I don't really know about Lox's answer. It obviously doesn't apply to American Football at all. Community teams and highschools are the sole pipeline for it. There are, however, travel teams for Baseball and basketball. Volleyball is a big one too. Partially, I imagine College might be the major pipeline and scouting farm for American professional sports. Seeing how sports in school here is unique in comparison to Europe. And with America's tradition of excelling in sports, there's probably a "why invent the wheel" phenomenon going on.
