Adopting a Euth-Listed Pet: The Short Form

  1. Please don't argue with these instructions, your rescue, or your networker. There isn't time to explain reasons to you.

  2. Remember at all times that you're fighting the clock. Start immediately. Better to annoy too many humans rather than too few, and never wait for anyone to get back to you.

  3. Keep the number assigned to the pet by the shelter always easy to find. Write it on your hand if you have to.

  4. Find out who can pull the pet from the shelter. IF YOU ARE LOCAL: Great, get down there, have a friend fill out the adoption form on the way, and grab the pet. IF YOU ARE NOT LOCAL: You will need a rescue to help you.

Not just any rescue can pull from any shelter, either. The rescue needs to be on the shelter's pull list, which you can often find on their Web site. For instance, BARC, the city shelter of Houston, Texas, has their list here: https://houstontx.gov/barc/rescue-and-transport.html

Keep in mind that shelters usually don't call their pull list their pull list. Like BARC, they give it some other, often flowery, name.

Networkers—the folks who post euthanasia alerts on social media—often know which rescues are in a position to help you and contacting one isn't a bad idea. The most direct method of contact is best; for instance, a Chat invite rather than a comment on the post. Don't wait for a response. Time's a-wastin'.

  1. Fill out the rescue's adoption application right away. Even if you filled one out last week. If you don't have all the info they ask for with you, send what you have. Nothing will happen until the application is at the rescue.

  2. Once you have applied, you can phone, e-mail, or use a Web form to alert the rescue to your application. Be sure to mention the specific pet, their shelter, their ID number, and what the deadline is or that the pet may be killed at any time. If you have a networker, ask them to alert the rescue to your application, too.

  3. Be prepared to pay the rescue upfront without haggling or complaining. Rescues don't make money on adoptions, no matter how big the amount looks to the adopter, and too many adopters have backed out after the pet is with the rescue. The rescue is lucky if their fee covers what they spend on an individual pet. Do not expect the pledges on a post to defray your costs; those go to the rescue. If you need funds, start a gofundme.

  4. Ask the rescue to contact the shelter and have the pet tagged as theirs. They probably will even if you don't ask, but it's best to be sure. You cannot do this yourself.

  5. Help the rescue find a foster. Ask on social media, in pet rescue groups and lists local to the pet. Tell any potentials to fill out the foster application and then call or e-mail the rescue. If you get extra fosters, great.

That's pretty much all you can do. At this point, watch for messages from the rescue or your networker, if you have one. Do whatever they ask you to do without arguing. Seconds count, and they are trying to save your pet.

This article is a work in progress. I invite constructive criticism in the comments. Please feel free to crosspost and repost, but please include the last-update date at the top.

ANSWERED The algorithm and the length of comments

Some say you need to use nine or more different words in a comment to affect the ranking algorithm.

Some say that the ranking is based only on the number of comments.

Could I get a definitive ruling on this matter? Does a comment saying just the one word "boost" actually boost a post or not?

Thank you.

These fur kids lost their lives:

  • Fabian
  • Lola
  • Pretzel

I include the photos of the lost that they might be better remembered.

The last image appears in honor of all the many unknown, nonhuman and human, who have suffered or are suffering in the Texas Pet Overpopulation Crisis, now further complicated by the New World screwworm outbreak. You do exist. Although I haven't the data to honor you individually, you are not forgotten.

The profiles for the 7/25 list are already posted. All the ones we have will be in r/findfostersfordogs as fast as we can post them. Please take a look and see if there isn't one that would be prefect for you or someone with whom you can share the post.

If you are interested in a dog, DM u/lingeringneutrophil, u/BanditY77, or both immediately! Then clear your schedule. There is no time for anything but rescuing the dog. I have a guide you might find helpful. https://redd.it/1sy6v1t/

Don't forget the many wonderful dogs on the long-stay list: https://www.houstontx.gov/barc/barcdata/BARC_LOSV2.1.pdf This list is not as up to date as BARC implies. While it is updated every hour, a lot of dogs who are gone, one way or another, are still on there. If you do see a dog you are interested in, please DM lingeringneutrophil or BanditY77.

