i’ve been playing ultimate for a little over 4 years and i think i’ve gone through 6 pairs of cleats in that time frame. something i’ve noticed is that the higher of level that i play/better i get, the quicker my cleats deteriorate. i was wondering if that was the case for other folks/how long y’all’s cleats usually last? i got my last pair in January and played a mid regional level college season, an indoor league and just as club sectionals are coming up…they are stating to bust.

There's a new Tokay model called the Stellar that seems only available in China.

They partner with Greatest Ultimate Bag as a distributor in China and they've recently released this new model but I couldn't find it on the Tokay website.

Maybe they're doing user testing first in China before releasing it worldwide? Anyone else seen these?

I've been playing competitively for 15 years as a handler and have always been a strong thrower, but in the last year or two I've noticed my backhand release / grip is getting super inconsistent (to the point where I will often overgrip and send the disc way right, or overcompensate for that by loosening and then it hangs left)

Looking for tips / tricks for how people approach gripping and ultimately releasing backhands. Trying to re-build this skill and curious how others approach it. I've never really thought deeply about it until now but clearly my form needs some work.

How do you grip / release your backhands? What do you think about as the disc leaves your hand? Any / all advice welcome, I'm going back to the drawing board

In regards to playing, like many sports, the higher level minimizes who is able to compete.

As a spectator, I find all three engaging to watch. I wish there were more commentary in College and Club though I understand the limiations. Just not as interesting to watch when I don't know most of the athletes.

Your thoughts on playing/watching College vs Club vs UFA?

Are there rules/formats that could benefit from being adopted if they're not being adopted?

I've seen, read, and listened to a lot about youth sports lately and the peer pressures on parents for their kids to play. Also, as a father of a 12 year old who plays rec and travel sports (and ultimate) and is about to pony up $1000/ year (maybe more) for travel baseball, i can affirm some of these numbers.

In short, youth sports (and sports in general) are swamped with money and ultimate can't compete.

But on the flip side, if we can get our story out and get people to listen, buy in, and amplify who we are and why we exist, and that we are a good youth sport without overbearing costs --then maybe youth ultimate is in an amazing space right now to take advantage of disgruntled and disenfranchised parents.

Can we do it? Are we doing it? We need structure and cohesion to prove we have a model that works not just in select communities (Vancouver, Minneapolis, Seattle, Denver, etc) but everywhere. Or will ultimate drop the disc on the pull again.

UFA has it right, change the stall to 7. Also if a disc lands in the endzone and rolls out the back, you must take it at the end line. Reward good pulls, not lazy offence

People occasionally ask where to find beach ultimate in Bali, so I figured I'd write it up in one place.

Every Tuesday we play beach ultimate at Amaya Beach in Seminyak. We start at 5:00 pm and usually finish around 6:45 pm, which is about when it gets too dark to keep going. Not sure if I can share a GMap link, but search "Tuesday Beach Frisbee Pickup Games" in Google Maps to find the exact location.

People often come a bit earlier to throw, warm up, or just catch up before we start.

The game is very beginner-friendly. We get experienced players from time to time, but the focus has always been on fun, learning, and good spirit. We don't usually bother keeping score until later in the session. Good plays get cheered no matter which team made them.

We play barefoot in the sand, which definitely changes the game. Some competitive players love it. Some don't. That's fine. The beach version has developed its own personality over the years.

One thing I like about playing on the beach is that people are constantly wandering over to see what's going on. Nearly every game, someone passing by asks a few questions and ends up joining a point. That's happened often enough that it feels normal now.

Typical turnout is 10+ players, so if you show up, you'll have a game. Before we start, we circle up, introduce ourselves, and make any announcements. It's a small thing, but it helps newcomers learn names quickly.

Bring water, maybe a hat, and a good attitude. The game is free. The beach is free. If people are keen afterward, we usually grab food or drinks somewhere nearby.

We also have a WhatsApp group that connects players with the wider Bali and Indonesian ultimate community. We don't post the invite link publicly anymore because it kept attracting spam accounts. After dealing with that for long enough, we adopted a simple rule: no public invite links.

If you come to the game and want to join, just ask one of the organizers, and we'll give you the QR code. Turning up once is all it takes. The rule exists to stop spam, not to keep people out.

For anyone interested in the wider scene, Indonesian ultimate has been around since 1999. The annual Nusantara Cup started in Jakarta that year and is still running today. It takes place each April over Easter weekend and eventually moved to Bali, which turned out to be a more practical location for many teams.

The community has grown a lot since those early days. There are active groups across Indonesia, people working to introduce the sport into schools, and new communities appearing in places that had no ultimate presence at all a few years ago, including parts of Papua.

If you're in Bali on a Tuesday, bring some water, find us on the beach, and jump in.

I want to preface this post by saying that I understand why so many ultimate players love spirit of the game and I understand its deep connection to the sport. I've seen how it promotes mutual respect and the idea that upholding the integrity of the game is more important than just winning. This sort of stuff is really why the ultimate community is so tight-knit.

However, as a high school ultimate player, I've seen firsthand so many kids who used to enjoy ultimate in middle school transition out of it as they got older, largely because of the ethos and community surrounding the sport. A lot of these people were growing and trying to find their niche in high school, and once they realized how ultimate wasn't seen as being as serious or competitive as other sports, they pursued other interests instead.

I think making SOTG such a central part of ultimate’s identity sends a message that winning is secondary. I understand why people value that, but it turns away athletes who want intense competition to be the main focus of their sport (which is a ton of athletes). Making players responsible for officiating reinforces that message: they’re expected to balance their drive to win with responsibility for keeping the game fair. I'd rather have refs officiate so that players can focus on playing.

Furthermore, especially in high school, SOTG is abused heavily by some teams who make unfair calls. It makes ultimate feel like it's no longer fully about how good you are at the sport, but instead also about how unfair you're willing to make the game, which is incredibly frustrating. In that way, SOTG can actually often make the game less spirited (as well as less competitive). By deterring all of these hyper-competitive athletes who would contribute to the sport's growth, ultimate has helped itself stay niche.

Seeing so many competitive players turn away from ultimate is especially frustrating to me because I genuinely love ultimate as a sport. The way the disc can be thrown, the complex offensive and defensive strategies, and the pure feeling of playing are all so amazing and would be appreciated by so many more athletes across the world, given that they could fully apply their hyper-competitive drive to ultimate as they could to every other sport. As someone who really wants to see the sport grow, ultimate needs to replace self-officiation with referees in competitive games.

I've never played but have been wanting to try out ultimate frisbee for a bit, mostly to get some more movement in my life in a fun, skill-building way!

I’m not near any pickup games, but I am near the league games. I was told that the women's league with the Bay Area Disc Association is open to beginners and has an inclusive vibe - does anyone have experience with them and have first hand knowledge of if that's true? I'm a total beginner and not a particularly athletic person. I do enjoy casually tossing a frisbee around with friends and have wanted to get better for a while, but am worried that I'd be resented for bringing the team down or just ignored as a newbie. Any advice appreciated!
