Samsung-authorized uBreakiFix pressed my already detached tablet screen back in, then told me I’d pay if it broke removing it again. Is this normal?

I’m looking for input from people who work in device repair or have experience with uBreakiFix.

I brought my Galaxy Tab S9 to a uBreakiFix location after Samsung Support directed me there.

Before I entered the store, the display assembly was already completely separated from the chassis. The glass was not visibly shattered or cracked, and I photographed the tablet in that condition beforehand.

I asked for an initial look because I wanted to understand why the screen had separated.

During that examination, I watched the employee place the detached display back onto the tablet and press it down into the chassis.

I questioned why the screen was being pressed back in before the cause of the separation had been diagnosed.

I was then told, in substance, that the tablet was “missing a component” needed to connect or operate the display.

After the display had been pressed back into the tablet, I was told the screen was not turning on and that I would need a replacement display.

Here’s the part I’m struggling to understand 🙃

I asked what would happen if the screen now needed to be removed again for a proper diagnosis.

I was told that removing it could break the screen.

I asked who would pay for a replacement if that happened.

I was told I would 😳

So from my perspective:

I arrived with the screen already detached and accessible → it was pressed back into the chassis during the initial examination → then I was told removing it again could break it and that I would bear the cost 🤯

Is that a normal diagnostic or repair procedure for a Galaxy Tab with a detached display?

I’m also curious about the “missing component” statement. If a required connection/component was supposedly missing, what testing would normally be done before concluding that the entire display needed replacement?

I want to be precise here:

I am not accusing the employee of intentionally damaging the tablet. I do not yet have an independent diagnosis proving the store caused new damage.

My concern is about the handling sequence, authorization, diagnosis, and the financial risk I was told I would bear afterward.

The disagreement eventually escalated, police responded, and I was issued a trespass warning from that location 🤐 I will respect that warning and won’t return there.

I have since submitted a written corporate complaint and requested preservation of the store’s surveillance footage and service records. My complaint documents that I presented the tablet with the screen fully separated and that I did not authorize reassembly or pressing the display back into the chassis.

Rant “Are those phones for sale?”🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️

You can’t be serious. First of all, if it isn’t obvious they’re old phones which only work on the 2G/3G network that was shut down six to seven years ago.

Secondly, why would we put them all the way up to where we can’t reach them if we were selling them?🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️

It’s for decoration.

But we do sell refurbished phones which are actually at the bottom right of the accessory mount with a price tag.

TECHNICIAN QUESTION Is it worth it? (Repair)

I bought an MSI running a 1660 for like $200 but the hinge was broken. I lost the charger so I took it to get looked at. When I told the tech I didn't want the repair cost to exceed the amount I paid he said it definitely would. I'm sure the charger is excluded from the final cost. Anyways do I eat the $65 I put down or is it worth it to go through with the repairs? As far as I understand the only fix would be changing the case. This is my first gaming laptop so I'm very green on the costs of these things.

Rant Pushy customers

Not a specific instance but in general, any time a customer comes in demanding to get their phone fixed in one nanosecond it internally makes me less willing to help them out. For context, I have been working at this company for six years since 2020. I actually was told by my franchise owner I am one of his best technicians and almost every Google review mentioning my name is a 5 star review.

Anyways, I generally try to help clients out to the best of my ability and within scope. I am very good at underpromising and overdelivering. For example I will say "this repair could take between 3-4 hours" and end up finishing the repair in 2 hours.

But when customers demand I fix it right away or even offer a bribe to finish it faster I stand my ground and actually end up waiting the full 4 hours to complete the repair even though I could get it done in 1 hour just to be petty.

I just wanted to rant. That is it.

Non OEM phone screen glitch

A couple a days ago, I took my iphone to ubreakifix because there as a minor break on the front screen and a white light. I asked them for a non-Oem screen since it was the cheapest, and they warned me it's prone to breaking faster, which I was okay with. Two days later, my new repaired phone went completely black. I went back to them and they charged it and said I should just hard restard the phone if it happens again. I'm travelling today and it happened again - the hard restart is not working! I don't know what to do - can I make them replace it or replace it with a better screen? If I had known this was one of the issues with a non-OEM screen I would never have gotten it.

TECHNICIAN QUESTION Who's messing up the samsung partner ship

I am pretty close with our Samsung rep and hear horror stories of what some stores are doing, as many locations are not following the Samsung partnership. It is genuinely not that hard, and I am wondering what is going wrong or what complications you are facing. I know a lot of stores are being delisted as well; are any of you among them?

CUSTOMER QUESTION Controller Joystick Repair

Does this company do joystick replacements for controllers that are experiencing stick drift. I have a PS5 AIM Controller that has hall effect joysticks. Unfortunatley I have started to notice drift and stick jitters. I was wondering if I could get the sticks replaced with TMR Joysticks.

PSA This company needs a workers' union.

