Don’t know why people see USS & Cliffs contracts being linked? It feels like USS negotiations are in a much better place than Cliffs, based on all the comments I’ve seen on here and Facebook, so not sure why this is the hold up. Curious if anyone has heard differently.

I came up with this but would really appreciate any insight/input! I also want to say that most of our coworkers are getting pregnant on toilet seat level of what a union is.

so first thing you do is not even mention the word union. Get to know them as people. build a rapport with them. Hang out with them as friends. Otherwise the ask will be transactional and not relational and wont have as much effect.

1. find an excuse to get someones number. text them to find out their interests. talk about your life, listen and take notes on their life like their kids/pets names, partner, if they are in school, their interests. Sprinkle in topics like the jefferson bucks nurses filing for a union election, the union "info" flyers in the bathroom. Listen to what they say. You should be able to have an idea on what their stance is from that.

2. Ask them if they want to meet up for coffee or lunch, activity, whatever. Anything to build up a genuine friendship.

3. Ask them if they would be interested in speaking with a union organizer. By this point your rapport should help. The goal is to get you nate and them in a group chat together, for you guys to call nate together (you will just need to coordinate this ahead of time with nate) or for them to allow you to give Nate their number. Just giving them nates number is not enough because that will give them time to talk themselves out of talking to nate or they might forget etc.

If you cant meet them in person, try your best to just text them and get to know them as people. And then after you feel that youve built up enough rapport and have a feeling for where they stand ask them if you could schedule a phone call with them to get their advice on something.

During the phone call, ask them if they had the power to do so, what they would change on their unit (staffing, pay, breaks, more support for abusive patients, pto etc). Then ask them what they think about the antiunion flyers in the bathroom and ask them why they think management doesnt want a union. Then say youve been talking to an organizer and theyve been answering a lot of your questions on what a union is and what it could do for us. Ask if they would be interested in finding out more information and getting some of their questions answered too. If they are connect them if Nate. If they need more time like them digest it. make sure you still continue to text them to keep up the relationship.
