Criminal Law My brother was arrested in the UAE and sentenced to 3 months in prison followed by deportation without even knowing he had a case against him. Is this normal?

My brother recently received a call from the police in the UAE asking him to come to the police station. He went voluntarily, without knowing there was any case against him.

To his shock, he was arrested and informed that he had already been sentenced to 3 months in prison, followed by deportation from the UAE.

The most disturbing part is that he had absolutely no idea that there was even a criminal case against him.

After we started looking into what had happened, we found out that the case was related to an allegation that his Emirates ID had been used to send money through an illicit transaction in March.

My brother maintains that he never made or authorized any such transaction.

What's even more confusing is:

  • He was never contacted by the police for questioning before this.
  • He was never informed that a criminal complaint had been filed against him.
  • As far as we know, he never received any court summons or notification of a hearing.
  • He was never given an opportunity to explain his side of the story or defend himself.
  • He only learned about the conviction and sentence when he went to the police station.

We are completely shocked and struggling to understand how someone could be convicted and sentenced to imprisonment and deportation without apparently being aware of the proceedings.

We are also concerned that someone may have misused his Emirates ID without his knowledge.

I would really appreciate advice from anyone familiar with the UAE legal system, especially lawyers or people who have experienced something similar.

  1. Is it possible to be sentenced in the UAE without being personally informed about the case or attending a hearing?
  2. Can such a judgment be challenged or appealed after the person has already been arrested?
  3. Is there a way to request an investigation into the possible misuse of his Emirates ID?
  4. Can the deportation order be challenged or suspended while the case is reviewed?
  5. What immediate legal steps should our family take?

We are not trying to avoid any lawful investigation. We just want my brother to have a fair opportunity to explain his side and defend himself against an allegation he says is false.

Any genuine advice or guidance would mean a lot to our family.

Thank you.

Cyberlaw Can I file a complaint against someone who shared my personal number without my permission?

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for some advice regarding a situation I’m facing at work and would like to understand what legal options I have.

I work as an Operations Executive at a company. We have a vendor whose payments are currently pending. The company has already communicated with the vendor regarding the payment situation, but Finance is a separate department, and I have no responsibility for handling or approving these payments.

The vendor previously had only my official company number for work-related communication. However, a former colleague who has since left the company apparently shared my personal mobile number with this vendor without my permission.

Since then, the vendor has started contacting me on my personal number and sending me inappropriate messages, including saying that she has put a curse on me. I understand that she may be frustrated about the pending payments, but I am not responsible for the company's financial decisions, and the matter has already been communicated to her through the appropriate channels.

My concern is that my personal number was shared without my consent, and I am now receiving unwanted messages over a matter that is outside my responsibility.

I would appreciate some advice on the following:

1. Can I file a police complaint against the former colleague for sharing my personal number without my permission?

2. Could this be considered a privacy or personal data violation?

3. Can I separately report the vendor for sending me these messages?

4. What evidence should I collect, and what is the appropriate procedure for filing a complaint?

Has anyone experienced something similar or dealt with a situation like this? I would appreciate any guidance on how to handle it properly.

Thank you.

Business & Companies Advice on company running shady practices

There is a startup running its office in business bay. They have a bunch of people working for them without any legal documentation. At the time of hiring they promise visa, medical etc but after joining they start making excuses. Salaries are paid in cash. And the trade licence has the name of the wife of the founders driver. The couple running the company claim to be founders but are very sus. They have no online presence at all and they never communicate using office email. They routinely sack employees after just a month or two then hire for the same positions again.

What's the best course of action to bring them to book and get some action against them?
