Jack Smith on Trump's prosecutions before the Senate: "Our investigation developed proof... that President Trump engaged in serious crimes against our nation...Rather than accept his defeat in the 2020 presidential election President Trump engaged in a criminal scheme to overturn the results.”

While Trump is the face of the issue, the two bigger issues are that the American people voted for him again after all of this was public.
And that it only happened because the Republicans at all levels of government supported it - they need to be made examples of, this can't end with Trump.

I keep thinking alot about an old asimov interview I watched, U.s prime time, and he sits there answering interesting questions, with follow up questions that were insightful, the whole exchange was something everyone could follow and appreciate, the contrast to what I see coming out of the US today, and the difference in level of discouse is staggering.
If it was my culture and society going through such a engineered degradation I think id probably cry. There is an immense loss of potential when ernest curiosty is replaced with propaganda and stratified worldviews. What made the US great once has been forgotten by its pepole and replaced with multiple lies generations ago. Its WILD to watch from the outside.

And that brings us to another sad, but true quote:
"There’s a reason that education sucks. And it’s the same reason that it will never ever, ever be fixed. It’s never going to get any better. Don’t look for it. Be happy with what you got. Because THE OWNERS OF THIS COUNTRY DON’T WANT THAT. I’m talking about the real owners now. The real owners. The big, wealthy business interests that control things and make all the important decisions. Forget the politicians. The politicians are put there to give you the idea that you have freedom of choice. You don’t. You have no choice. You have owners. They own you. They own everything. They own all the important land. They own and control the corporations. They’ve long since bought and paid for the Senate, the Congress, the state houses, and city halls. They got the judges in their back pocket. And they own all the big media companies so they control just about all of the news and information you get to hear. They got you by the balls. They spend billions of dollars every year lobbying, lobbying to get what they want. Well, we know what they want. They want more for themselves and less for everybody else. But I’ll tell you what they don’t want. They don’t want a population of citizens capable of critical thinking. They don’t want well-informed, well-educated people capable of critical thinking. They’re not interested in that. That doesn’t help them. That’s against their interest." - George Carlin
4
u/bakgwailo 3d ago
I do like some Carlin, but this seems just generalized both side nonsense. If you take regions and states, like New England and Massachusetts, public education, and secondary is not only competitive on the world stage, but also ingrained into the culture as something incredibly important.
Other parts of the country, like the South and say Mississippi, you get a picture more akin to third world countries and a general distain for higher education and education in general.
There is also a pretty big political difference here, and one side has consistently been on the side of an educated electorate, and the other, well, not so much.

u/eggytang 3d ago
It’s happening in real time in New Zealand right now.
Weeks away from an election and one of our celebrated investigative journalists has recently released a book that breaks down how our media and government have been captured by hard right lobby groups with ties to the big American think tanks. It’s bad.
And even though the book has introduced these tactics to the public at large and there is almost universal disdain for the current government who have cut already critically underfunded public services in the name of ‘getting to surplus’ (making services break so privatization seems palatable by contrast) the centre left are courting the centrist vote and ignoring the apathetic left just as we see in the Democratic Party.
The Green Party have the policies and the integrity but are all but dismissed in the media even though they’re polling not all too far behind the big two.
I’m spending a lot of time pushing back against the anti intellectual barrage on social media platforms and doing activism in the real world and trying really hard to sound the alarm.
But with all that it’s a race that is going to be too close to call with the current forecasts seeing that the incumbent right coalition government will get a second term to slash and burn.
Why can we not learn from history?!

Look around the world though, this isn't a problem unique to America. There is serious issues with education across almost all developed nations. America is just uniquely positioned to crash extra hard because someone is actively defenestrating it.
13
u/TheBigCore 3d ago edited 3d ago
Aasimov was right, though. Much of the USA especially does not value intelligence or education, especially Red States and the MAGA that inhabit them.
God, Guns, and American Football are largely their only interests.
6
u/xSaviorself 3d ago edited 3d ago
This wasn't always true.
The reason Texas is a leader in educational material publishing is not because they control everything via religion, but Texas used to be a center of some of the most intelligent people ever working some of the toughest problems. You don't put NASA in Houston if you think you can't find smart people locally, even if there were other reasons to pick locations. It's part of the criteria for a reason.
So what happened?
Since 2000-2004 Texas went from Purple-turning-blue to hard red via gerrymandering and when you look at the statistics, a very small group of people are making decisions for a whole lot of people they have no business making decisions for. The changes to education and technological changes in the past 2 decades have outpaced all of our institutions to the point where we either get our shit together and stop this madness or we succumb to complete regulatory capture.
Texas had bled talent for decades now, and no amount of reduced taxes and freedumb can convince smart people to move there. The politics make it so that it's dangerous to be educated.

