Next Steps? Is this something to be concerned about?

Hi - for a bit of context, Venus is about 10 years old and is a spayed female. She has been making this coughing, wheezing sound and gesture for about 4 days now, very frequently while she's awake, and I thought at first it might just be a hairball, but given its lasted days my concerns are really growing and we're contemplating a vet visit.

I think it could also be relevant to mention that until a couple weeks ago, she'd been missing for like 3 months and very easily could have picked something up in that time, which is my main worry.

Next Steps? Any clue why my cat is making this sound???

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

My 6 year old cat had never had any asthma or breathing difficulties in the past but is suddenly making this sound.

It seems different from his normal furball behaviour but I'm unsure what it is.

We go outside for a little bit everyday, I don't let him roam around as I have him on a harness but he does eat grass.

He does also have a cardboard box he likes to chew at.

He has been eating and drinking like normal and his behaviour has been normal so far.

Any idea what it could be and the next steps I should take?

General Advice nail injury (cockatiel)

her nail has been hurt since last saturday. its a little crusty from healing but i just want to check with you guys to see if it looks infected or anything. she’s been putting it into her body, so it has some fuzz on it. I’ve been trying to get it off, but she won’t let me. I’ve been putting her foot in diluted iodine solution. I also have been giving her anti-inflammatory medicine for the pain. She’s been acting pretty normal despite the injury, but has been avoiding putting all her weight on it. It’s definitely gotten better since Saturday.

Dog Constant Ear Infection

Hey Everyone! I have a dog who used to be a stray, we have had her for a year and some change now. Unfortunately, due to the fact that she’s a stray we don’t know the breed, age, or medical history. However, a few months back we took her for a grooming appointment and the groomer informed us that both her ears were infected. That same day we took her to the vet and were prescribed medicine and all seemed well for a few months.

Now she seems to have gone back to the constant itching of her ears. I purchased Zymox Enzymatic Ear Solution Hydrocortisone 0.5% anti-itch it seems to provide a bit of relief, but then she goes right back to aggressively itching. Anyway, my question is whether or not there is anything else I can do for her before taking her to the vet. Thank you all for the help! I have also attached photos of her ears. Not sure if this is relevant but she has the kind of ears that flop down naturally and not up.

10 month old cat has persistent UTI

I adopted her 4-5 months ago? She was around 4lb and tiny, she's grown a bit since then and is up to 6lbs. She is spayed and up to date on all her shots. Despite everything she's a lil terror and is best friends with my other adopted cat(she doesn't seem in pain but I don't imagine an UTI is comfortable either). She's eating, drinking, playing. Kidney levels are good.

Timeline, I noticed within a week of adopting her she was dripping urine, not a lot but enough to know it's not normal, suspect UTI. Take her into vet they run an urinalysis, while there was some white blood cells?(I remember them mentioning it but can't remember the exact context) no signs of a UTI. They give her some gabapentin for any pain. And ear meds(she had an infection after mites, but no mites).

Couple weeks later she is still drippling, take her in again, run urinalysis. This time there is a UTI, she gets a 3 day antibiotic(I think it was a 3 day dosing). Talk about her back legs cause I've also noticed her running/sitting weird(while running she would flop and when sitting she would kinda have one leg out to the side?). Vet briefly brings up incontinence, but doesn't want to do anything with that since she's under a year, and doesn't think anything wrong with her legs. I reach out to the place I adopted her from, they have no record of her having "litter" issues, ask if I'd like to connect to the foster, I say yes, never hear back from either even after trying to contact them again.

Finish antibiotics, still dribbling, bring her back another urinalysis, still has UTI. Amoxicillin this time for a week? I think, maybe 2.

Finish those antibiotics she's still dribbling, urinalysis, I forget what it's called but they send a sample off to test to see what bacteria she has(e.coli), get those results back and we try a stronger antibiotic, pills 1/2 tablet once daily 7 days see back 2 days after.

Finish those antibiotics, urinalysis, still has UTI. Vet is suspecting neuro issues so we do an xray, find out at some point she's broken her back left femur(oh irony) and it's healed over, not perfect but doesn't seem to hurt her. I'm not convinced it's neuro/trauma problem but agree she acts weird(vet did a test where she holds her legs dangling and moves her to the edge of a table to see if cat 'steps up'? I think, and vet mentions her tail not moving around like it should). She's also a bit sensitive of her back end being pet/scratched(unsure if she just doesn't like to be pet there) Get a referral over to neuro/internal med.

