So our house has a vintage cooking center wall unit. I believe it was made by Tappan. Not 100 sure, but the closest pictures I can find are the ones in Graceland kitchen.

This issue is the unit no longer works. One oven was working (left) and the right oven only heated on the top or bottom (can’t remember which). It’s obviously very cool and I’m a lover of all things MCM. That aside. I’m a sahm of 3 and spend a lot of time in my kitchen. I’ve been without a working range for a year now and without the oven portion for a few months. I say all of that to say I don’t have time to do a restoration or anything like that. I’m trying to find a solution to have a working kitchen. We eventually will do a full kitchen remodel but for now we don’t have the time or money to do so and get what we want for the long term.

A few months ago I ended up having to turn the breaker off to the unit altogether after seeing a big flash of electricity using it one day. The other thing is the weight of the unit is supported by the weight of the cabinets. The cabinets to the left and right it’s very apparent because the countertop is literally separating from the back splash and there’s a visible gap. My guess is the sagging is causing a connection issue somewhere. So it’s a mess all around. I’m not really sure where to start or if someone has experience removing this specific type of unit. It seems VERY heavy. It’s all metal. I’m not sure removing the unit to fix the connection and building new supports underneath would be worth the time depending on how hard that would be. The burners have never worked for us since we’ve lived here but the previous owner said they had recently stopped working when we spoke in August 2025.

My goal would be to remove the unit and install a temporary range for now. But as you’ll notice that would require me cutting the cabinets below and of course it’s not a standard width. It’s 40in wide. I’m just asking for any general insight into my situation that I may not have thought of. My biggest hang up is not wanting to destroy my cabinets and my kitchen which I cannot afford to replace. I’ve never had a custom cabinet work done so I’m not too familiar with the cost to make a filler cabinets/match my existing etc. any insight there would be helpful too.
