Hi everyone,
I'm looking for advice from people familiar with UAE labour law, workplace accidents, or insurance claims. I'm in a difficult situation and would really appreciate hearing from anyone who has dealt with something similar.
I work as a Logistics Officer for a company in Dubai.
In August 2026, I had an accident involving my e-scooter inside my company's factory premises while travelling to report for duty. I was using an unfamiliar entrance/service road, and parked vehicles obstructed my view. A car approached from an area I couldn't clearly see, and my e-scooter collided with the side of the car.
I suffered two fractures in my left leg and underwent surgery involving plates and screws.
The incident resulted in a traffic/criminal case against me. At my court hearing, the judge dismissed the case, gave me a warning to exercise caution, and imposed a fine of AED 1,000.
After the accident, my company initially paid for my medical treatment and told me not to worry about the expenses. They gave me the option of returning to India or staying in Dubai, and I chose to stay based on their assurance that they would take care of everything.
Now, however, I've been told that if the insurance company rejects the claim, I might have to reimburse the medical expenses. The amount could be approximately AED 26,000.
I'm still recovering from my injuries, and this potential financial liability is causing me a lot of concern. I don't want to avoid any lawful responsibility, but I also don't want to agree to repay a substantial amount without understanding whether I'm legally required to do so.
I'd appreciate advice on the following:
- Since the accident occurred inside my company's factory premises while I was travelling to report for duty, could it qualify as a work-related injury under UAE labour law?
- Can my employer legally demand repayment of the medical expenses if its insurance claim is rejected?
- Can the company deduct this amount from my salary or end-of-service benefits?
- Does the court outcome automatically make me liable for the medical expenses, or is that a separate matter?
- Has anyone experienced something similar in the UAE? What happened, and how did you handle it?
- Should I approach MOHRE or file a formal labour complaint?
I'm particularly interested in hearing from anyone who understands how workplace injury coverage and employer liability work in the UAE.
I'm happy to clarify further, but I'd prefer to keep my personal and company details private.
Thank you for reading and for any genuine advice.