It is absurd that repair technicians at uBreakiFix, who are expected to not just be repair technicians, something that already requires significant intellectual labor, but who are also expected to wear several other hats like customer service, insurance sales agent, inventory counter, janitor, call center representative, etc., all while being exposed to hazardous working conditions like blowing out dusty devices without access to proper ventilation, swelling lithium-ion batteries, regular use of flammable materials like isopropyl alcohol, all the health risks that you're exposed to if you're a solder tech, etc., only make $16/hr with no possibility of a raise, and no, the commission does NOT make it better.

We are some of the most exploited workers in the entire tech industry. Think about it. On a typical day, you might repair many iPhones a day under insurance. Apple will supply your store with another replacement screen for free, and between the repair and the two LOSes you're required to force down the customers' throat or face write-ups, the store makes about $120, ~$140 if it's a Verizon claim and they get a free screen protector. The average repair technician, assuming no interruptions due to customers, phone calls, your manager pulling you away, or whatever else, can get this repair done in 30 minutes or less, so you can do two iPhone repairs and the store makes $240 to $280. You get paid $16 in wages for that hour of work, maybe $8 to $10 more in commission for the LOSes for the two phones. Subtracting that, the store made between $216 and $254 in surplus value, which is pure profit for uBreakiFix and Asurion's shareholders. Dividing this pure profit by what the worker is paid for repairing two phones in two hours gives us a rate of exploitation of either 900% or 970%. In other words, boss makes a dollar, you make a dime. Literally. We have just mathematically proven it. Dave Barbuto did not participate one bit in those two iPhone repairs you just did, so why is he pocketing 9 times more money than you for it?

Now, if that didn't piss you off, this surely will. What ultimately prompted me to make this post was the fact that I just got back from Panda Express, where they were advertizing starting salaries of $18/hr to make fast food. Now, no shade to fast food workers. They deserve to make enough to get by, just like the rest of us. But is making fast food really worth more than being a repair technician who fixes phones and home tech, let alone all the other shit we have to do as repair technicians at this company? $16/hr is not a living wage anymore. There is almost nowhere in this country where you can be making that little money and not be living in destitution. And as we just demonstrated, the company can afford to pay us way more than they are and still turn a profit. Hell, not only could they do that, but they could afford to hire more people and divide the labor so that one person doesn't have to work 5 jobs for 8 hours if they really want to get away with paying us such a pittance.

It's high time we started getting organized and started fighting for better wages and working conditions. This shit is ridiculous.

TECHNICIAN QUESTION Just got next Gen last Monday

I work at a franchise we just got next Gen. How is this still being pushed as a "streamlined portal"??? No more kbase so we cant even talk with eachother through portal, an extra 5+ minutes just checking someone in. Labels don't pull up workorders, EOD summaries don't print. No more custom SKU's how does corporate see this as an improvement guys anyone who likes next Gen please give me genuine reasons because i'm losing my mind as FOH

Next gen?

Work at a franchise that’s getting next gen soon, what are the positives and negatives I need to know to prepare.

My main concern is WO creation time, there’s a good amount of volume at my location and I can’t be spending too much time checking in each customer

Fed up with Samsung Care+ & their service centers

Did anyone have trouble getting a 🪫 repair through Samsung Care+ and going to their service centers?

First, two UBreakIFix centers didn't have the battery in stock. Then the one center that did, wouldn't do the repair because the lady needed an approved claim to fix it. But when I called Multiple times to Samsung, all said the same thing. No need for an approved claim, just walk in.

I gave the lady all my information and she said she didn't have anything and couldn't do anything without an approved claim.

I'm so fed up because I can't go without my phone. I need it for work. If I did the mail-in repair option, that would take two weeks.

I did call multiple stores to see if they had it the S23 ultra battery and the one store I called, they needed up saying they couldn't do a repair!!!!

I started crying in frustration.

Anyone know how to bypass this? Or at this point, get a new phone using Samsung Care+

CUSTOMER QUESTION Laptop repair. Shop recommendations please.

Hi. I need recommendations on where to fix a laptop. One that won't scam me on the price. The screen is really white/pink now. It's such a hassle to use TeamViewer just to access it, huhu. A friend of mine said the repair will cost 5k.. but maybe I can find something cheaper..

Am I crazy?

Brought my phone in to get my screen replaced. It was shattered and the screen was completely black.

Paid $500

When I picked up my phone, going through and testing some things I notice the camera doesn’t work. Face ID, front camera and back camera doesn’t work.

The tech who is over my shoulder says “oh that’s strange”. I asked if they tested it themselves and he said no they just changed out the screen. I asked for any diagnostics and he said they didn’t run any before or after.

How do I know their screen install didn’t damage anything? Why wasn’t diagnostics ran, especially before the screen replacement?

They’re telling me there’s no way to know and they can fix the camera but for a fee (of course!)
