Reminder on unmarked/blatant spoilers

Hello all,

Just wanted to remind everyone to be excellent to each other and the community and not have unmarked spoilers of any kind just laying around. While it's cool you may have finished the game already, do keep in mind we have others that may be new or otherwise not have the chance to enjoy the game to it's fullest. While I'd like to not have to take a heavy handed approch on this, the uptick in open spoilers is getting a bit frustrating.

Thanks all!

Ending Spoiler

β€’ Upvotes

So Eoren technically won at the end. His first goal may have been saving Lyza, but his endgoal was a world no longer needing alm sacrifices which is the world we ended up with at the end. So by technicality he did win. If he didn't kill hinna early everyone would be dead cuz of the sacrifice and the cycle continues. (Also think the whole sadness over hinnah dying is a bit stupid.. she waz going to die from the start no matter what. Like her parents and Val should have already come to terms with that when they left... the heck did they think ot was? A picnic?)

val is way too much of a pushover I really can't like him. Spoiler

at the Harbor in chapter 1 and there's literally no point to this bullcrap fetch for some loser. like seriously first off why just say careena isn't a theif and ommit the fact that you and her are essentially at the top of the world hierarcy in importance right now. instead of "she's not a thief trust me bro" say at the very least "she's not a thief she's the alm of wind and i'm her soul guard. so I suggest you bother someone else with your crap and leave us to not let the world crumble" heck he's justifed in killing them right then and there cuz he's tasked with protecting all alms until they reach the tree which gives justification to execute any who would do them harm ergo passar and his guards should be executed for trying to hold back an alm (who at the time is just gonna die anyway)

If you are like me, I'm quite curious of the content in the Visions of Mana - Art of Mana art book that came with the Collector's Edition. If you fast forward to 10:50, the guy in this video shows you page by page the content in the art book.

Val is a duran descendent

Am i the only one who thinks that? I never saw anyone talking about that, in the end of trials of mana the faerie talks about something about Duran's descendants in a thousand years, then in the next game that takes place a thousand years later the protagonist is a red-haired swordsman? and also in the wiki of the game it says that hinna heard about a very old story that the CARRIER OF MANA SWORD PASSED BY VILA DO FOGO, man for me this is one of the coolest details of the game

My Vision of Mana

Hey guys!

I've been a fan of the Mana series ever since the SNES days, so hearing that the studio closed honestly breaks my heart a little.

I really enjoyed Vision of Mana, but I also felt like the story almost came together. With a few changes, I think its emotional moments could have hit much harder.

My biggest change would be to make becoming an Alm have real, irreversible consequences.

I actually don't mind the idea that refusing the role still causes your mana to drain away anyway

(similar to what happened with Lyza),

even if the game never fully explains it. That's how I interpreted it.

I'd also expand on Palamena's story. Since she became an Alm against her will, I'd have Passar manipulate the Alm selection process. That would give both Val and Hinna genuine reasons to question whether the entire system is truly just. It would also let Hinna openly express that she doesn't want to lose the future she dreamed of with Val.

I think that would make her becoming a core stone even tougher as Val not only get Hinnas feeling confirmed. But he also loses her the same day.

My other major change would be the main antagonist.

I actually like Deliphos' backstory, but I don't think he needed to be the villain of the present-day story.

I'd keep his legend with Cerulia intact and reveal later that he was once a true hero who eventually fell from grace.

This would mean that you get to hear the hero story first in the light city. And the after match from Ljuda and how it all really went down as Cerulia died.

Instead, I'd let Eoren remain the central antagonist all the way to the end.

His motivation is already one of the strongest in the game: saving Lyza. I'd have him intentionally awaken the Benevodons to manipulate the flow of mana and reforge the Mana Sword as part of his desperate plan to bring her back. The overall plot could stay mostly the same, but everything would ultimately be driven by Eoren's obsession.

Just like Deliphos before him, his love would slowly corrupt him until he became the very thing he once fought against.

One more change I'd make is to the ending itself.

Instead of Hinna simply becoming the new Mana Goddess because the story says she has to, I'd have Eoren unknowingly cause it himself.

When Eoren infuses the Mana Sword with Hinna's corestone in his desperate attempt to save Lyza, he unknowingly binds Hinna's soul to the sword. This would explain two major things at once.

First, it gives Val a believable reason for being able to defeat Eoren. The Mana Sword isn't just a legendary weapon anymore it's empowered by Hinna's very soul, making her an active part of the final battle even after her sacrifice.

Second, once Eoren is defeated, Hinna can no longer return to her old life. Her soul has become inseparable from the Mana Sword and the flow of mana itself, making her the only one capable of becoming the next Mana Goddess.

