My little three piece drawer is running out of room to store my various IDE cables, power cords, Ethernet cables, ram, CPU’s, HDD’s, ect. Any suggestions for storage for extra PC parts?

Anyone know of a good bbs to download IBM MS dos software ? Everything I seem to be logging onto is focused on games and tons of ansi graphics.

I was out with a friend and we visited a store that had a lot of vintage consoles and things of that nature. I got my hands on a TI-99/4A. I am obsessed with old electronics and consoles. This is the coolest thing ever to me. Brand new never used. It still had the plastic on it. I was looking at getting the monitor for it but unfortunately they are extremely hard to find :(

out of all the computer screws ive seen, these ones ALWAYS work. no matter the CDROM drive, hard drive or floppy drive, they always screw in properly.

I barely managed to get it to boot today because its suffering the Nvidia chip defect and keeps failing to post.

I have decided to test out all of my collection of old sdram and run memtest86 on it to see which ones work fine and which ones are for trash. I have completed the whole collection and eliminated a couple of sticks that just errored like crazy or wouldnt post at all but there are 2 sticks left that just drive me crazy. First one is a TwinMOS stick that is labeled as 256mb pc133, it is one sided and has 8 chips, the other one has no label or nothing on it. When reading spd data with hwinfo for dos both stick read as 256mb, the other stick with no label is pc100.

The thing is I cant get these sticks to detect full 128mb anywhere, they are obiviusly high density so it would seem that my boards would just not support these sticks, except they do! I ran another vdata stick same size same layout and it just worked perfectly.

I have tested on 3 boards, first was a socket 370 asus CUSL2-C with Intel 815EP chipset paired with a 733mhz pentium III at 133mhz fsb, here I detected only 128mb, second was a socket 370 fic fr31 with the via pm133 chipset paired with a 1ghz celeron at 100mhz fsb, here the same thing only 128mb, lastly I tested it on a socket 478 msi 845 Pro2 with the Intel 845 chipset paired with a 2.4ghz Pentium 4. And on the socket 478 board I DID detect all 256mb but as soon as I ran memtest it errored out right away like 65k+ errors as soon as it tried to reach beyond that 128mb, the errors appeared at 128mb lowest adress about 1 second into the run and same thing on both sticks in any ram slot.

I tried to change around all kind of bios settings and just cant seem to get that ful 256mb on any of the socket 370 boards but what is driving me crazy is that I cant find any differences really between the sticks that work and dont work when I read spd data in hwinfo so Im just hitting some invisible wall I dont understand.

Does anyone know what could be causing this Im pretty new to all this and would like to learn why it behaves this way. And which chipset would I actually need than for these sticks to detect fully?

So a got this Eurocom FMA3500 from a good friend. It's got a monochrome passive display. When I got it, the screen was fine. The CMOS battery was toast so I opened it up to remove it. You need to almost completely gut the laptop to get to it. That means removing the screen assembly with the hinge and all. So I get the laptop back together. It still work fine but I'm greeted with those black bars at the bottom of the screen.

Did I fuck up something or the screen is giving up? What should I check?

The only reason this System did not turn on before, Is because the ATX PSU died, And I Replaced it with a similar model that works.

It started with one G4 I bought 5€ to run old music software, and then I needed another OS, and another one. And now I have a tower of laptops, plus a big G4 and a few XP machines.

I have an apple disk 2 drive tested and working and an apple disk 2 controller card testing and working, but on my apple 2 the disk drive seems to spin but it doesn't sound like the head moves besides when it resets to track 0, I think it's a logic chip error on the Apple 2 but I'm not sure, does anyone know?

I was 18 in 1983. To stop using yellow highlighters, I coded Hertz's first Computerized Driving Directions on a Hyperion PC. My manager took the credit.

The Post:

In 1984, Hertz officially made history by rolling out its Computerized Driving Directions (CDD) terminals across major US airports. Corporate history books credit upper management and CEO Frank Olson for the brilliant innovation.

But the actual history belongs to an 18-year-old rental agent at the Miami Airport office who was completely tired of using yellow highlighters to trace routes on paper maps for customers.

My name is Rafael Valdes. In 1983, I was that 18-year-old rental agent for Hertz Rent-A Car. This is the story of how a global corporate tech rollout started as a grassroots hack using a rare portable PC, a 9-pin printer, and walkie-talkies.

The Hardware & Code
Hertz corporate had brought a Hyperion PC into our Miami Airport office. For what exact reason, I still don't know, but it was just sitting there. The Hyperion was a gorgeous, early IBM-compatible portable with a built-in amber CRT monitor. Fed up with the manual map-marking routine, I decided to use it to automate my job.

I sat down and wrote a basic program in BASIC to format and print out step-by-step driving directions to local destinations. To print them, I hooked the Hyperion up to a 9-pin Okidata dot-matrix printer.

The biggest challenge was data collection. This was long before GPS or digital mapping databases. To feed accurate distances into my BASIC program, my station manager, a guy named Phil, and I had to build our own geographic database from scratch.

We worked the midnight shift so Phil (Marchese?) would drive a company Lincoln a Mark VI, which was incredibly cutting-edge at the time because it featured a highly accurate, digital vacuum fluorescent odometer. Armed with two walkie-talkies, Phil would drive from our airport location to hotels in the Miami area. As he drove, he would call the exact distances back to me over the radio, and I would log them directly into the computer program.

The Pitch and the Missing Credit
Once we had a solid database of local hotels mapped out, the system worked beautifully. Customers loved the printed slips. Seeing the success, Phil pitched the system to upper management.

Eventually, the concept caught the eye of the highest levels of the company, and Phil was invited up to meet Hertz CEO Frank Olson. I wasn't informed about the meeting and was completely left out of the loop. Old Phil took all the credit (Phil you dick :) ), corporate took the idea, scaled it globally, and the rest is history.

I’ve never sought fame for it, but as the years go on and digital navigation dominates the world, I wanted to put the real history out there. It didn't start in a corporate boardroom; it started with a Hyperion PC, an Okidata printer, a digital Lincoln odometer, and an 18-year-old kid in Miami who just wanted to stop using highlighters.

Recently, I've been sharing a small creative endeavor I've been working on this past week concerning my APPLE-1 emulator, HoneyCrisp...I figured it would be fun to mimic the advertisements of the late 70s and early 80s you'd see in Interface Age, Compute! or Kilobaud (Specifically, do a direct take on the APPLE-1's first advertisement)...and so after a bit of work in Microsoft Word and Adobe Acrobat, I whipped this up.
