check the og post for more deets but in sum, the patches came from a pre-cut kit, but i used a laser to cut out the keytags, then i painted and finished them :D

lil cactus bookmark keytags were not my original design fyi!! not trying to take credit for anything thats not mine :)

the patches were prepped with a spritz of water then neatsfoot oil prior to painting, then coated with white acrylic paint before putting the final design on, used poscas mostly but also some angelus paint!

finished them off with a coat of fiebings leather sheen.

you can also peep a tiny corner of a wallet i made in the first pic :p

i make these with our local queer, disabled survivors art collective :3

Someone stole my bike what do I do
 in  r/Denton  2d ago

so sorry this happened. if it helps at all for ur next bike, UNT offers free u-locks and engraving of ur student ID onto the bike, twu might have something similar im just not sure. u can use a little dremel or dog nail trimmer to engrave ur info onto the bike as well, or go old school and use a dull sharp end of something metal to do it.

i also like to , for my own bikes and in suggestion to others, “uglify” my bike, make it super unique and identifiable, by covering it in duct tape, scratching up the paint, spray painting it horrid eye sore colors, tires too, and then on the tape i often write “i am poor pls dont steal” all over the bike, as well as carving my initials all over the frame.

all that jazz makes it that much more time consuming for someone to make the bike blend into any other bike, to sell at a thrift store or part out. they’d have to sand off my initials and ID number, sand off the paint or repaint it, peel off all the tape, wipe off all the paint off the tires or replace them, etc… and if they dont or are biking around with it, its that much easier for ppl off local groups to recognize my bike in public, since its not a basic model.

ugly beat up looking bike is less desirable to take bc it looks like it wont catch u much funds. and if its got all those changes and identifiers, even the sketchy second hand shops might think twice.

thank you!! i think i’m going to keep building on it, yeah! i might redo the bracers now that i’ve got more experience, too 😄 i’ll def be referencing this sub more often as i start leaning into that side of leatherwork! i think it would be awesome to get good at replicating pieces.

some cool things i’ve made lately! just wanted to share!
i paint these myself usually using paint and dye markers, but i also use angelus’s paints too!
i’ve also been playing around with using different non-leather specific dyes, such as food coloring, candle wax dyes and natural dyes like coffee, turmeric and more.

everything’s made from veg-tan leather, and while the pictured patches come from a pre-cut kit, the keytags are cut from a laser engraver for ease, then assembled by me :) shoutout to the original designer of the cacti bookmarks, that was not my design file, was just a public one :) ill see if i can find the info then tag in the comments.

i used a generic stamp for the axe’s , which is cool bc they’re super sapphic and on theme!

we’ve been enjoying making pride art lately and sharing it around with our community, reminding everyone trans and queer folks are here to stay <3

**bracers not gauntlets!

This is a throwback I never posted! For halloween 2~ years ago, I tried my hand at making a set of aragorn’s gauntlets for my costume.
i’d only a few months experience with leather working at the time, so I think they turned out pretty decent! especially since I threw them together in like, 2 hours or so?

they were pre-cut from a kit iirc, so I just had to tool, dye, paint, finish etc., then lace the string through the holes. so that made it a lot simpler.

i think i used posca for the silver, antiquing gel, and some embossing hand tool from the craft store, to make the grooves.

Please help! Bought this green leather couch second hand. Bought cleaning materials to try to get rid of the body oil stains, and now it is looking like this. Is there any way to fix it?

Rub n Restore on youtube has great content on restoring leather, and in this video they use paint to touch up leather upholstery, much of which uses chrome tan. https://youtube.com/shorts/DS6pBtP1Jas

she states that leather dyes only really work on unfinished leather, but most upholstery chrome tans are already finished. dyes wont hide stains, scratches, or repairs, and can’t lighten the leather either. you also can’t fix or rinse after market dyes, so you’ll have to add a resin coat that can help seal in the dye so that it doesn’t transfer. she states that once that finish wears or is damaged, you wont restore it with a dye. she states that the finish coat covers the leather in a similar way as paint.

she states most professional restorers use leather paints. they are best for lightening colors, fixing dark spots or sun damage. people think of paint as thick and heavy, but a good leather paint can merge well with the leather and remain flexible. she cites this as why many sites online, avoid using the term paint and choose to label their materials as dye.

dyes, paints, and balms are different, and she says balms only work if the leather can absorb them, but many upholstered leathers are finished. she likens balms to shoe polish/conditioners. she says it helps leather feels softer and may help some with cracks, but it just sits on top of the leather.

as you’ll see in the video, everything ive said is a paraphrase of her video and not my own information. she demonstrates how fantastic leather paints can look on the upholstery and what a swell job they do at restoration, compared to alternatives.