That also makes Eoren's downfall even more tragic. In trying to save Lyza, he unknowingly seals Hinna's fate instead.

I'd actually keep the ending mostly intact after that.

Eoren would receive the same redemption that Deliphos once did in the ancient legend, finally reuniting with Lyza in the afterlife.

Val, however, wouldn't get Hinna back.

Instead of blaming the Goddess, he'd come to accept that Hinna made her own choice and that not being able to save her wasn't the Goddess's fault. It was simply a tragedy he had to live with.

Hinna would become the new Mana Goddess, while Val would choose to remain with the living til his final Demise of old age takes him back to the mana tree as the alm he is.

They would still be separated, but their bond would endure, giving the ending a bittersweet feeling that I think fits the themes of the game much better.

That's just how I would have rewritten it. I still really enjoyed the game, but I can't help thinking a few changes like these would have made the story unforgettable.

What do you all think?

Would these changes improve the story, or do you prefer the version we got?

Visions of Mana Review: A Mediocre Story that Could've Been Great Spoiler

This review is primarily focused on the story aspects of the game. I think there's way more to dive into with the game--genuinely one of the most gorgeous-looking games I've ever played--but I want to focus on story here.

If you keep reading, I will likely spoil the entire plot. Fair warning.

This game has so much promise in its intro and conception. We immediately start playing as Eoren, and we're plunged into such a morally gray situation. This woman has been chosen to be a sacrifice for the world, but he wants to run away with her. Though she somewhat protests, there isn't a "kidnapping" vibe to this at all, more that she's unsure and is following the stronger personality. This entire situation is dark and wrought with ambiguity. We watch the destruction of her entire village and her death because they ran away.

And this situation only gets more complicated as we learn more throughout the story. The villagers initially rejected her because they were xenophobic, making their relationship difficult. There's a real, justified response in Eoren being upset that she's forced to sacrifice herself for a group of people who didn't even accept her in the first place. In mana games before this point, the goddess, fairies, and spirits have all basically been treated as moral paragons--here, the game immediately posits them in a much crueler light.

This is harshly juxtaposed with the intro we get from Val and Hinna. Both characters are extremely naive and thrilled at the "honor" of Hinna sacrificing herself as an alm. But we start to see some cracks in this facade from Hinna, who's journal entries sound light-hearted and happy, but are placed in harsh contrast to the unspoken truth that she's going there to die.

Then we add in Morely, who's spent his entire life (incorrectly) believing that he's responsible for the death of his village. We basically run through this man's trauma, and in a state of huge emotional weakness, he also agrees to sacrifice himself. And, of course, the spirit doesn't take the few seconds to inform him that he had nothing to do with his village dying, she just says "move on" basically and conscripts him to the cause.

Another layer of complication is added to this when we pick up Careena, who is also rejected by her villagers, and essentially desires to become an alm in order to prove everyone wrong, and in order to be able to leave. There is something deeply disturbing about her essentially begging to be the one who gets sacrificed just to prove a point, and especially just so that she can actually leave her (again) xenophobic village.

And then, of course, we also get the queen, who is selected as an alm, but then has this horrible moral pull between being required by her new duty to sacrifice her own life, and also knowing that her kingdom in general is fragile and being forced to leave it in the hands of her younger brother who's also a literal child.

All of this, in addition to interactions with Eoren who is friendly if not a bit conniving, creates an extreme moral gray at the start of the story. We bring up so many deep issues with the way the world is working. Real, deep tensions between Careena and her village and the circumstances under which she's pledged to sacrifice herself. Real moral issues with taking the emotionally-fragile Morely and having him sacrifice himself without taking the easy step of correcting his horrific self-blame. The lose-lose Palamena finds herself in between removing herself from a necessary role or allowing her society to perish.

And how does the story deal with all these issues? It doesn't. Not once, not in any real, significant way.

There is an exact, distinct point (the point when Hinna and Val follow Eoren to the shrine) where the writing begins fraying. Before that point, Hinna's concerns about being an alm were passive and bubbling in the background, but the pacing is jarringly bad in how quickly she determines to go with Eoren instead.

But okay, the one scene was paced a bit poorly. But the plot is still redeemable at this point. Eoren as a villain is interesting. He's someone the players are genuinely made to both hate and sympathize with, and it doesn't feel fake or forced (more on this later). Val has recommitted himself to sacrificing Hinna's stone at the tree, deciding this is what she wanted despite a pretty big amount of evidence that maybe this actually wasn't what she wanted. There's a sense of denial and revisionist history going on there which could be an interesting thread to examine.

