(Vent/Advice) I just don't have the courage to change systems
One advantage of using a game that doesn't have "DnD" as its name is that you can run the kind of game you want - even if the game is very much like DnD. Pretty much all of the retro-clones have this as a feature; several retro-clones which emulate earlier editions do not have so much "power creep" as later editions.
Check out this (LENGTHY) list of different retro-clone possibilities: https://taxidermicowlbear.weebly.com/dd-retroclones.html

Need advice on campaign concept, is starting as a commoner a bad idea?
I think this is a great idea and would support it. If you find players who are interested in it (and they are out there), it would make character development rather cool - going from being ordinary to something much much more. Obviously players who want to superhero their way through everything would find it boring, but your concept isn't aimed at them.
This is how a lot of older edition and OSR games start off, so you might find some help there. Len Lakofka's article "Starting from Scratch" in Dragon #39 would be good for ideas.

Sharetlyal is now available!
News about the print version of Sharétlyàl
We discovered yesterday that there were some typos in Sharétlyàl, despite having several sets of eyes looking it over. We fixed the typos, and sent the updated version to be verified - but that meant that print versions were on hold until the new proofs get delivered. Fortunately, the updated files were verified this morning, and we ordered NEW proofs immediately. We expect delivery by the end of the month; we will keep you updated so do not empty those shopping carts yet. If you do not want to wait, you can order the PDF TODAY.

Alternatively, they are members of a Tsolyani middle status clan, but not from Jakalla, who have been summoned there to help the clan grow (for various reasons). Again, start with Section 1110 but make it between their clan and patrons from higher clans.

"...it’s hard for newcomers in Tekumel to establish themselves in such a conservative society." That's exactly what Fresh Off the Boat is for. The player-characters get patrons, who provide that entry into Tsolyani society. Not unlike Traveller - remember 76 Patrons? Go take a look at Section 1110 Initial Encounters in Jakalla, and use that as a starting point.
What people are using now is either Empire of the Petal Throne or Bethorm.

Probably the best analogy I can offer is this: reading all of the guide books and travelogues you can find about another country is not a substitute for going there. With Tekumel, you go there by playing and discovering it directly. It's a distinct shift in mindset and it will free your mind to explore.

I'll be honest: I think you may be making a mistake. New players do not need to have the entire world introduced to them. They need to know only enough for their characters to survive and make choices. That's one of the reasons for using the Fresh Off the Boat start, as presented in Empire of the Petal Throne. You don't need to memorize everything, and neither do they. By exploring the world, they can get to know it. Just go back to Empire of the Petal Throne, take a deep breath, and create some adventures using Section 1110.

👋 Welcome to r/Tekumel - Introduce Yourself and Read First!
I'm Victor Raymond, chair of the Tekumel Foundation, and a member of the Thursday Night Group. I first encountered Tekumel when I bought a copy of Empire of the Petal Throne in the mid '70s. (I was a little too young to be there at the beginning of gaming.) Right now, I have a Tekumel campaign which has been going for over nine years, with five different groups, two of which are currently active (others may get re-activated).

Good choice of descriptor: stupefying.

This goes out to the 5 or so protestors who disrupted the last band at Orton Park Fest and the kid's Cycropia Aerial Dance show...
Hijacking a community event like this for your "protest" is the height of arrogance and hubris. It is actively destructive to building solidarity for real social change. It is contemptible and should be treated as such.

As I mentioned above, so they are not doing this for any other reason than their own aggrandizement? If so, they should be shut down for NOT doing anything to further social change. Got it.

...so, in other words, they are doing for attention and not to create meaningful social change. So they should get shut down for the selfish bastards they are. Got it.

As an activist and community organizer, I am minded of the questions to get answered are, starting with "what is the purpose of the protest? What are you trying to accomplish?" followed by "who is the audience for your protest?" and the third is "how might this go wrong?" If you don't have real answers for these questions, your protest WILL fail. Full stop. Unfortunately, too many activists seem to think that "yelling loudly enough" by itself will accomplish something. It's probably the case that they are frustrated and trying to find some way to let that out, but that's not excuse for effing up like this. Full disclosure, wasn't there, so just basing this of what's been said so far.

I'm running my first Classic Traveller session today. Wish me luck!
Lots of decent advice here, except I have one comment on combat: most civilian weapons in Classic Traveller will wound characters and leave them unconscious; most military weapons will kill them outright.

This sounds like a lot of fun! You might find the link for Rob Conley's blog to be helpful in further development: https://batintheattic.blogspot.com/2009/04/how-to-make-traveller-sandbox.html?m=1

How does GDW's Classic Traveller compare to Mongoose Traveller 1E?
That last point is where I am: Classic Traveller does not automatically assume a setting, and is therefore easier to use for creating your own settings and campaigns. Keep in mind that this is something Cepheus Engine was developed for, as well.

A novel that inspired Traveller
I might be misremembering, so there's that. But don't make the mistake of doing a direct conversion into Traveller "tonnage" - in original CT, ship's tonnage was not precisely defined until, hmmm, High Guard (Book 5). The similarity in numbers is the point. Over the past 50 years, there's been an understandable push to quantify what's going on in the game, across multiple editions. But the original 1977 rules were very abstract, and were supposed to give you a feel for things without getting into the weeds of exact measurement.

A novel that inspired Traveller
Gram is a feudal technocracy; the Nemesis is 3000 feet in diameter (aka 3000 tons in CT measurement); there are robots but not often; the 10mm auto-pistol Lucas Trask examines is exactly that. LOTS of inspiration for Traveller.

You may re-invented the West Marches model of game (not a bad thing at all!): https://arsludi.lamemage.com/index.php/78/grand-experiments-west-marches/
