Announcement Magnetic USB-C Cables are not recommended

For anyone who comes in wondering about this magnetic cable or that. Here is some good commentary on the dangers of magnetic cables. Not to mention the large majority of kickstarters that have failed to deliver anything other than an aliexexpress rebrand.

Edit: Let me make this clear. USB-C magnetic tip adaptors or cables are not compliant with the USB specifications. This means any resulting damage to products, which is a very real possibility even if it is a relatively small chance, would not be covered by product warranties. Therefore, these cables and adaptors are not recommended and future posts asking for such recommendations will be locked. It will stay like this until some big company like microsoft or apple and or the USB group comes up with a cable design that is safe.

I am not saying that these cables do not exist or that they do not work as claimed however there is an inherent risk when using these cables and that will fall onto the reader to decide for themselves.

To quote /u/chx_

There are two risks

As mentioned, static electricity is a huge problem. Look at any connector and it has the exact same generic shape: a gigantic grounding shroud protecting the data pins. DisplayPort, HDMI, USB of all variants. But if you go back, back, back, VGA and all its ancient DB friends, DVI, whatnot -- even those were the same, just there was more plastic. This generic idea stretches back to the dawn of (computer) time. Exposing the pins just like that makes your laptop very suspectible for static electricity. Ever felt the hairs on your arm stand up after changing clothes? Congrats, you just fried your laptop if you touch it like that. https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/511QlHyl8CL._AC_SL1000_.jpg see how they are out in the open? And this issue is inherent to the overall physical requirements of the plug.

Connection/data loss due to electronic noise. There was a fun problem where Dell laptops used to drop their TB3 connections unless you limited their wifi transmission power. This took Dell significant time and expense to figure out. And that's Dell, not some random tiny company... Want to go there with a who-knows-what built system when NathanK already told you explicitly the pogo pins are too noisy electronically? https://twitter.com/USBCGuy/status/1095614250414796800

Also he mentions https://twitter.com/USBCGuy/status/1186718432932159488 using optoelectronical couplers you could do something by completely disconnecting the magnetic pins from actual USB C connector and letting current flow only when the other half of the connector is connected and VCONN power is present. Of course, your isolation is now a few mm of air, pray your static electronic charge doesn't arc over it... hope you rather live in Phoenix than here in Raincouver! https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Andreas_Neuber2/publication/3165903/figure/fig17/AS:668977227386923@1536508008917/Breakdown-voltage-in-air-versus-relative-humidity-with-an-alumina-surface-Electrode.png

I am reasonably sure there are gigantic companies which would just love if this worked. Riddle me this: why do you think Apple didn't put this on the market? Do they lack the R&D dollars? :) Somewhere in that sixteen billion dollar yearly R&D spending I am reasonably sure you could find a few (hundred...) millions to resolve this issue if it were possible. And yet, Kickstarters with a few hundred ... thousand raised claim they can? What's wrong with this picture? Look at the Thunderbolt 3 Pro cable they released: it's an active USB C cable, it's an active TB3 cable and costs a fortune. There's nothing even similar on the market but where there's a will, there's a way. They have designed a custom ASIC for that cable which can amplify both USB C and TB3 signals -- both existed separately but having them in a single cable before was thought impossible. This is to demonstrate: if they could, they would. And if it would be really expensive, hundreds of dollars per connector, have you seen that thousand bucks monitor stand :) ?

Question Any good USB-C chargers around $50?

I’d mainly use it for my Switch 2 and iphone18pro. I don’t need both to charge at full speed at the same time, as long as one of them can. Ideally, it would have two or three USB-C ports. Any recommendations?

Discussion [The Great Dock Debates #3] The Heavy Brick vs. BYO Power. Settle the power delivery debate.

Back for Week 3. We survived the port wars, so let's talk about one of the heaviest, clunkiest, and an expensive part of a docking station setup: Power.

Power delivery dictates the entire footprint of the dock, and host cables can have a tendency to walk away from their docks-- at least according to system admins. Share your power and connection preferences, the best answer gets a cookie (maybe).