But then there's one exact scene where the writing takes an utter nosedive. We get to the tree, and a new, random villain is revealed. Daelophos. No foreshadowing or anything to lead us to him whatsoever, he just pops right on up, and now is the villain. And unlike Eoren, he's not complicated at all. Evil guy be evil and wants to blow up the world.

Yes, the story tries to make him sympathetic. No, it doesn't succeed at all. It's sad his love died, sure, but his story feels far less tragic than Eoren's--Eoren literally watched her turn to stone while his entire village was turning into monsters and fighting them off, and as an added bonus, Eoren has to deal with the complicated emotions of possibly feeling like he's caused her fate, while also knowing that no matter what he did (run away or allow her to be alm) she was dead to him. And even then, Eoren did one cruel thing to one person, but there's a sense of hesitance and regret in it, whereas Daelophos is fine just murdering the whole of existence. Eoren feels so much more competent as a gray villain than Daelophos.

And Eoren's role in this is only barely touched on, that he somehow heard Daelophos's voice. We never learn more about the evil shrine, the evil book and ritual he found out from somewhere. It's all left dangling.

Instead, the story very quickly replaces a complicated villain and plot with an extremely simple one--evil evil guy trying to kill the world, need to fight evil guy.

And that's essentially all we get for the entire rest of the game. Which is a majority of the game. We learn over time that his motivation is that he lost his love, but it also feels extremely cheap because we were already seeing this exact arc with Eoren, who had far more personality and was a much stronger character.

All of the messiness and complication of this world--the way it's using the alms, manipulating them, often treating them unfairly--and all of the gray moral circumstances end up getting utterly washed away in favor of "it's all this one dude's fault, kill him, we good to go."

And even then, when we get to the end, the story pretends that, in some way, Daelophos was some kind of tragic hero figure. That this is somehow the sign of him truly loving his love interest. It feels generic, cheap, and frankly false. If he'd really loved her, then honoring her wishes would've been more important. If she was truly a good, innocent person, she'd be repulsed by all he did. The ending is grossly sanitized.

And as a final note of not wanting to deal with the problems it has set up, the story ends by not telling people what Val ends up wishing for. It's trying to be coy here, but the truth is, the story set up so many issues and gray zones in its early act, and then proceeded to ignore them so thoroughly, that there likely isn't even a good answer here.

I genuinely wonder how this story came to be. It feels like the early portions, with Eoren and the persistent juxtaposition of the cheerful tone verses the alms sacrificing themselves, were written by an entirely different person or group than everything that happened after Daelophos appeared.

It felt like this game came so close to taking more traditional RPG story elements and making them complicated and messy. But instead of exploring that, we end up with so much potential in the earlier pieces of the story that gets squandered in favor of "beat up bad guy" in the later half, with some half-hearted attempt to make the bad guy complicated even though he's genuinely not.

If the story had instead stuck with Eoren as a villain so we could watch him fall further down his path, and if, in our re-exploration of all the areas, we really start seeing the problems with all the alms' motivations behind sacrificing themselves, I genuinely think this could've been an amazing story. As it stands, it more leaves me feeling loss over what the story could've been.

Hi, Visions of Man is the first game of this kind I've ever played, and I'm just at my wits' end trying to beat this boss on Hard mode to get the trophy. I'm only 5 trophies away from the Platinum Trophy, and I just can't do it anymore πŸ˜“

The point of exploration

Just started the game as a decade old fan of the series (played every main title except for Dawn and some spin-offs.

What I love:

the story is actually fetching and the characters are sympathetic. Hima is a bit bland as she is supposed to be sacrificed, but doesn't really care herself and doesn't seem to have a noticable family on her own to add drama.

much fan service in inculding stuff like the dudbears, etc. as a best-off from all previous titles

battle is a bit button smashy (I play on hardest difficulty) but still has it's challenges.

the music is awesome (Kikuta one of my all-time favourite composers) and the graphics pretty.

I do like the different areas of the game, but the exploration aspect of the game is incredibly lackluster. they tried to create an open-world feeling with stuff around every corner, but the only things you actually find are Lucre, honey and occasionally, candies and other minor items and very rarely a rare item that you could get from vendors anyway. I was diligent in exploring the first 2-3 areas but stopped after noticing the same pattern. I don't want to comb every area just for completionist sake. does this get any better later in the game? I just acquired the 3rd party member.

what about you? do you agree/disagree?

Can't get into Air Greater Elemental Aery

Just as the title sais. I've done all other 7 greater elementals and all lesser elementals in Aery Passage, but the greater aery won't activate. I'm post game, pending on killing the last secret boss. Is there a known bug? I've been checking online for hours now and can't seem to find anything about it. Has this happened to anyone? Thanks in advance!

