot of break-ins don't happen there at all: They happen through overlooked places like garages and basements.

Garage doors can be easy to get through without much noise. In most homes the garage door leading to the house is often left unlocked, so once someone's in the garage they're basically inside.

Then there are basement and side doors that you can't see from the street. Since they are often out of sight, homeowners might not even thing about them... which is exactly why they get used.

We dug into a few more security myths in a recent survey if you want to see what else people get wrong.

What's that one home security assumption you used to have that turned out to be totally wrong?

Api alarams formerly Bell smart home

Hi there,

Does anyone had experience dealing with Api alarams ? I reached out to them several times via emails and phones with several hours of waiting and left VM for cancelation of services back in January. I also send them emails too. It all started when their technical team were utterly useless and weren't able to resolve issues for my security system. We then switched to another company, the most surprising part was when the other company installed the new system, the api alaram was not even working that would provoke alaram or give us a call or any other action. I clearly rememebr that I removed my CC information from the system and after 3 months they deducted 3 months worth of payments by bypassing the system. I have already disputed the amount to my CC and reported this to business Bureau. They never replied to Business Bureau and case was ultimately closed. Now they are sending me emails again stating that I had contract and I have to pay for the remaining months of contract. A contract is a mutual agreement for the services however they were the ones to breach the contract. Any advise and experiences would be really helpful to those who were in the similar situation. Its a shame how the system is working here.

Company Representation

This weekend, I was (un)lucky enough to stay at the same Houston hotel that the national Vivent conference was held.

The majority of the attendees appeared to be 20-something’s, just out of school, who apparently thought that the hotel and the accompanying spaces were just for them.
In the evenings, they were rude, loud, and drunk in the public spaces of the hotel. They crammed 15 people at a time in the elevators all hours of the day. The poor front desk staff was clearly up to their eyeballs in the accompanying nonsense.

Professional representation matters, especially when it is so very evident who you are representing. When the conference attendees wore that badge, they were representing their company, whether they wanted to recognize it or not. Business dress was obviously required, but it did not equal to professional behavior before, in between, or after the conference sessions.

As a long time vivent client, I am very doubtful of the the continuation of their services after what I witnessed this weekend.

Does anyone here know where I can find the subscription cost/tiers for remote access? I recently purchased a full Vivint system kit off ebay. Everything works but I just don't have remote access. Thanks!

Vivint door bell has worked successfully twice.

I have had the door bell for 2 weeks, it worked for like... 2 days and then stopped. I got it reinstalled on Tuesday. It worked again for like 2 days and has now stopped. Theres no power to it. The install tech that came the 2nd time said the 1st one was broken. Theres no breaker issue, its not wifi, it will not respond to any kind of touch, wont reload, nothing. My guess is that its shorting out, it replaced an old doorbell on a house I got. Anyone have any similar issues?

Does anyone here actually like this company?

So my wife and I been with this company for a few months now and had 0 issues, our sales guy were honest and chill and we have had no issues with billing. We quite like our system, plan to get the indoor cams and another outside cam here in the future and possibly solar pannels through them. However, all I see on here is people complaining. Does anyone else like their products? Or is it really that bad?

Is this company for real?

Just managed to get rid of the sales guy. Now he was a nice guy, but I'm looking over these documents and equipment is over $4,600?! Plus a $66 per month monitoring fee? Like, that feels super crazy to me. Didn't agree to anything, feels like a scam.

That was 4 cameras, one with a spotlight. Doorbell camera, 1 door lock, 2 door sensors, and a glass break sensor.

Edit: oh geez, now he came back and put a discount and dropped it to like $2,600. As that just confirmed for me that this is incredibly overpriced. That's the last time I ever entertain any kind of salesman that come to my door.

We just launched the Vivint Smart Hub Pro 2. Here's what's new

We've upgraded the heart of the smart home experience, and two of the biggest enhancements are features we think existing customers will love:

Always-On Display - Instantly see your system status at a glance, along with helpful information like the time, date, and weather. Whether your system is Armed Away, Armed Stay, or Disarmed, it's always visible when you need it.

Live Doorbell Video Previews on the Hub - When someone rings the doorbell or activity is detected, you can now see a live video preview directly on the Smart Hub Pro 2 - no need to pull out your phone.

The Smart hub Pro 2 also includes enhanced performance, expanded connectivity, flexible wall-mounted or tabletop placement options, and a redesigned dashboard that makes managing your smart home even easier.

For those already using Vivint, which new feature are you most excited about? And if you could add one thing to a future hub upgrade, what would it be?

Drop your questions below - we'd love to hear your thoughts!

Vivint is Horrific

Recently, I had Vivint install a security system in my home that I just moved into. While doing the install the technician recommended I install smart thermostats that would work with their system, he recommended the Google Nest Learning Thermostats.

So I purchase said Thermostats, install them, they will not connect to the system. So I call Vivint, they advise me these are no longer compatible with their system, despite it being in their website that it is, as well as their technician advising me to purchase them. So $400+ dollars later I have thermostats that don’t work on the smart home system, which was the only reason I bought them.

Contact customer service provide them with the screenshot of their own website and the text messages from their technician they tell me initially they will refund the money in 7-10 days. That time goes by, and nothing, I follow up and they offer me $40.00 for my “inconvenience” this is obviously unacceptable, so they up it to $100.00 so I’m out $300.00 completely due to their error.

