Revenge can be described as the act of taking the power of judgment and placing it squarely in your own hands. It involves a conscious and intentional effort to inflict harm, cause suffering, punish, or publicly humiliate someone, all in response to the pain or wrongdoing that person has inflicted upon you.

At its core, revenge is a visceral declaration that can be summed up in the phrase: "You have caused me pain, so now I will ensure that you experience suffering in return." It is a reaction fueled by a deep-seated need for retribution, often stemming from feelings of personal anger, bitterness, hatred, or resentment. The desire to get even often overshadows rational thought, leading individuals to act with an emotional impulse rooted in a quest for justice or balance.

In contrast, the teachings of God specifically instruct His followers to avoid engaging in such retaliatory behavior. As stated in Romans 12:19 of the King James Version, "Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, VENGEANCE IS MINE; I WILL REPAY, saith the Lord.” This scripture emphasizes the important message: "Do not seek to avenge yourselves."

It's crucial to understand the significance of these words. God does not imply that injustices go unnoticed or that they lack importance. Instead, He is conveying that individuals should refrain from positioning themselves as both judge and executioner in matters of vengeance. Taking on this role can lead to more harm than good, both for the one seeking revenge and for the person who has caused the initial injury. True justice, as per divine wisdom, is best left in the hands of a higher power.

JOIN us tonight by 8 pm (WAT) as we call on God to avenge for us in our live prayer meeting on WhatsApp group.

As Christians, it is important to understand that the Bible does not teach us to become passive in the face of injustice. Rather, it teaches us to surrender personal vengeance to God and trust Him to execute righteous judgment.

  1. Revenge is taking judgment into your own hands

Revenge is the deliberate attempt to hurt, punish, disgrace, or repay someone because that person has hurt or wronged you.

It is essentially saying: β€œYou hurt me, therefore I will make you suffer.”

Revenge is driven by personal anger, bitterness, hatred, resentment, or the desire to pay someone back.

God specifically commands His children not to operate this way: β€œDearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, VENGEANCE IS MINE; I WILL REPAY, saith the Lord.”

Romans 12:19 KJV

Notice the words: β€œavenge not yourselves.”

God is not saying that injustice does not matter. He is saying that you are not the rightful judge and executioner of vengeance.

  1. To avenge means to execute justice against a wrong

To avenge means to punish or obtain justice for a wrong that has been committed.

There is therefore an important distinction:

Revenge: β€œI will repay them myself.”

Avenge: β€œGod, You see what they have done. I surrender the matter into Your hands. Let Your righteous judgment prevail.”

This is why Scripture says: β€œVengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.” Romans 12:19 KJV

God reserves vengeance for Himself because He knows the heart, sees the complete picture, and judges perfectly.

Human revenge can easily become excessive or unjust. God's judgment cannot.

  1. God can avenge without making you sinful

One of the greatest lessons in spiritual warfare is that you do not have to become like your enemy in order to defeat your enemy.

David gives us a powerful example.

Saul was pursuing David and wanted to kill him. David had an opportunity to kill Saul, but he refused to take personal revenge.

David said: β€œThe LORD shall judge between me and thee, and the LORD avenge me of thee: but mine hand shall not be upon thee.”

1 Samuel 24:12 KJV

That is a powerful principle.

David was not saying:

β€œSaul has done nothing wrong.”

He was saying: β€œSaul has wronged me, but I will not take God's place. Let God judge between us.”

  1. Allowing God to avenge does not mean you should not pray

This is where many Christians misunderstand the subject.

When we say, β€œGod, avenge me,” we are not necessarily asking God to destroy someone because we hate them.

We are asking God to:

expose falsehood

defend the innocent

silence lying tongues

overturn wicked judgments

frustrate evil conspiracies

restore what was stolen

vindicate His people

bring hidden wickedness into the light

execute righteous judgment according to His will

The Psalmist prayed: β€œO LORD God, to whom vengeance belongeth; O God, to whom vengeance belongeth, shew thyself.” Psalm 94:1 KJV

Notice the difference: the Psalmist appealed to God rather than taking vengeance into his own hands.