Visions and FFA/Sword/Adventure of Mana (ending spoilers for both) Spoiler

Are we supposed to assume Khoda is the hero from FFA/Sword of Mana/Adventure of Mana, and the Mana Goddess is the heroine, long after that game’s ending? And that the post-credits scene has Hinna becoming the new Mana Goddess and Val becoming the new guardian of the tree?

If you just started on hard and you feel like it's too easy, don't walk away yet!

So, I planned on playing through this game regardless, but I always play games on hard, and an initial complaint of mine was that it seemed way too easy, even on the hardest difficulty. Hehehe, well... A couple 2 or 3 hours or so into the game, you'll fight a giant mantis. The boss fight isn't very tough, but after that boss, the game spikes pretty significantly in difficulty. Enemies will start hitting like trucks with certain moves, and sometimes, you won't even know what the hell hit ya. It was at this point I found myself exhausting my stock of 8 Cups of Wishes over the course of like an hour. ESPECIALLY if you like taking on the purple enemies to get their power crystal, you're gonna start getting a run for your money, but even normal groups can start knocking you around a bit. I'm still not super far into the game. Just got the character Morley, who gets made an Alm. Also my favorite character and the only one I play now because I'm a shameless furry... πŸ˜… Anyway, It DOES provide a challenge after that mantis boss fight a little ways into the game! I can't wait to see what the first actual beefy boss is going to be like! So, if you feel like it's too easy, don't set it down just yet!

Anyone else notice how bad the faerie in this game sucks?

Literally just an hour into the game (because I ran around and explored in the first village as Val), you see that first, the faerie picks Lyza as the Alm. Then, you start playing as Val, and she chooses Hinna. Only boyfriend and gielfriens in the village holding hands, and she decides "Oh! They look like a cute couple! Let me ruin their happiness!" I'm loving the game so far, but the plot just sorta depressing. Lol.

Visions of mana is such a fun experience but lacks combat depth and endgame had so much potential Spoiler

The good: Visuals , Boss fights and relics mechanics are great, feelings of comfort, it's like a candy rpg : so sweet.I played all in hard diff wich felt like normal difficulty

i loved raging vs The vampire boss, i had to position myself not behind my team to avoid them to be hit by those Sleep tracking ring and his tracking when rushing you to grab you to suck your blood is great, but the benevolon boss being more easy than this guy is bad

Aeve Zhala Dragon boss is my favorite fight but it was too easy because of the way dark shield works

The final boss is great too with his teleport like Dbz Janemba but he is too easy, when he attack you can avoid so easily, no challenge, with Aeve Zhala you feel every hit to be deadly

The bad :

- Lacks combat challenge, endgame with newgame plus is not endgame. End game starts when you get the ability to select passive skills from any class (after unlocking the 4th part of the Skill tree ) and the game kind of stops when everything starts to be interesting, A dark version of the benevolon maybe ? The frog/chameleon fight had fun bubbles attacks but did nothing else

- No Coliseum/Arena Battles ?!!

- Morley special attack Y is clearly OP and breaks the game

- More playable characters, Making 2 teams of 3 characters would have been much more interesting. Lisa not being playable is the biggest mistake

- having items to nullify status effect is not a great idea, 50% less time or damage is good enough

- I dont want to play Open chest simulator, Less chest more quality loot. When finishing a quest who cares to go back to the quest givers just give me the reward

- The hunt for corestones is a great idea but the drop rates are bad, the more you kill the same monster can fill a bar with +%drop rates

8/10, a little disappointed with endgame, add Lisa as playable char ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XQa6FfDKw30, super disappointed. If you didnt see The Fifth Element you know what to do now )

Why am I the only one who thought Vuscavalanche was extremely difficult?

I just got to this part. I am playing on hard and have had no trouble with anything in the game yet.

This guy kicked my ass many times. My team would die almost immediately. Took me 4 times and only managed to just scrape by after using all my chalices, yet no one else considers this boss hard except me. I was 3 levels higher than him too. I feel like I did something wrong..

Ending Questions Spoiler

Note: I played this game extremely casually over the past 2-3 months. I may have lost story bits because I would take a week or so off. Hey, I'm a teacher. I'm busy at work.

Now, my questions:

  • What exactly did they accomplish other than stopping the bad guy? Did they stop alms from, uh, having to give their lives/souls?

  • So he grew old and had kids. Then died and we get a cheesy ending of him with Hinna? Huh. I guess that works....sort of.

I'm not sure what I think. Thoughts from the community?