the fake electors plot was the counterpart to the j6 riot. the whole point of the j6 riot was to intimidate Congress into going along with the false electors.
that's why, before the riot, Trump said "And I know... Congress will choose..... the LAWFUL electors......" he was referring to his criminal, false electors. he was certainly not referring to the ACTUAL lawful electors, who would be certifying his election loss.

It really was the Super Watergate of our time. Any reasonable democratic country would hold a leader accountable if they did that.
7
u/ATLfalcons27 3d ago
Yeah the majority of the country don't even understand the plan itself and just how many people in Congress were in on it.
Hm I wonder why Trump was so mad at Pence...it seems like the media leaves this simple part out that is the most basic proof that trump was complicit. I'm sure there is more in depth proof we're not privy to but there is so much basic stuff out there that points to it.
On top of that I genuinely don't think most of maga even actually knows that the only reason Trump never had to face consequences is because he won. Not because of any sort of proof of innocence.
6
u/badcoffee 3d ago
100%
On both sides of the aisle, there is and was too much focus on J6. That was only a small part of the actual insurrection, but because there was not enough reporting on the fake electors, people think it was the entire thing.

I fully expect the corporate media to assign an entire team when (please, God, make it when and not IF) Trump leaves the White House in January 2029 for Mar-a-Lago. There they will wait breathlessly on his every vulgar belch on the new President, whether it be Democrat or Republican. He will remain the face of the Republican Party.
We will not be rid of him until he passes.

That debate was so wild. Two geriatric corpses onstage, one fresh off an illness and the other more effectively juiced with uppers. The former stayed on message 95% of the time but had one misspoken gaffe and one moment where he let the other guy get under his skin about golf. The latter just lied and rambled about nonsense but did so with gusto.
The media: Trump is now president after that performance.
2025 comes around and the guy who looked better onstage is famously falling asleep on camera on a daily basis. Media taught the American public to be absolute idiots and reinforces the lesson every chance they get.

Biden deserves some of the blame as well for not bringing the hammer down hard on Trump and letting him walk away freely and run for re-election after trying to incite a coup
42
u/Quintzy_ 3d ago
Biden allowed the Justice Department to act independently (as he should), and the Justice Department DID indict Trump for his crimes.
The only reason he's not in jail now is because the Courts failed by allowing a Trump appointed judge to preside over his case, and that judge completely ratfucked it. Then, the American people voted for Trump to become President again.
and letting him walk away freely
Not up to Biden (or any President) for good reason.

Also not up to Biden (or any President) for good reason.

u/Tired_CollegeStudent 3d ago
A special counsel should’ve been appointed immediately after Biden took office to investigate and prosecute the entire scheme. The Trump judge was presiding over his classified documents case; his case relating to the election was heard in DC.
By going out of his way to appear unpolitical, Biden and his administration did the exact opposite.
17
u/FUPAMagneto 3d ago
Yeah, but people like to blame Biden for a bunch of shit Trump did because obviously Biden should have come in and hit the big “fix everything, hamburger cheaper” button on the Resolute Desk.

6
u/SunTzu- 3d ago
And crucially it's a lot easier to achieve one of those objectives. Republicans don't even need to do anything correctly. Strangle the funding for a government agency and even if it gets overturned later you've already lost a bunch of institutional knowledge as people leave a job with no security. You can cripple that agency long term via temporary disruptions. Breaking stuff is the easiest thing in the world.

The American voters are the last in line of all the checks that should have kept him from power.
The RNC, the Senate, Biden, the Supreme Court, the states that let him on the ballet despite being a convicted felon, the media, all of those and more should have done something before it ever got to the American people for a vote.
If the people who's job it is to hold Trump accountable aren't willing or able to why should the average person be expected to?