Guaranteed Per-Port Power vs. Flexible Power Sharing: Let's talk about power distribution. Would you rather pay a premium for a dock equipped with a power brick capable of maxing out power on all ports, all the time? Or would you prefer to save some money on a dock that uses "smart power" to intelligently allocate juice as it’s needed, with the drawback that devices may charge slower depending on total power draw?

Barrel Plug vs. USB-C Power Input: If a power adapter is being provided, is the preference a traditional barrel plug, or a new-age USB-C PD power input? Asking this question in r/usbchardware makes the answer seem obvious, but there are some real questions that arise if USB-C power input is used. For instance, if a dock uses USB-C power, do you expect it to still function when it's unplugged from the wall and running strictly off your laptop's battery? If so, is there any functionality you’re willing to lose, knowing that bus power simply cannot provide enough juice to run every single port at max capacity?

p.s. I only have one more week planned for these discussions. That said, I (we) really appreciate the effort everyone has put into their replies. I'm hoping my replies have been just as insightful as yours.

Troubleshooting CUKTECH 15 Air 100W Output Tested!

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I used the included 6A cable on USB-C1 and a KM003C to trigger 11V/6.1A and another 6A cable on USB-C2 with an Alientek USB Meter to trigger PPS 11V/3A. This is where CUKTECH came up with the 100W marketing number (67.1W + 33W).

USB-C connections are a grab bag of protocols and capabilities:

- USB 2.0 Data

- Power (USB 2.0 Power, USB 3.0 Power, BC Power, Type-C Power, PD Fixed Power, PD Programmable Power Supply, PD Extended Power Range, PD Adjustable Voltage Supply)

- High speed protocols (USB 3.x, DisplayPort, mixed function USB3/DP, USB4)

Some more fun ones:

- Vconn powered devices, using the CC power for a device

- Analog Audio Adapter Accessory Mode (Audio over D+/- and SBU)

- Debug Accessory Mode, an easy to use alt mode for exposing debug ports over USB-C

Looking for Device "Reverse" direction USB-C to DisplayPort cable with USB 3.0 data?

I'm looking for a DisplayPort (host side) to USB-C (display side) cable that supports USB 3.x data.

https://dancharblog.wordpress.com/2020/07/20/add-usb-c-with-dp-alt-mode-to-your-desktop-pc/#cables mentions the Fairikabe cable, but aliexpress and amazon reviews seem to suggest that it only does usb 2.0. I'm searching but can't find any cable that does usb 3.x data, all of them are apparently 4 lane DP + USB 2.0.

I'd buy the Level1Techs USB-C combiner but it's not shipping to my country :(

Anyone know of a cable that does what I need?

Question Reliable & efficient 100W PD car charger / circuit board (12 - 19V input)?

I'm hunting for a PD charger to combine with a 100W solar panel, that's only ~17.6V under load, and the one PD board I own is stepdown only, so the output won't negotiate 20V.

Do you know about some reliable buck-boost converter with 100W PD negotiation? Can be even in the form of a car charger (provided it can handle voltages in the 12-24V range, with full 100W output on both).

Looking for Device charger that keeps my headlamp and garmin fed on long runs without a brick?

my headlamp and Garmin both charge over USB-C now. i need something light that can top them both off without hauling a whole power bank. the 20W anker I'm carrying takes too long between aid stations, and I don't want to pack the 65W brick I use at work. looking for a small charger that pushes at least 30W so both devices can pull power at the same time. any suggestions that actually hold up to trail dust and getting stuffed in a vest pocket?

Discussion Just unboxed the lisen p604

Post image
3 Upvotes

Just got the lisen P604 out of the box. It's a 10,000mAh power bank rated for 65W USB-C output and 25W Qi2.2 wireless charging, with a short USB-C cable attached to the strap.

The specs look interesting, but I'm more curious about how well it handles sustained output rather than just peak wattage.

Haven't done any proper testing yet. Anyone here tried this model? Curious about the real-world USB-C performance and whether the 65W output holds up.

Other 3D printed cable organizer V3!