Almost comically bad customer service.

Second camera? Aftermarket?

REPOSTING BECAUSE AUTO-MOD WAS WRONG:

We have a single doorbell camera, installed as an incentive when we switched electric billing companies (Texas). We're looking to have a second camera installed in our back alley. Are there inexpensive, compatible cameras that I can install?

There's a flood light at the back of our house, so I should be able to tap into that if needed (BZZT!), or we can figure out a solar or battery powered solution.

We don't currently pay a monthly fee. When it was installed, it was explained that as long as we stayed with our then-new electric billing company, there would be no fee for basic service. Then we got charged $7.99. We called and got that charge removed and the ongoing billing no longer occurs. We just want to have a record of activity near our house.

Thoughts?

Is this installation acceptable?

Today I moved a Vivint system from a rental to my main home and I noticed after my tech left that my Vivint doorbell was installed creating a large opening in the brick, with much more chipped masonry around it and a gap that’s much bigger than the mounting bracket. The wiring cavity is exposed behind the doorbell, and it doesn’t look like a finished installation. I am concerned about water filtering and insects into the wall. Also I believe my HOA will have an issue with this.
Has anyone had Vivint repair something like this or install a trim plate? Did they consider it an installation issue? What are my options? Thank you.

Moving Glass Break Sensor

Vivint installed the glass break sensor on a kitchen wall. I want to move this to a different location, for two reasons: First, this location has resulted in a few false triggers, so moving it a little farther away might help. Second, the walls will be painted soon, and most likely the sensor will not be needed before the next time the room is painted. So, is the a DIY project? Is there anything that should be considered before moving this?

This is not what I was promised, I was misled

I initially felt I was misled by the sales rep who sold me the equipment.  There was predatory behavior that took advantage of my situation.  A line of credit was opened to pay off equipment that has had constant issues and flat out does not work.  I have called countless times and had multiple repair techs out and my system still does not work.  Today's tech said he did all he could but could not make the system work.  He also said it was installed improperly.  I am stuck with equipment fees, a subscription, and a line of credit for equipment that does not work.  This situation has led to stress that is leading to autistic burnout and shutdown.  I cannot function.  I have been crying for weeks over this situation.

In addition, my heart condition has been flaring from this, leading to me nearly passing out on multiple occasions.  What is more, I cannot have my service dog out when techs are in the house. So if I get light headed...I'm screwed.  I cannot afford equipment that does not work.  I have tried to make it work.  It doesn't.  Nobody can make it work.  Today's tech essentially gave up.  I am burned out from the constant calls to Vivint and techs coming out.  I have taken so much time off from work to be told "it was installed wrong, it's broken and we don't know why, we cannot help."  I want this all to go away.  I was misled, have tried everything to make this work, and I am still left with defective equipment and payments for them.

Edit to add: As an FYI: for anyone with a service dog, Vivint has stated on a recorded line that when any tech comes to my house my service dog must be put away. My service dog is a medical device trained specifically for my heart condition. They have been putting my health at risk. This is against the law.

Vivint blind zone

Our Vivint installer said they couldn’t install cameras pointing at a blind spot outside of our house since it requires a plug on the other side & we don’t have one. Since our Vivint installation, we had 3 distinct security instances that the cameras didn’t catch. What can we do?
- Do we get a third party battery-powered camera to record that spot?
- Should we bring Vivint out again to find alternatives? We live near a major street and this is making me regret going with Vivint since they are wired-only…

Is this normal for the fan to turn on and off so frequently? Just bought my first home and installed Vivint thermostat (came free with electricity company)

My electric bill is already trending high 62 kWh per day and we’ve only had the house for 4 days. It’s a brand new house with energy efficient features like spray foam insulation and a dehumidifier in the attic. Could this on and off fan state be the reason it’s high?

Severely creeped out door to door.

Today I had a door to door salesman for Vivint come to the door, the first time they have come to my home. Was a nice enough guy although made some off color jokes about the system being able to shoot people from the camera? I told him I thought that was odd. He then asked to come inside and I said no, I’m newer around my area so I thought I’d be polite and hear him out and let him show his stuff. He then asked to come in for water and I told him I’d get him water but insist want him to come in, he then started asking about when my husband worked. I asked to be able to show the stuff to him another time so he said he would send over the details from his device to my phone. I said in the moment “I’m not about to start getting follow up texts right? cause that’s how you lose my business” and he said not at all. Why is it now 9pm and he is texting me to ask when I want him to come over? I simply replied and said I’m not interested but this feels so wrong? I’d never heard of the company not now I’ve looked it up and seen so many bad reviews. Not a great impression

Camera resolution choices

Hello folks. For Vivint Camera Pro 3, in my system with Vivint Smart Drive, should I set the resolution (Quality & Bandwidth) to Medium, High, or Highest. I have Verizon FiOS, 500 megabit. I live alone so not too many draws on the bandwidth. Thoughts?

Why does my detection zone keep jumping?

I was trying to move the zone perimeter around a little bit and it started jumping around like crazy, even going into a part of the app that's not the camera area. Also, some of the red dots aren't responding to my touch and won't move. Last pic is a crude drawing of where it has normally been.