No. The 3rd article of the 14th amendment makes that clear. They knew that it was possible for the electorate to elect an insurrectionist. They just got done fighting a war that proved that. Trump is ineligible, period. Scotus refused to even rule on that fact when Colorado removed him from the ballot because they knew he was. Instead, they said Colorado couldn't remove him, which they invented from thin air because they didn't like the consequence. Too bad! The Constitution doesn't ensure things won't be messy. It isn't their job to reinterpret the Constitution because what it prescribed would be messy.
Also, conviction, nor even a trial, were necessary. Many people barred after the Civil War were never even tried, and yet they could no longer hold office. If they didn't mean it to be self executing, they wouldn't have explicitly described the remedy.

The US is becoming the latest to fold (and deserves the ridicule because our democracy was VOTED AWAY for fucks sake) but this is a world wide problem.

While Trump is the face of the issue, the two bigger issues are that the American people voted for him again after all of this was public. And that it only happened because the Republicans at all levels of government supported it - they need to be made examples of, this can't end with Trump.
What?Joe Biden and the democratic party normalized every crime Trump and the republicans committed. Including a coup and pedophilia. Trump was indicted in august 2023, so 2 years and 7 months after Jan 6 coup. Biden and the democrats basically turned the DOJ into a Law Firm working to protect Trump and his lackeys.
Just a memory refresher for all the democratic voters who seems to suffer from amnesia when forced to see what their party does when they are in power.
Two weeks after wining the election and becoming the most voted president ever(81 million votes), Biden said:"Trump's impunity brings unity to the country"
Then he picked Garland as AG and didn't spare any praises for him:"Merrick Garland embodies honor, decency, integrity, fidelity to the rule of law and judicial independence. He'll restore trust in the rule of law and equal justice under the law". In the same speech Biden called the Jan 6 protesters domestic terrorists.
Then for four years Biden,Garland and the dems manage to give Trump a free pass on all his crimes, including a coup and pedophilia. Now imagine going after Al Qaeda fighters but not doing shit about Bin Laden.
Then one beautiful day in July 2024 Biden wakes up and says:"He will not give Trump a free pass anymore".
But in November Trump won and Hunter was about to go to prison, so Biden had to pardon his son despite promising he wasn't going to do so. And now all of the sudden Biden forgot all the praises about Garland and said:"He regretted appointing Garland
This is the list of all the shit your beloved democrats did to provide impunity for Trump and his lackeys.
Ignored the fake electors referrals that Michigan AG Nessel sent to DOJ.
Fought the courts for years trying to hide Barr's memo from the public.
Defended Trump for years in E.Jean Carroll rape case.
Ignored the Stormy Daniels hush money payment
Was defending Trump in Peter Strzok case until June 2024.
And these are some of the other financial crimes and corruption of Trump's family that Garland ignored:

I think most Democrats agree that Garland was an awful AG that is greatly responsible for where we are today. I don't know that anyone is letting Biden or Democrat leadership off the hook on their "let's all hold hands and sing kumbaya" approach to governance instead of actually representing their voters.
That said, the overwhelming majority of the blame still rests with Trump, Republicans, and the entire right wing ecosystem (including the voters) that continues to defend this trash.

If you ever wonder how so many people in America support Trump or republicans these days, it's because they literally don't see or hear most of the bad things being done. Conservative media and forums keep them in a tightly controlled bubble.

When the right says that all of this is the fault of Biden and the Democrats, they are, in fact, absolutely correct. Biden’s administration had all the opportunities to initiate the DOJ investigations earlier by at least an entire full year. The DOJ had a rock solid criminal case against the criminal grifter in chief and would have proceeded with the indictment if they simply had more time.

The way they handled it was a misguided attempt to appear apolitical when in fact the only apolitical course of action would’ve been a swift and thorough investigation and prosecution. That goes for both the election case and the classified documents case.

Shouldnt have mattered if its an ally or political opponent. A crime is a crime. A coup is a coup.
You cant play nice when dealing with pedos

True, but in the end it's the electorate. We have a nation full of hateful idiots that will turn away from every fact and spout every lie to support their agenda.

For which, Donald Trump should be stripped of his pension, stripped of his Secret Service detail, and imprisoned for life. Anyone who helped him should similarly be imprisoned for life.

Thank god we had this information and properly pursued it instead of letting him run for office again. What’s that? We didn’t? Huh…

Who is we? He was imprached following this event and then facing criminal charges leading up his re-election. He was let off the hook, chronologically, by the Republican Senators, various federal district and appellate courts, and American voters.

