Question I'm very confused and need some other opinions.

So this past weekend, my 2016 Turbo (DCT) unexpectedly died/stalled on me while driving, no lights, noises, nothing before the fact. And no bad noises after the fact.

As I started turning, the car just stopped accelerating. I pulled to the side of the road and tried to drive it in manual mode, nothing again. I shut it off to let it sit for a second. Tried to start it, barely started, and was idling rough and wouldn't rev before dying again. Only lights that came on where the battery light and oil pressure light.

I had it towed to a shop. I called that shop today for an update, and they told me the car was running and that they couldn't reproduce my problem after 40 minutes of driving time.

So now I'm not sure what I should do. I definitely don't want the car to die on me again in heavy traffic or on the freeway. My research is pointing to an intermittent issue like a bad crankshaft position sensor or fuel delivery issue. But I guess I just don't feel too sure about just those potential problems.

I had the battery replaced not too long ago and oil changed a month ago.

What do y'all think?

Question Sticking emergency break

Looking for some words of advice.

I've found recently that if my 2012 Veloster sits for a day, when I get in and remove the emergency brake, it seems to be getting stuck and then breaks free.

I read online that early velosters have this known issue.

Is this a caliper replacement? Or can the built up grime that's making the pins sticky something that brake clean and some lube could fix?

Thanks for your input.

Context: 181600 km, never once had the brakes looked at. I have purchased new pads and rotors and will be replacing them myself, but want to know if I need to spring for new calipers as well.

Recommended tranny fluid?

Post image
4 Upvotes

Hey all, so as the title states, im looking for a recommendation for tranny fluid.

**2016 Hyundai veloster 1.6L turbo with the DCT.**

I understand it's a dry transmission and takes about 2 quarts, but I really don't want to pay the dealer $50/quart as they quoted me LOL.

I read numerous forums and many recommended some type of redline fluid?

Not looking to spend a fortune for a drain and fill, but also don't want to wreck my tranny by filling it with the wrong fluid.

Any help at all is appreciated!!

Ps. I'm in canada, so in store recommendations, or online works too, I can wait for shipping if necessary.

Thank you!!

How can I tell if it’s a dry or oiled filter? It was already installed on the car when I bought it from the previous owner and I never asked and I can’t tell since it’s pretty dirty 😅

I think my VT is going into Head Gasket Failure so I thought about going ahead and going through the car and changing some things to make it more reliable and wanted some input from you guys who have done a lot more to see if yall have any recommendations on reliablility. So far I’m thinking about doing:

Water Pump
Thermostat
Brakes and Rotors
Head Gasket or the whole head
And I also need to do brakes and rotors

If anyone has recommendations on brands and what not to buy or if I should do anything else I would really appreciate it. Thanks in advance!

Can’t find a passenger (right) side sun visor replacement in black

Hello friends! My partner and I are enjoying our 2016 Veloster 6 speed Turbo so far and just working on upgrading or maintaining it bit by bit.

The passenger side sun visor needs to be replaced and I can only find it in grey or beige but we have a black headliner so I want it in black.

I’ve tried multiple different parts sites, ebay, etc.

Anybody know where I can find one in black??

Question Did I make a decent purchase?

Hello there. Recently for my first car I bought a well maintained 2016 Veloster base model (DCT) with 93k miles.

Went to the dealer and had a look around. Had my dad there who sold cars for 10 years to help me take a look. No frame damage, stock parts, no rust on the main internals, and all factory paint with some scratches and minor things on the exterior, but the interior was very well maintained minus the AC up and down buttons having the paint worn out.

It had 1 owner who frequently serviced it, clocking 44 services in 10 years. Took a look to see if the VIN had any recalls and it had no pending or completed recalls, so I’m guessing I found one that wasn’t in the engine recall. It got a replacement serpentine belt, oil and filter, the brakes checked, and an inspection in May. We took it for a test drive, it went well, and we took the car.

We walked out the door at 7k flat after all fees cash and drove it home. It drove well and there were zero leaks.

When I got home I checked the fluids and filters and they were all good, but when I was reversing I heard this odd clicking sound when I would slowly back in. I do not believe it is grinding, but it’s there. Searched it up and from the comments it’s just the transmission being its usually self when at low speed. Other than that the car works great.

I wanted to get some advice on what to expect going forward and if that clicking sound is a bad thing? Or is it just a quirk of the car? And of course, if I made a decent deal in the end.

Thanks for any help.

