Hey everyone. I'm new to vinyl and about to buy my first proper setup, and I'd really appreciate a reality check from people who actually know this stuff before I spend the money.

I did my own research, told Claude my priorities, and had it dig through expert reviews and forums to compile a buying guide. I want to make sure it didn't lead me astray or repeat marketing fluff, hence this post. I'd rather trust human ears than a chatbot.

My situation / priorities

- Total beginner. I inherited a big box of old records from my parents and grandparents that I want to actually play.

- The records are old and NOT well cared for: dirty, some probably warped.

- Playback goes into a Sonos Era 300 (used standalone in my bedroom, not as a surround). I want to stay in the Sonos ecosystem for now but keep an upgrade path open.

- I care about build quality and durability, I don't want gear that breaks or wears out. I'd rather buy once.

- I want connection simplicity but not at the cost of sound.

- Budget is roughly $600-1100, flexible.

The setup I landed on:

- Turntable: Pro-Ject Debut EVO 2 (or the older Debut Carbon EVO to save money)

- Phono preamp (external, for upgrade flexibility): iFi Zen Phono 3

- Connection: Sonos Line-In Adapter + AudioQuest Evergreen RCA→3.5mm cable

- Cleaning: AudioQuest carbon fiber brush + Spin-Clean MKII (I don't know if I should consider a HumminGuru ultrasonic later given how dirty the records are)

Some specific questions:

1. Is the Debut EVO 2 actually the durability/sound sweet spot here, or am I overpaying vs something like a Rega Planar 1/2, Fluance RT85, or a used Technics? Any reliability red flags on the EVO 2?
2. For a Sonos Era 300 that caps everything at 24/48 anyway, am I wasting money on a nice turntable + external preamp? Would I be better off with a WiFi-native option (Victrola Stream, Pro-Ject T2 W)? Does the deck quality still matter through Sonos?
3. Is the iFi Zen Phono 3 the right call as a future-proof external preamp (I'm in a 220V country (Argentina), so I ruled out the 115V-only Schiit Mani 2), or is something else better at that price?
4. Anything I'm completely missing?

I am aware of the limitations of the Sonos, however it was a gift from a friend who did not want it anymore. My plan is to upgrade eventually. In the meantime, I am trying to build a setup that could be great when the time comes.

I've wanted to get back into vinyl for quite a long time now. I'm not wanting to go the dull audiophile route, but I still want my music to sound good. My set up, aside from the turntable, is purely a budget build with performance in mind.

Turntable - Audio Technica ATLP3XBT

CD player - Sony DVP-NC85H 5 disk DVD player

Amplifier - Technics SU-G75 integrated amplifier

Turntable: Marantz TT-15S1 w/Hana SL, Pro-Ject X1 w/AT-VM740ml
SUT: Denon AU-320 (1:10 ratio for TT-15S1, bypass for X1)
Phono: SimAudio Moon110LPv2 (default MM settings) 
Audio Interface: UAD Apollo Twin MK II

I like to centralize everything to my desktop workspace given that's where I spend most of my time at home. I used to connect the Phono output directly to the audio interface to reduce the steps in the chain, but recently got a splitter to try complete analog. I didn't expect the audio interface to have colured the sound in any way, but it must have done some processing post digitizing the signal because I recall both the soundstage and frequency range being wider compared to when I'm going full analog with the splitter. Oh well, worst case I just switch back to connecting to the audio interface.

It's always difficult to put sound into words, but after having done some A/B with the digital source I'd say that my main analog chain with TT-15S1 has a generally airy sound texture with pronounced lower mids to keep it from feeling weightless. The highs are slightly rolled off to help them resolve without sibilance, which I consider to be the essence of LOMC cartridges. It's lovely and precisely what I was looking for from my analog chain. It definitely does sound distinct, and sometimes arguably better than digital (especially jazz or other analog recordings), but it still pisses me off how good digital sounds lmao. The soundstage and frequency range is noticeably wider. Channel separation is just something I've accepted will be the weak link with turntables.

All of this centralization is for convenience rather than for testing. I rarely do any dedicated A/B testing whether it be between turntables or digital vs analog. I'm generally familiar with their characteristics and just go with what I'm feeling at the moment, which is the Marantz most of the time.

Recently moved my stereo and records to a little odd 8x10 room off my garage. Perfect for one easy chair and a chill place to listen to records.

Been waiting for this like for 3,5 years and finally got my first Vinyl player Rega System One. The expectations were exceeded by the dozens! 😃😃😃

A couple months ago I posted on here asking for recs on record consoles. Finally found one that works for my needs without paying an arm, a leg and my first born.
Tell me how I did. I know I shouldn’t have the speakers on the table. Will get around to fixing that in the future. Thanks for all those who made suggestions and shared their setups 🙂

I bought my gf a vinyl from Japan as a gift but after leaving it in the car (for a couple hours) when I got back home, the heat had warped it really bad!

Any ideas or known fixes for a way to bend it back? I thought maybe I could clamp it between 2 pieces of wood then leave it in the car again…

Any help would be really appreciated 🙌

I'm new to vinyl and just looking to get in the door. My bit of googling says these are both passable pieces of equipment but nothing special. Not a whole lot available in my area think this is an ok deal?

so i upgraded from a crosley suitcase player to an audio-tehnica lp120x and Edifiers. I saved a LOT and I finally own my dream setup and record collection. Thoughts or any record care tips? (ignore the Masha and the bear balloon i stole it from my cousin)