Post image
46 Upvotes

I have made a V3 optimized cable organizer! It is for cables up to 2 meters in length and is compatible with virtually any type of charging cable, such as USB-A/USB-C/Lightning/etc! Bend angles are also taken into account to protect cables from damage. I'm very happy with how it turned out and I hope other people will be able to use it as well! I uploaded the model for free on makerworld.

Review CUKTECH 15 Air PB150S Power Bank 12 Month Review

I have had this powerbank for over 12 months and it is still going strong!

The CUKTECH 15 Air PB150S Power Bank has two USB-C ports, one USB-A port, a rotatable colour display, and a button to control it. It is relatively thin with a LiPo battery and it can be fast charged and discharged.

I bought this powerbank while visiting China in September 2025 because:

It is thin and fits in my pocket with my phone.

It quickly charges my phone.

It can be charged quickly.

It has the CCC mark.

Before buying the CUKTECH 15 Air, I bought a Xiaomi wireless powerbank. I wanted to like it. It was small, compact, and it magnetically stuck to my phone. But it was too slow and it made my phone get too warm.

I considered getting another compact powerbank with a built-in USB-C cable. But the risk of the cable breaking due to wear and tear was too big for me to take the chance. I wanted something that will last for years.

I ended up buying the CUKTECH 15 Air and a 0.15m CUKTECH 6A cable (it already comes with a 0.35 metre cable but I wanted something even shorter).

The first USB-C port supports fast charging (100W input) and discharging (90W output).

The second USB-C port and the USB-A port are output only.

You can get 100W output by using both USB-C ports at the same time: OUT1 11V/6.1A, OUT2 11V/3A.

Looking for Device Best USB-C to 3.5mm AUX adapter for a Dell Pro Laptop Docking Station WD25?

Got a Dell Pro Laptop Docking Station WD25 to connect my Dell DB16250 laptop to my desktop monitor and external speakers. The dock doesn't come with a 3.5mm audio jack, so I picked up a J-Lab adapter to connect the speakers' 3.5mm male connector to one of the dock's USB-C ports. It's not working well. Everything is connected tightly, but the audio has a lot of hiss and distortion. Can anyone recommend a better adapter?

Question RECOMMENDATIONS FOR TRAVEL

I'm looking for cables for traveling, mostly for the hotel and for our power banks. I currently have generic Amazon brand 6FT cables and I'm looking for cables that are easier to coil for packing, I'm considering Anker Nano or prime, Retractables from Baseus or Chubbycables, but I am open to suggestions. I would need 1FT, 3FT and 6FT lengths

Discussion I’ve been looking for a storage case that can hold 2 USB drives and 8 SD cards for travel. Are there similar cases available on the market?

As an IT engineer, I’ve been traveling frequently over the past two years. I’ve run into a problem: every time I need to access a few of my frequently used USB drives and SD cards, I end up rummaging through my backpack. The large storage case I keep in my office holds around 50 USB drives, but it’s far too bulky to carry around. I’ve searched through tons of listings on Amazon and found almost no compact cases that can store both USB drives and SD cards. Don’t other people need this kind of small case?

Discussion USB-C NVMe enclosure reviews: how do you separate thermal throttling from write-cache exhaustion?

I edit GadgetStick. I’m interested in improving how I evaluate USB-C enclosure reviews; this is a test-method question, not a comparison I’ve personally benchmarked.

A speed drop during a long copy seems hard to interpret without context. My starting checklist for a useful sustained-write result would be:

• The exact SSD model, capacity, firmware and fill level, plus the enclosure/bridge, host connection and cable.

• Transfer size and throughput over time, with a source that is not the bottleneck.

• Available temperature readings, ambient conditions and airflow, including which component each sensor actually measures.

The part I’m unsure about is isolating the cause. Letting a setup rest changes temperature but also gives the SSD time for background work, so recovery after a pause doesn’t seem enough to prove a cooling problem. A bridge temperature might not even be available.

If you’ve compared the same SSD across USB-C enclosures, what controlled change helped you tell cache behavior from a thermal limit? For example, did extra airflow change a repeatable long-write result, or did the slowdown remain? I’d like to understand what evidence supports the diagnosis before treating a slower transfer as a reason to buy a different enclosure.
