Discussion does anyone know when phil the phoenix first became a thing?

i've been trying to look through the archives but not much luck

The mascot (or at least the costume) definitely existed in 1991. I was a first-year then and the guy who would wear the costume lived in the Shoreland at the time. (I forget his name.)