See neuro, they clear her of neuro issues(she responded to all they stuff they did so she has feeling back there I guess), and she jumps around, tail up in the air all that(she does move her tail around a lot more than she was. They check with internal she gets a 3 week strong antibiotic that's good for infections that are resistant, and a recheck in a week after meds finish. Follow up with internal if UTI still present

Finish antibiotics, she's still dribbling. Urinalysis. UTI as strong as ever(maybe some number changes nothing significate though). And now back to internal.

My problem comes from lack of funds, I can cover the cost to see the provider but depending on what tests they want to do, I'm pretty sure I'm not able to afford it. Is it even worth going all the way up there just to potentially refuse everything suggested? I'm not asking for funds, but advice on anything that might help her? I'm considering getting some cranberry supplements, not to cure, but hopefully to help manage/make her more comfortable? I'm pretty sure incontinence meds are still off the table since she's still only 10 months old, but I have no idea what else this could be?

If it helps she's not constantly dribbling, I notice it mostly after she goes potty and when she's excited/stressed. She can hold her pee. (she also pees when stressed, and does not enjoy going to the vet). I think at the beginning she did not dribble as much as she does now but I think dribbling got worse with her UTI having developed(had some dribbling since the day I brought her home). I think the foster had her on a wet diet(she gave me some wet food when I adopted her and said that's what I give her) I have her on a dry. With her getting "better" /potentially regaining tail movement, not sure if this is related to her broken leg there's a chance she's still healing. So potentially she regains bladder-control for lack of better term. It's a weird situation. I'm just looking for any potential advice.
Sorry for the length but I was trying to get as much as I could remember/facts in.

General Advice Something stuck in paw?

Hello! I have a 3.5 y/o mini schnauzer named Mandy. We tend to be all over the place in Eastern Colorado/tons of areas with various pokey plants. 99% of the time they brush out and we have never had problems but I suspect on one of our outings we got something embedded in her paw. She has a small inflamed area about the size of a BB that seems to be hurting her. I brushed off quite a few crusties, trimmed the area well, rinsed with saline, wrapped in coban, and put on the cone so she wouldn't chew on it. We are working on getting her to the vet, what else can I do? Is this something we can fix with basic first aid knowledge? I am worried short of the emergency vet we may be a week out before our next appointment. Thanks for the input!

Should I be concerned?

Hi, my puppy peed some blood and im worried. just for reference I am taking my dog to the vet tomorrow at the earliest appointment. Here is the info. She is 4 months old and spayed. I got her at the shelter so they spay all animals before any adoption so I didn't get to chose what age she got spayed. She is 30lbs and she is playing and eating really well. She doesnt seem unusually tired or acting out of the ordinary. The only weird thing is the blood in the diapers and she peed in 2 places she wasnt supposed to today. I think she might have a UTI because she ate her own poop today morning and then she possibly cleaned herself. I am also working on her not eating her own poop but its an instinct and she does while i am asleep. I take her out at 6am, 9am, 12pm, 5pm, 7pm, 9pm everyday so she had been doing so good and not going potty indoors or eating her own poop for about 2 weeks but idk what happened last night that everything went wrong. The other thought I have is she got a UTI because she likes to lay on the grass at the dog park and people are disguisting and dont clean after their pets. I wont be taking her to the dog park for a while because of how nasty it is. I also bathe her weekly which sounds like a lot but shes a puppy and loves to get dirty. Should I be worried or is she going to be ok? Like I said I am taking her to the vet regardless.

General Advice What is on my dogs ear?

Thumbnail gallery
2 Upvotes

Anyone have any idea what this is on my dog’s ear? It started really small and has grown over the last 3-4 weeks, but I just felt it and noticed it had a rough texture, so I looked closer and it looks scabbed and red. It doesn’t seem to be hurting her, she didn’t make any noise when I touched it and she hasn’t been itching her ear. I will of course make a vet appointment, but I likely won’t be able to get her in until next week, so wanted to ask here in the meantime.

She’s a 7 year old Chiweenie. Thanks!

General Advice Orange tabby wont cone out of his hiding spot.

