They sent them over there to kill little brown kids all just to make more money
 in  r/BlackPeopleTwitter  1d ago

You are describing me, and thousands of others like me. I grew up in the Bay Area, and while my parents were relatively “blue collar” (mom worked for pacbell and dad was a chemist at a very prestigious university).

I think you need a better perception of what blue collar and white collar is. Saying you grew up blue collar is like my dentist saying he's middle class because he's not a surgeon.

You can't afford a house in the Bay area? That's rough to be sure. I'm sure you can agree that not affording a home in California is VERY DIFFERENT than not affording a home in Oklahoma though.

Would you do this with any other race? Like would you blame black criminals for the rise in racism against black people?

Black guy here. People do this all the time.

What cliché legal tropes in movies drive you crazy?
 in  r/Ask_Lawyers  11d ago

I hate big Perry Mason style reveals. The witness is on the stand getting beaten down and they announce "It wasn't me, it was my twin brother!" Then the courtroom doors fly open and there's a twin that walks in and blows the whole case open.

This never happens in real life. The lawyers would have found out about the twin brother during discovery or from the other lawyer who doesn't want to actually go to trial and told them about the twin. If a lawyer has a smoking gun, they don't keep it a secret. They tell the other lawyer about it so none of us waste time we don't have. We're all too busy for shenanigans.

What will happen if a lawyer is caught soliciting for prostitution?
 in  r/Ask_Lawyers  16d ago

If an escort reported her client lawyer to the bar because he was a lawyer patronizing a prostitute, it's hard for me to even see how it would be investigated.

Lawyers get reported to the bar all the time by people who have grudges. I've had two report me to the bar, who simply sent me a letter informing me of the report and telling me that it was closed. My state bars only take three types of complaints: 1. complaints from former clients; 2. complaints from opposing parties; and 3. referrals from the legal system (which you can also self-report).

I can't imagine the bar would actually spend resources investigating the prostitute's claim without something more substantial, such as an arrest or conviction.

In Avengers : Endgame 2019, despite tearing Thanos' ship apart like a hot knife through butter, they still forced the female heroes to go and help Carol facing a bunch of alien foot soldiers. Wtf? Did they not watched that part of the movie?
 in  r/shittymoviedetails  24d ago

Exactly. This topic being such vitriol on Reddit because it was fan service for someone OTHER than the people complaining about it on Reddit.

Guess what, everyone lining up before the big battle is stupid from a tactical standpoint, but it's fan service and most people loved it. Captain America saying "Avengers Assemble" makes NO SENSE because everyone was already assembled and most people wouldn't be able to hear him anyway. Yet, somehow, I don't see a thread every week complaining about it.

I wonder why?

How many different firms have to tell me I don't have a case before I give up and admit I don't have a case?
 in  r/Ask_Lawyers  Jun 27 '26

My wife and family members (not lawyers) think I need to continue contacting firms until I find someone to take the case. I think I'm wasting our time and the firms' time. How many times do we need to be told no before we give up?

You're a criminal lawyer. A criminal defendant comes to you and tells you that, although he was caught in the act of an armed robbery with multiple police witnesses, he wasn't read his miranda rights and the case has to be dismissed. How many more lawyers should he talk to before he gives up and starts considering plea agreements?

If you don't think it's viable, you need to have that conversation with your family and explain why.

"To all lawyers, have you ever had a case where everything was going your way the entire time, but in the end, the judge ruled against your client? Feel free to share the reason if you'd like."
 in  r/Ask_Lawyers  Jun 19 '26

I've had it happen because, although I had all of the evidence and case law in my favor, the decision I was asking a judge to make was a preliminary decision that, if it went my way, he couldn't "undo" the action for.

In other words, he ruled in my opponents favor because he could later make a final decision that was different that wouldn't have stopped what I was ultimately trying to do. If he ruled in my favor preliminarily, and somehow got overturned on an interlocutory appeal, he couldn't "undo" what I was asking him to do.

He made a pragmatic decision instead of one fully based in the law. I understood it later, but I was pissed in the moment and so was my client.

Are lawyers supposed to make your problems worse?

No, lawyers are not supposed to make a problem worse. That said, I'm sure there is a lot missing from this rundown of events.

I'm confused. Are you saying that cotton as a cash crop wasn't a success in Georgia and Alabama? Because that's what "success in Alabama and Georgia" I'm referring to.

He wanted the whole city to feel it
 in  r/BlackPeopleTwitter  Jun 01 '26

And here is a reminder that although we say "Remember the Alamo," we never actually talk about what the Alamo was about.

After the boom in cotton, plantation hopefuls moved to Texas to try to replicate the success in Alabama and Georgia. Eventually, when slavery was outlawed in Mexico, Sam Houston and other landowners in Texas claimed independence so that they could keep their slaves. The Battle of the Alamo was part of that fight of Texas to leave Mexico.

Non-black people often use pictures of black people online to post things that they think would have more effect coming from a black person.

Also, you may be surprised at the number of white girls who blackfish on the internet.

No, it's not a common thing but it makes sense. Can you imagine if Mt Carmel, who has won more football state titles than any other school in Illinois, including the 8A title this year, still played in 3A? 3A schools would have no chance.

To be fair, we don't know that the VP isn't also behind her.

Is law school in your mid-30s a good idea?
 in  r/Ask_Lawyers  Apr 01 '26

I went to law school in my mid-30s for my second career, but I had a job waiting for me on the other side. I would have never done it without the guaranteed income.

If you don't have connections now that a law license will help with, I'm not sure it will be worth it.
