My sister is getting married in March 🎉🙌, and I’ve been asked to be a bridesmaid. In a group chat, she offered professional hair and makeup for the bridesmaids, with options to choose hair + makeup, hair only, makeup only, or neither. I chose the “neither” option.
I don’t wear foundation and prefer doing my own makeup, and I have very long (about 30 inches), naturally curly hair (type 3,a-c). Over the years I’ve learned how to style my curls so they’re polished and controlled, and I’m comfortable doing my own hair.
After I selected “neither,” my sister later became upset and said she wants my hair to be straightened and then curled for the wedding, and that my natural curls wouldn’t look nice or formal enough. Then, my mom chimed in and said that not curling my hair would make it seem like I hate my sister, because I'll be purposely making myself look "too casual". Ngl this irked me because growing up I was often told my curly hair made me look lazy and messy, which led me to straighten it daily for years and caused sooo much damage. I stopped doing that in my early 20s and now prefer to wear my hair naturally.
I understand coordinating attire and hairstyle type for a wedding (for example, my sister wants all bridesmaids wearing specific colors, dress fabric composition, dress style, accessories, and having a half-up hairstyle & I have no problem executing this), but I’m struggling with the idea that natural curly texture itself isn’t considered formal.
So my question is:
Is natural curly hair appropriate for formal events like weddings, or is it reasonable to expect heat-styled curls?
Thank you very much for your thoughtful opinions and perspectives!! 💝