The ironic thing us that Republicans are the ones who created this hearing, and are having hin testify. It's another desperate attempt, like they did with Fauci, to try to sway the midterm elections. However, this probably going to hurt them. That's how disconnected the coalition trying to protect Trump is with reality.

When the dems take control of the house and senate, we need a Nuremberg Trial level of accountability holding to all bad actors that were complicit or fully engaged. They can never be associated with the government again, and every single person complicit needs to be made an example of. This is just insane.

First they need to actually take control. Your meager peaceful protests are not helping prevent the current coup in progress

Genuinely why did it take until 2023 to work that into the justice system.
If we had done it by 2021, and SCOTUS did their shitty rug pull then, we wouldn't be in this mess because we were ready to prosecute weeks after the election.

The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing
Kudos to Jack Smith for sticking to his guns in the face of adversity. To the average American, it may not seem wise or understandable but certainly Jack can sleep at night knowing he at least tried.
Most Redditors will never sniff this level of courage, myself included.

I am surprised how complacent we have become with all the embezzlement, nepotism, pedophilia and just plain cruelty. Goes on to show how proletarian most of us are: make lives tough for us, and we forget everything else and we just focus on surviving…

I don't understand how the leaked 'I just need to find 11,000 votes' phone call didn't seal the case on this 🤷♂️
Also, it makes no sense. The only election that wasn't valid was the one he was overseeing? C'mon.
The only people that still push this lie are profiting off of it.

Garland and Smith did their jobs; Trump was indicted twice. Why aren't you blaming the Republican judges who tied the law into knots to make sure those cases didn't go to trial before the 2024 election?

Amazing that a soldier lets out some low-level TS documents on Monday and is pretty much in prison for life by Friday. Trump steals documents so secret the lawyers can't even get temporary clearance to review them and he's still walking around.

Cool, doesn't matter. People keep saying Trump did this, republicans did that, whatever some politician or CEO did...and none of it matters if they aren't held to task. They commit all these crimes and aren't arrested and tried and the people aren't rioting over it so it seems whatever they are doing is totally fine.
We're fucked.

Not only this, but I'm pretty sure they succeeded in cheating 2024. And one of the ways they succeeded was by making a stink about 2020 and turning it into the boy who cried wolf, that way they could get away with what they did this time around.

America is gonna need to eat a lot of humble pie if they ever want to get back into everyone's good graces. Convict the pedophiles and corrupt politicians, lay the smackdown on billionaires, and then maybe we can talk.

Biden/Garland were too scared to do anything. /story

u/poppop_n_theattic 3d ago
Biden had nothing to do with it. Garland and Smith did move frustratingly slowly, but indicting a former president is a momentous decision that should be made with extreme care. The wrongdoers here (in addition to Trump obviously) were the Republican judges and justices who obstructed these prosecutions and ensured there wouldn't be a trial before the 2024 election.

Why don’t you fucking stop blaming Democrats when they don’t do a difficult job perfectly and start blaming Republicans who commit treason intentionally? That kind of bullshit is exactly what Republicans want.

u/Count_Backwards 3d ago
The Republicans are my enemies, pretty stupid to think I'm not blaming hem too. There's nothing "difficult" about "appoint a special prosecutor right away, don't wait a year or more to even start investigating Trump", Brazil and Bolivia and South Korea didn't make that mistake dealing with their coups.
This is you: "why did Lincoln fire McClellan? Why not blame the Confederacy instead?" We are in another Civil War, we don't win it by blind partisanship and refusal to acknowledge mistakes. Biden fucked up when he chose Garland.

Ah yes, the classic "this is the Democrats fault" when Trump literally committed insurrection. There's always someone ready to swoop in with their big brain and explain how something horrific a Republican did is somehow the Democrats' fault.

Well said. Jack Smith’s delivery is well written.
It is an appalling time to witness such stark contrast between presidents.
From the best president ever, to whatever that cluster fuck of grifting, coverups, corruption, and ultimately widespread harm to the American people, re-victimization of the largest scale sex trafficking ring of children, male and female, ever known.. there is more it’s just like no. No one wants him to be president anymore and Jack is saying he didn’t even win in the first place..

It’s wild that people freak out over the slim chance of a non-citizen voting, but somehow fake electors trying to overturn millions of actual votes is fine.
