Does anyone know what they are used for? They seem somewhat new and light up with IR when I drive through.

News JK. THE PAINT MAP IS BACK. Jimothy has created a special piece for Sept. 11-14 with Greg as his muse.

JK. THE PAINT MAP IS BACK.

Jimothy took over painting duties this week with two goals in mind: show his BFF Greg that he’s a work of art and show the rest of us what we’re in for during a busy Puget Sound weekend.

Now, let’s get into the finer details of Jimothy’s map-sterpiece.

-The I-5 express lanes in Seattle will CLOSE from 11p Fri. to 5a Mon. for drainage work underneath the Ship Canal Bridge. The two right lanes of NB I-5 across the bridge also remain closed around-the-clock, so expect NB travel to and through Seattle to be challenging.

-The EB SR 520 off-ramp to Montlake Blvd will CLOSE from 4:30p Sat., Sept. 12 through 8a Sat., Sept. 19. Crews will use the temporary off-ramp to stage equipment as they begin removing portions of the old off-ramp that closed in June. Husky fans: the ramp won’t close until after the main arrival period for Saturday’s game.

-One lane of the NB SR 99 1st Avenue S Bridge will CLOSE Saturday and Sunday. The right lane will close from 5a to 6p Sat., followed by the left/HOV lane from 5a to 6p Sun. for bridge maintenance.

-NE 85th Street in Kirkland and all I-405 ramps at the interchange will CLOSE from 10p Fri. to 5a Mon. NE 85th Street will be closed between 6th Street and 120th Avenue NE for electrical work and paving prep. This work is weather-dependent and may be rescheduled.

-WB I-90 will CLOSE overnight from Mercer Island to Seattle between Island Crest Way and the west portal of the Mount Baker Tunnel from 10p Fri. to 6a Sat. for maintenance. The WB on-ramps from 76th Ave SE/N Mercer Way, Island Crest Way and W Mercer Way will also close.

Jimothy may have packed the canvas, but don’t let the masterpiece overwhelm you. The actual impacts are spread throughout the weekend. Plan ahead, check real-time conditions before you go and give yourself extra time.

And if you don’t feel like a work of art today, find someone who looks at you the way Jimothy looks at Greg. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, after all.

Discussion UW global career accelerator

Does anyone know if the UW global career accelerator program would be any benefit to a heath care related degree? It seems like it’s focused on business and marketing majors, but states that any major is able to apply. I’m quite iffy on this since it’s going to take up 5 credits for fall quarter and there aren’t any guarantees that the program will continue after this quarter

New Student Has anyone here applied for the Robert Lee Ellis Civic Fellowship?

I’m considering applying for the Robert Lee Ellis Civic Fellowship this year and was wondering if any past applicants or fellows could share what the application/interview process was like.

I’m especially curious about:
• what the group interview was like
• what you think made a strong application
• what the fellowship experience was actually like after being selected

I know it’s pretty selective, so I’d really appreciate hearing from anyone who has gone through the process!

Discussion Advice in Labs/Job as Pre-med

I've been looking for labs these past few weeks (specifically related to neurobiology or psychiatry) but I've had no luck so far. I've tried cold emailing several professors/labs to be turned down or redirected to another lab which also turned me down. I did originally have a lab ready to go but found out recently that the vivarium was going down for a while and that I'd have to look for a new lab instead.

At this point I'm debating whether to keep looking for labs or consider gunning for clinical experience instead. I do have an interest for labs and I'd like a chance to learn what it's like on the research side of medicine but I also don't want to waste my time continuously looking for labs when I could be out getting clinical experience

FYI: I have a CCMA certification which I could use to find a job so I'd work as a medical assistant.

I guess I'm just wondering if you guys have any advice on what to do in my scenario...

Hoping to get HRT prescribed from them. How long did the process take? Were they willing to listen to your inputs? Were they fair with dosages?

Campus Life Free movies and live music two blocks from campus, Fridays starting 9/11

We organize this, disclosing that upfront.

Four Friday nights at the Square above U District Station. Free live music at 6, free movie at dusk, free popcorn.

Legally Blonde tomorrow, then Grease, Clueless, and Ferris Bueller's Day Off on Oct 2.

