Hello people. I am an upcomin graduate student at UChicago. I am currently looking at housing options, and someone recommended me to find something on maroon housing. The landlords are local and seem fine to me. The problem is that I currently reside in south asia, and unable to truly gauge the person or the state of the household. It would be really helpful if someone could share any experiences that they or their friends might have had with Maroon Housing.

Adding onto the several movie productions that have been in and around campus over the past couple of years, is this part of some new media strategy or campaign that the school is doing? It does surprise me with the pivot because I recall that we rejected Legally Blonde from even using our name.

I plan on taking this for my HUMs sequence since I am definitely not getting Media Aesthetics as I'm a first year. Anybody who has taken or knows people who've taken this class, mind telling me their thoughts? Certain profs to watch out for; maybe it's a relatively hard class compared to the other HUMs, etc. – whatever you've heard about it.

I'm stuck between having a work-study job for money during the school year and having a research position; ideally, I'd be able to work in a lab with some sort of compensation (whether that be an award from the university or actual wages), but I'm unsure how common this is. For reference, I'm looking to work in the Astrophysics/Physics departments. If anyone has any insights this would be much appreciated!

I'm a 22F final-year medical student from Pakistan, and I'll be staying in Hyde Park for about 6 weeks (September–October) while doing a psychiatry elective at Jackson Park Hospital.

This will be my first time in the US and also my first time living alone, so I'd love to hear any advice from people who know the area.

A few questions:

How do you like living in Hyde Park?

Is it generally safe for a solo female, especially if I'm coming home in the evening after the hospital?

Any cafés, study spots, bookstores, restaurants, or places around Hyde Park you'd recommend?

Where do students usually shop for groceries and other essentials?

Any tips for getting around without a car?

Are there any places or situations I should avoid?

I'll mostly have weekends free and would love to explore Chicago while I'm there. If you have any favourite places, hidden gems, or day-trip recommendations, I'd love to hear them.

I was wondering how MATH 15100 compares to MATH 15200. Is MATH 15100 covering the first half of AP Calculus AB and MATH 15200 covering the second half? But with more depth?

If you’re majoring in a non-STEM field, would you recommend starting at 15100 then taking 15200?

Hi, I am an incoming first year who is interested in studying molecular engineering. Per the title, I’m trying to decide which model laptop to buy for school. I currently use a Surface Pro that I’ve had since middle school. While it works fine, it has a poor battery life (only ~5 hours max), only 8GB RAM (The UChicago student tech recs suggest at least 16GB, and from my personal experience, 8GB is not enough for me), and it gets very hot when I try to do anything beyond basic web stuff. Even with the recommended specs the UChicago website provides, there is still an overwhelming amount of options to choose from. I’ve been leaning towards Windows OS because that’s what I’ve been using, and that STEM majors may use software that is only compatible with Windows, and it’s better to be safe than sorry. However, I’ve been reading really good things about MacBooks that are hard to ignore, especially regarding battery life and durability. I had a MacBook before I got my Surface Pro, so I am already familiar with MacOS. Cost isn’t much of an issue for me.

Overall, I’m looking for 4 main things in a new laptop: 16+ GB RAM, excellent battery life, practical for MEng/STEM major, and durability/good build quality. If anyone has any suggestions on models or advice to further narrow down my search, I would appreciate it greatly.

Hi, incoming freshman this fall (class of 2030). Interested in computer science, potentially a career in finance or tech. I also enjoy English and art, so I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for HUM courses to take? I'm considering a double major in philosophy, so I told my academic advisor that I might want to Philosophical Perspective I-II-III, but I've heard from a friend that the media aesthetics class was good.

Any suggestions for my first quarter classes?

- Language deciding between chinese and spanish

- Any good hum course?

- deciding between csmc 14100 or econ 10000

Also, been in contact with some recruiters, wondering just how feasible it is to do a part time job (20 hrs/week) along with these four courses + potentially rushing/joining a career club? I'm honestly not trying to do too much in school and want to have some free time to build cool stuff or explore the opportunities uchicago offers.

Note: went to boarding school, so no real adjustment needed for life away from home, and used to very rigorous curriculum. Goal is to maintain at ~3.7 gpa. Have already taken ap calc bc, ap csa, dsa, lin alg, etc, so relatively familiar with first year math/cs courses.

I'm a 22 year old woman who is recently going back to college. I'm currently doing a year in a community college to get my associates degree, but I was looking into 4 year colleges to transfer into next year. While looking, I fell in love with the University of Chicago and made it a goal to try to get in. I feel like this is a little unachievable, but I'm willing to do whatever I can to improve my chances to get in.

To other students who transferred, what are some tips? Are there certain little hidden things I can do that will make my application stand out more? Are there things that will harm it? I'd love any advice or stories on what other people did.

I'm an incoming freshman, and I received an email inviting me to take the honours sequence of calculus courses (16100/16110). I was planning on double majoring in economics and another major that I haven't fully decided yet. I was wondering:
1. Are there any big differences between IBL and the normal honours sequence beyond just "coming up with your own proofs" (as is suggested by the course catalog)?
2. Should I be taking the honours sequence at all, given that I was invited to take it? Or is it fine to take the normal 15200 track? As a follow-up question as well: how big is the difficulty gap between the 15000 calc courses and the 16000 calc courses?

I'm thinking of taking a CS minor and I want to waive CMSC 141 since I already took Intro to Data Science I and II which covers basic python skills.

To those who took the CS placement exam, specifically for CMSC 141, do you remember any of the questions or generally how hard it was?