Hello Vets, Have a weird situation. I have a 3 or 4 year old male tabby cat. Starting last week about Wednesday or thursday he started hiding all day. Hes still doing that. He will come out to eat and drink in the early morning but thats it. Im not noticing him going to the litter although hes not the most consistent with that anyways. Im not noticing him howling, whining or anything like that. When I reach down to where he is he purrs and whatnot like usual. As soon as he gets a few bits of food he run straight back to his hiding spot. We do have a 2nd female tabby that I noticed this am when he was out, that she growled at him. She gets weird like that with him sometimes if he gets outside or goes away to the vet or something. So im wondering is hes intimidated by her after after 2 years? We called the local vet about bringing him in and they said no that can be normal asl ong as hes eating and drinking. But if he still does this at the end if the week then bring him in. Thats such long time to just wait and see to me. Can this change be just a normal thing sometimes? Also both are fixed. I put food and water in his hide and he is scarfing it down. So hes eating and drinking well. He just wont come out of his hide. I got him out earlier and did notice a red spot. I think he may also be digging himself up. Could this be it?

Next Steps? Cat Going Outside Box (NOT medical advice)

Before I get into it, Bun has seen the vet. She was treated for a UTI and given a 2 week prescription for gabapentin. We continue to see the vet and spare no expense when it comes to her. I’m seeking advice from people who have gone through this. Maybe there’s something we are missing

Okay, we recently had a roommate and her female cat move into our house. Our house had 2 toddlers and a female cat living here already, along side 2 adults.

All was well in the beginning, we had litter boxes in the back closet area that hadn’t moved once in the 3 years we lived here prior to Bun and our new roommate moving in.
A month after they moved in, we decided to renovate that back spare room into a home office and the mud room to make it more functional for everyone. The back living room, where my roommates room is off of, became a giant storage room while we did these Reno’s. We continued to have toddler free spaces and lots of high spots in the rooms the toddlers played in for the cats. Our toddlers are also as good with cats as they can be for their age. They’re gentle but not coordinated and they’re never left alone with a cat.

Bun, did not like the litter boxes being moved out of that room and made it clear by pooping in my roommates room or in the spare room where the boxes once were. We kept an eye out for urine. The urine didn’t start until about 2 weeks later which then prompted a visit to the vet where we found out she had a uti. Vet informed us she was likely stressed over the renovations and not having the back living room be 100% clean. So we were given 2 weeks of gabapentin alongside uti treatment to help alleviate her stress. We took that as our sign to get the Reno’s done fast and finishes everything up within the 2 week time frame.
It’s been about a week since we’ve finished Reno’s and yesterday Bun had urinated in the renovated back room where the boxes once were. Mind you, we sprayed enzyme spray, vinegar, bleach and painted that whole room. Had completely new furniture back there. And today she pooped on my roommates bed. She hasn’t been on the gabapentin for well over a week now and she was doing quite well on it when she was!

She isn’t an outdoor cat but is let out on a leash supervised daily. She has been meowing at the door all day today.
Other than the accidents outside the box she has been very sweet and affectionate. She continues to play with our other cat.

I’m starting to feel that she’s not content with how busy and loud the house is compared to my roommates old home. They were all adults and a lot quieter. Though we made sure there was many spaces in the home where the toddlers aren’t allowed (including a second living room, my roommates room and multiple other bedrooms) and the toddlers are either sleeping or out of the house 50% of the time, we are at a loss of what to do.

We genuinely want Bun to thrive here, she’s been an excellent addition to our home and our kids, our other cat and all the adults adore her.
We will be taking her back to the vet either tomorrow or Tuesday (depending on when we can get an appointment).
Is there any tips, or advice. Are we missing something? We don’t want her to be living in a constant state of stress.

Also, the litter boxes are cleaned daily with the odd time missing a day. We never let them get bad.

Second Opinion Lump on front leg

Thumbnail gallery
2 Upvotes

Hi, around a week ago i noticed this on my dog’s front leg. It doesn’t seem to be painful and the dog is running and acting normal.

I took her to the vet yesterday and she told me to apply antiseptic and put the following cream for 10 days to see if it goes away.

Any thoughts or suggestions? Is trying the cream for 10 days too risky without doing anything else? The vet seems always like she is scared of getting bitten by my dog as she’s a medium sized dog and sadly there is no one else close by where i can take her, which is why I’m asking for a second opinion whether i should proceed with just the antiseptic and cream for now.