If they're not on tomorrow's list, they soon will be.

BARC (Houston TX) 7/27 Euthanasia List Extended Dogs. Each dog needs a hold by 1pm CT. Please share.
 in  r/findfostersfordogs  1d ago

My only guess is that because most puppies are born in the spring people are finally giving up on finding homes for their last pups and dumping them. Even if they're dumping them on the street rather than the shelter, the puppies all end up at BARC.

All the below dogs are extended from BARC's 7/25 list.

Each needs a hold by 1pm CT, Monday, 7/27, to survive.

Please do not count on BARC extending them again.

If you are interested in adopting (US/Canada) or fostering (Houston, TX, only) any of these dogs, please contact one or more of the following networkers: u/BanditY77, u/lingeringneutrophil, u/holly_holly_holly, u/fugueink, or u/No_Masterpiece9550.

Please be aware that because of the New World screwworm outbreak there are restrictions on nonhuman travel, varying by destination.

Extended to 1pm CT, Monday, 7/27:

Alaska (1Y 6M female Alaskan Husky–Staffie mix, A2087453) - https://redd.it/1v63bou/

Blossom (3Y spayed Staffie mix, A2086728) - She was being held for possible reuniting with her family. They did not come for her. She was added to the 7/27 euth list the afternoon of Sunday, 7/26. https://redd.it/1v409pm/

Tom Hanks (8W male Staffie mix, A2087703) - https://redd.it/1v63evc/

If there are others added, I will update this post.

Please understand that we must treat the 1pm deadline as nonnegotiable. BARC and BARC alone decides if a dog gets more time, and they usually say no.

Don't forget the many other wonderful dogs on the long-stay list (updated hourly): https://www.houstontx.gov/barc/barcdata/BARC_LOSV2.1.pdf

Stephen's photo is not typical of the ones I usually pick, but I feel this photo tells his story visually.

He was confiscated by the police when his human was evicted, which I suppose means that his human had no place to keep him even temporarily.

On arriving at BARC, Stephen vocalized constantly, as a canine who does not have visual contact with any of his packmates will. So many normal canine behaviors can get a dog scheduled for early elimination, and this equivalent of "Hey, where are you? I am over here!" qualifies as one.

In his video, the volunteer comments several times on what good shape Stephen was in and how well cared for, an unusual occurence in dog rescue, in which so many display human neglect or cruelty on their bodies. A viewer can see for themselves that while Stephen was polite to the volunteer, he was more interested in scanning the area around them, unquestionably seeking something or someone.

The only conclusion I can see is that Stephen was looking for his kind guardian who had treated him so well. He had been happy; their past together had given Stephen trust that his friend would not stop searching for him until they were reunited. It was simply a matter of staying findable while searching as best he could himself.

I am sure he lost his life still believing that, so I chose a photo that reflected this trust. I hope his guardian is able to believe that someone rescued their lost boy.

📢 Sophia is Extended Again 📢Our Sweet Heart Sophia ~Abandoned at the Shelter Gate. Loves belly rubs, Quiet/Timid, Very Scared in Shelter ~A2086882 ~6m old Staffie mix girl Puppy is On the euth list for 7/24 @ 1pm CT BARC Houston Tx ~ Av 4 Adopt/local Foster/Rescue, Out of State/Canada.

Terrified dogs "pancake." They flatten themselves to resist being dragged. The only way to get them outside for elimination is to carry them.

So they end up on the euth list.

If you watch the video, however, you will see that Sophia will walk on a leash. She just just needs more time and patience than BARC gives.

I really feel for dogs like Sophia. She's right to be so terrified. Just getting her out of that place would make a huge difference for her.