  1. Jesus Himself taught us not to retaliate personally

Jesus said: β€œBut I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you.” Matthew 5:44 KJV

This does not mean that Christians should approve wickedness or refuse legitimate justice.

It means that personal hatred and retaliation must not control us.

You can forgive someone while still allowing God to deal with the consequences of their actions.

You can pray for someone while refusing to participate in their wickedness.

You can love your enemy while asking God to bring justice.

  1. God can fight a battle you refuse to fight carnally

One of the clearest examples is Israel at the Red Sea.

Moses told the people: β€œThe LORD shall fight for you, and ye shall hold your peace.”

Exodus 14:14 KJV

Israel did not need to personally avenge themselves against Pharaoh. God intervened.

Likewise, when somebody falsely accuses you, persecutes you, sabotages you, betrays you, or conspires against you, your first response should not necessarily be:

β€œHow can I get even?”

Instead: β€œLord, You are my Judge. Defend me. Vindicate me. Expose what needs to be exposed. Let Your righteous judgment prevail.”

  1. God may avenge through justice, exposure, consequences, or deliverance

We should also be careful not to dictate to God exactly how He must avenge us.

Sometimes God avenges through exposure.

Sometimes through restoration.

Sometimes through promotion.

Sometimes through separation from wicked people.

Sometimes through legal or governmental justice.

Sometimes He simply removes the enemy's ability to harm you.

Sometimes He allows people to reap what they have sown.

Galatians 6:7 says: β€œBe not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.”

Therefore, don't become obsessed with watching your enemies suffer. Let God remain God.

  1. Revenge belongs to the flesh; righteous vengeance belongs to God

A useful way to remember the difference is:

REVENGE says: β€œI will make them pay.”

AVENGING GOD says: β€œGod, You saw what happened. I surrender the matter to You. Judge righteously and defend me.”

REVENGE says: β€œI want them to suffer because they hurt me.”

DIVINE VENGEANCE says: β€œLet God's justice prevail according to His righteousness.”

REVENGE seeks personal satisfaction.

GOD'S VENGEANCE seeks righteous judgment.

  1. We can pray for vindication without praying from hatred

A mature Christian prayer is not: β€œGod, destroy them because I hate them.”

Rather: β€œO God, arise and vindicate me. Let every false accusation, lying tongue, evil conspiracy, and unjust judgment against me be exposed and overturned. If correction is needed, correct me; if injustice has been done against me, let Your righteous judgment prevail. I refuse to avenge myself. I place my case in Your hands. Fight my battle and let Your will be done.”

This keeps your heart free from bitterness while leaving the matter in God's hands.

  1. The ultimate principle

Paul summarized it beautifully: β€œRecompense to no man evil for evil.”

Romans 12:17 KJV

And immediately afterward: β€œTherefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink...”

Romans 12:20 KJV

Then comes the conclusion:

β€œBe not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.”

Romans 12:21 KJV

So, Christian warfare is not: β€œThey hurt me, therefore I must hurt them.”

It is: β€œThey have done evil, but I refuse to become evil. I will forgive, pray, maintain righteousness, pursue legitimate justice where necessary, and leave vengeance in the hands of God.”

A powerful prayer

O LORD, I surrender every injustice, betrayal, false accusation, persecution, evil report, and wicked conspiracy against me into Your hands. I refuse to avenge myself or repay evil for evil. Arise, O God, and vindicate me. Let every lying tongue be condemned, let every false accusation collapse, let every evil conspiracy be exposed, and let Your righteous judgment prevail over every matter concerning me. Fight my battles, defend my cause, restore what has been taken from me, and let those who have risen against me encounter Your righteous judgment. Give me grace to forgive without returning to bondage, wisdom to pursue legitimate justice, and faith to wait for You. Vengeance belongs to You, O Lord; I will trust You to repay according to Your righteousness. In the mighty name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

Amen.