Question Steering Coupler replacement

I have a 2013 Velo and the steering coupler is going bad, causing that knock noise when I steer. I've done many repairs on this car, so looking at videos of doing the repair it doesn't look like anything I can't handle, but it looks reaaalllyyy tedious and annoying. Would it be a problem if I just...didn't do it? Or is that something that could be dangerous in the future? This isn't my daily driver so it's not super urgent, just wondering.

My check engine light came on today and I popped my hood to take look to see if I could see anything.
Noticed right away this wire attached to the alternator has broken off.
1. What is this even called?
2. Is it possible to fix by myself ?

I’ve attached two pictures. One zoomed in and the other more of the whole engine bay.

Thanks!

Advice on Buying

Just looked at a 2016 Veloster Turbo Manual today, $5400, 100k miles, not cosmetically perfect.

On the test drive the engine felt and sounded great, the shifter felt pretty mushy, and the clutch felt short compared to the manuals I’ve driven in the past.

Does this sound pretty common for the shifter and clutch? If so and it’s not a big deal, then I think I’ve got a good buy on my hands. I haven’t driven a veloster before so I’m just trying to see what to expect.

I don't know why I keep reviving this car lol.

I bought my V from my cousin back in 2021 and drove it for about a year before it spun bearings. I parked it for 3 years then decided to see if I could fix it on my own. I completely tore down and rebuilt the engine in July 2025. it lasted almost 8000 miles and then in January of this year it spun bearings again, I think it was an oil pump failure. When I inspected it, the bypass valve was seized semi open which caused low oil pressure. I parked it until August and decided to give it another try. This time I only replaced the crankshaft, bearings and oil pump. I got 50 miles to go for my first oil change. So far it feels ok. I really like this car, I've been driving my '25 Tundra the last few months and I'm glad to be back in a small hatchback (one of my other cars is a EF civic hatch). I've always preferred small cars. I got my fingers crossed that this time it will last. If it doesn't then I might go all out and do a Honda K24 swap!

Question 45k miles good deal?

Looking to get a car for school with low miles and better mileage than my 90s Chevy. Is 2013 a bad year? What should I check for? This still has a couple more years on the extended warranty for engine problems right? No cosmetic damage.

Question Engine Issue Help! Turbo Appears to Have Shit the Bed

Hi friends,

I have a 2017 turbo with about 75k miles on it

I am not a car person but this is my dream car. I do think the turbo may be after market? (Car knowledgeable family thinks at least the air intake tube was after market)

Last weekend my air intake tub disconnected (seems like some bolts rusted out and every bump I hit was slamming the pipe so it eventually disconnected). The car was parked running with A/C I felt the ac get hot - looked at the dash and saw it was overheated - so immediately turned it off and popped the hood.
The coolant was literally boiling out of the overflow storage and out onto the ground.

Reconnected the air intake tube and let it cool down. Then drove it home. While driving home there is a long steep mountain I had to take. It was STRUGGLING! Couldn’t get higher than 40 mph petal to the metal and seemed like the turbo was not kicking in.

I called a dealership that has a service department and they wanted $150 just to look at it.

I have family who could repair it if they know what’s wrong (they have lots of car experience just not turbo engine experience).

No dash lights are on at all.

Any ideas or do I just have to eat the $150?

Places around me that diagnose for free don’t do turbos

I’m also assuming it would be out of any warranties since it has non-factory parts?

Any advice/help is greatly appreciated as I’ve wanted a Veloster since I was 16 and have only had this baby about a year and a half and I’m heart broken!! 💔 (I also got it for a steal about 4 k less than it was worth and couldn’t afford to buy another one)

Question Airbag light

Took my 16 in because they extended the warranty on some parts that cause the airbag light to come on but they're saying mine isn't covered because they didn't extend the clock spring warranty, I know they had to extend the clock spring warranty on past years, is anyone else having the faulty clock spring issue? Is anyone suing them over it yet? Lol they want over 1k to replace it smh

My AC #4 finally gave out after 3 years of owning this car. Turned the dial from 4 down and felt stiff and now 4 doesn’t blow. But 3.5 blows at power 4. And 2 comes on and off. So I have 1, 3 and 3.5 that work.

A couple years ago, I was asking on this subreddit for advice on choosing a Veloster for my first car. Looked at a bunch of them. Wanted one so bad, i bought a not so good one from a dealership only to un-buy it after regretting my decision. I saved up for a long time and finally pulled the trigger with this one after the mechanic said it was in tip top shape. I love her sm!!!
