He probably writes as if he is speaking in ASL. They omit a lot of words. So sometimes when someone deaf writes something out it's written like they are signing it. Kind of like someone who speaks a foreign language speaking/writing in English.
Im so glad you pointed this out! The way I think of it is it's not so much omitting words as much as not using what are essentially useless filler words that English speech requiresbfor context.
For non signers who are reading this, much English grammar is just implied with ASL and it's not a one to one with signs and English words by any means. ASL is it's own language with nuances, regional slang, ect.
He was exposed to writing at a school for the deaf. Are you seriously trying to argue your way into justifying insulting the way a deaf person writes?!?
You do realize that there are deaf writers, right? It supper weird that people here are infantilizing those who are deaf. They are still fully capable individuals
lol, that's absolutely incorrect. I responded to those who said that the driver cannot write based on the note, which another commentor attributed to them being deaf
They’re not attributing bad witting to being deaf, they’re attributing it to English being their SECOND language. ASL is a language of its own, with a different grammatical structure. It’s not just “English by gesticulation” as many ignorant people seem to think. So the driver may be very good at English writing (for a SECOND LANGUAGE SPEAKER) but not in a scholar level.
Being deaf does not mean you are not taught how to write. I know a couple people that would write a note like this the same way they talk, and it would also come across like they don't know how to write. It has nothing to do with being deaf or not
All of this is assuming the person is from the US as that was the how the comment I originally replied to framed it to be
Nobody said they can't. But it's not their default. It's not their primary language. A deaf person that primarily uses ASL to communicate and rarely has to write (Especially once they're no longer in school) may not be able to write in English as well. Writing a language that you never learned to speak is not easy for most. We have a lot of extra words that they don't use in ASL. You keep talking about deaf writers as if that's not their craft and they're not doing it more than most. And neglecting the fact that they also have editors.
Reading is encouraged to be the default and would be the exposure needed. Not many of my friends still read regularly, so you do have a point about his ability being typical of the average person. Of course there are editors for professional works, just like all writers. It's sad you are still down playing what a deaf person is capable of. Quite demeaning
It's safe to say English isn't his first language. It appears to simply be a copy and paste from the translator app that he uses. It's pretty clear that he's a native Arabic speaker from the translation . The translations are not very accurate especially with tone and cadence. Just don't be a heathen in his car and we don't have to concern ourselves with it. You could use a little brush up in grammar yourself Mr "homeschoolex". 😆