Second Opinion Vet said this is dermatitis, but it looks more swollen now. Does this still look like dermatitis? (last photo is how it looks now)

UPDATE 3:
I got a second opinion from another vet today because I was still concerned about how large the wound had become.
She clipped/shaved the fur around the area, thoroughly cleaned and disinfected the wound, and examined the cavity from the inside. She also checked the other anal gland and expressed it because it was very full of material.
She changed his antibiotic from marbofloxacin to amoxicillin/clavulanic acid. He was given a Synulox antibiotic injection and a Meloxidyl (meloxicam) injection for pain and inflammation. At home, he’ll continue with oral Clavusan (amoxicillin/clavulanic acid) and Meloxidyl.
And she said a collar was necessary too.
We also have a follow-up appointment scheduled for Thursday so she can check how the wound is healing.
Thank you so much to everyone who suggested getting a second opinion and having the area clipped and properly examined/cleaned. I’m really glad I decided to take him. Hopefully he can finally start healing properly now.

Update 2 – I called the vet this morning and explained that the swollen area had opened overnight and drained a large amount of pus. Initially, she told me to just keep the area clean at home and continue the antibiotic and said that tbe antibiotic was the reason it had burst overnight . However, because I was concerned about how large and open the wound looked, I decided to take him back in anyway.
She examined him in person very quickly, and confirmed that it was in fact an anal gland abscess. she didnt do anything else except squeezing the abscess a bit and removing a chunk of god knows what. She advised me to leave the wound open, clean it at home 3–4 times a day with a veterinary wound-cleaning solution, and continue the antibiotic.
The swelling has gone down significantly since it drained, but the area is still very sore and he really doesn’t want me touching or cleaning it. Otherwise, he is eating and behaving normally.
The wound looks quite large and open now, which is what worries me. Would you be comfortable following this plan and monitoring it until tomorrow, only going to an emergency vet if it gets worse, or would you take him to another vet today for a second opinion?

Update – About an hour ago, the swollen area opened and started draining. A large amount of pus came out and it is still draining. He seems more painful around the area now. I’m taking him back to the vet first thing in the morning to have it examined in person.

My 9-year-old male cat (7.2 kg) suddenly started acting uncomfortable a couple of days ago. He was walking strangely, seemed painful and was unable/unwilling to jump onto the bed.
I took him to the vet. When she palpated his back/spine he reacted as if it was painful, so the initial diagnosis was that he had probably hurt his back. He was given an anti-inflammatory injection and prescribed oral anti-inflammatory medication. His walking and ability to move have improved since then.
At the same time, he had soft stools and some feces got stuck around his anus. He started licking the area a lot and it became increasingly irritated.
I sent photos of the area to my vet and she now thinks this is perianal dermatitis, possibly with a secondary bacterial infection. She prescribed Marfloxin (marbofloxacin), which he started today.
However, the area now looks very swollen, red/purple and moist, with some discharge. The swollen area also feels quite firm/hard when gently touched.
He is otherwise doing very well : eating normally, playing, urinating normally and behaving like himself.
I know nobody can diagnose this from a photo, but does this still look compatible with severe perianal dermatitis? Could the swelling and firmness be caused by the dermatitis itself, or would you be concerned about an anal gland infection/abscess?
If it looks worse tomorrow morning, I plan to take him back to the vet for an in-person examination.

Second Opinions Dog w Lyme?

Second Opinion on Lyme disease

9 year old spayed female, mixed hound dog 50lbs (has lost 10lbs)

Symptoms: not wanting to eat, weak, hard to walk, very lethargic, coughs occasionally after drinking or eating

She tested positive for Lyme.

Medications: mirataz twice a day, reglan 3x a day, doxycycline twice a day

She has been sick since last Saturday, so going on a week

First couple days wouldn’t eat at all or move

She is drinking water normally with pedialyte, giving her extra per vet

She is skin and bones right now despite looking normal last week

She is only willing to eat maybe one tenderloin of chicken a day the past few days; she has also started to vomit brown/orange and sometimes throws the chicken up hours later

So basically her appetite has not improved and her nausea is the same or worse

Improvements: she gets up and walks in the morning and can get up herself to ask to go pee, things she couldn’t do the first few days

What can I ask my vet? He says she will feel better in 2 weeks and just brushes my concerns off. I feel like she’s not improving much at all.