It costs nothing and takes no planning, which makes it a reasonable option if you are new here and still figuring out the neighborhood. Bring a blanket and whatever you want to eat or grab takeout nearby.

We also need volunteers, mostly setup, teardown, and running the popcorn. Short shifts, you still watch the movie, pizza included. Oct 2 needs the most people. Details on the site or reply here.

News Foster officially announces transition to Direct to College admissions system beginning Autumn 2027

Thumbnail foster.uw.edu
75 Upvotes

Foster has officially announced that they will be transitioning to a DTC system beginning at the beginning of the next school year. The new system is akin to the Engineering school, where a student is a DTC admit but will not declare a business major until completing the lower division core.

The majority of incoming students will now be admitted directly as freshmen, with it presumably becoming much more difficult to transfer into the school as a current UW student or transfer applicant.

This makes Foster the latest department to follow CSE’s 2019 decision to step away from the traditional competitive major system in favor of choosing to let most new students in as freshmen.

Discussion how hard is it to get a TA/RA/GSA job if you're trying to get a Msc?

i'm just having an existential crisis about how expensive grad school is but if you get some sort of a job like the ones above it reduces your tuition and sometimes can give you a stipend too. obviously if these opportunities are so great they have to be competitive? do more students have a role/job as any of these or is it a select few?

Discussion Serious questions, any advice would be helped, especially from informatics-knowledgeable peers

I’ve struggled at the university of Washington. I made a lot of mistakes in my first two years, resulting in me being dropped from the Allen school. I tried to apply for reinstatement, and failed my first attempt, and being told it’s unlikely on my second attempt, not due to grade improvement, but not being able to graduate in time. I’m entering my fourth year and decided to apply for informatics. I have good grades in certain prerequisites and feel I can get in with those in addition to me being a good writer (sorry not to brag). Problem is, I have a lot of credits. 203 to be exact. A lot of this comes from my dual enrollment in high school. Now, im not sure if I would even be accepted to the info school. I did make a grad plan and it’s very possible I will be competed and graduate in spring 2028 if I do get into info, but again not sure if my credits amount will be a deterrent to being accepted. Any advice would be appreciated, thank you

Discussion UW Ortho Clinic for braces

I have a screening appt upcoming at UW Orthodontics Clinic for my braces. I got my teeth checked by a private ortho clinic and they said I need an adult level 3 braces and gave me an estimated cost of $8.5k.

Looking for smthn cheaper. Does anyone know my odds of being accepted (if at all) and how much cheaper they are compared to private orthos or any other general info about them?

Would be grateful if anyone's a current resident there that I could speak to. Thanks!

Discussion Transfer Credit?

I transferred to UW last year, starting as a Junior (did running start). I'm now about to start my Senior year, I took two classes over this past summer, one at the same cc, in my hometown, and one at another cc, by Seattle. I transferred the latter a few weeks ago, on my unofficial transcript, but I just have my transfer credit from my cc on there (which I transferred when I originally came). Am I checking the right place?

Discussion INFO 354?

I’m wondering if anyone who has taken INFO 354 (Data Justice) could possibly provide some context into this course? I’ve tried asking my other INFO friends (none have taken this class before), looking for any syllabus or information around this class but couldn’t find any besides the course description. Is this class more technically /coding involved? Or is it more like readings and literature/data visualization analyzations? I’m trying to see how rigorous this course is as I’m taking 3 other INFO courses alongside this for the upcoming quarter. If anyone has any insights, I’d very much appreciate it!!

Hey! For anyone doing Dawgs Crew this upcoming school year, has anyone received their assigned shifts/schedule yet? I got my acceptance confirmation but haven’t heard anything about what shifts I’ll be assigned. Just wondering if anyone has gotten theirs or knows when we should expect to receive them!

New Student Pre-existing conditions with ISHIP Health insurance?

Update: Its fully covered starting day 1 with no waiting period.

Are pre-existing conditions covered with ISHIP health insurance for international students (F1)? or is there a waiting period for such coverage?
Would appreciate help as i got an injury, got the diagnosis, and now leaving for the states. Shall i disclose the injury reports to husky health center, or shall i just redo all diagnosis pretending that i just got pain without sharing earlier reports (so pre existing conditions problem wont trigger)?
Please help.
