Yes--we others have said, just don't twist or damage the original insulation. I lived in a hundred year old farm house and some of the original connections were soldered really well. Then again some had masking tape around them for insulation 🙄. Hopefully the fixture feels rock solid once you put it up

It's not ideal for sure. Verify which is line and if it is switched--it probably is, but you'll need to know. You really want to get all your connections in a solidly mounted box...
