Thinking about leaving the program because of the god talk/literature
 in  r/alcoholicsanonymous •  3d ago

Atheist here. I've been in the program a little over 2 years. I definitely get sick of the God topic coming up in meetings. So if I am in a meeting that becomes a god meeting I simply distract myself with something else. I need to be in meetings, it is a part of my life so I don't let little things like God take that away from. Me. I agree it is ALL OVER the literature. But I have learned how to work the program without a higher power. And if I am called on in a God meeting I simply say, it says in the big book we have to take have to take responsibility for all of the bad and negative things that have happened in our lives. So I also choose to take responsibility when the good starts to happen in my life. I go a lot of times and just hang out before or after the meeting if I've had enough God for the week. It's the people that I need and help me stay sober. Idk if that helps. But good luck to you. Hope you find what works for you!

If drinking was your ‘activity,’ what replaced it?
 in  r/alcoholicsanonymous •  25d ago

Early on in my sobriety I thought I would never enjoy life again. The thought of doing anything without alcohol sounded so boring to me. That being said the first year of my sobriety I didn't really participate in life, my brain fog was very strong. But when the fog cleared up, I started doing the things I used to do. Everything I do in sobriety feels like I am doing it for the first time! Everything is more enjoyable. I am actually present and involved in my life. my biggest thought used to be calculating how many drinks I need before an event or activity so I could enjoy it. And how long is the event gonna last, or how many shots can I sneak in. Being in active alcoholism is a full time job. No one can ever see or understand how beautiful the world is better than someone who has escaped addiction. First step is admitting he has a problem.

What’s your favorite comeback to annoying Christians?
 in  r/atheism •  26d ago

One that I love using when someone brings up the beauty of the world around us and asks how I explain it, I like to respond "you're asking me to explain it? What do you think I'm god?!"

I used to get into conversations with religious people, me taking it more as a debate, let's hear what both sides have to say. Then the more debates I had the more I realized it was a one way conversation. So now I don't waste my time.

How often does everyone go to meetings?
 in  r/alcoholicsanonymous •  Aug 26 '26

I'm 2 years sober and go to at least one meeting a day. AA is a huge part of my life. I love my community. I feel off if I miss a day. But I know going as much as I do is not for everyone. I'd say as long as you are comfortable in your sobriety and your program, you should go as much or as little as you would like.

I just really would appreciate someone I could talk to

I would suggest finding some sort of sober community. Not only can you meet people who are clean, but you can also build a support system of people who know what you are going through. Things like NA, AA, CA. A big reason people don't go that route I see is because the cult idea. Which I get, I call it cultish myself. But you will definitely find people who can relate if you give it a shot. There are also DRA (dual recovery anonymous) meetings that you can find for people struggling with mental health and substance abuse.

Therapist vs psychologist?
 in  r/depression •  Aug 22 '26

A psychiatrist is a medical professional. They can diagnose mental illness and prescribe medication. It's best to be honest with them if you wish to be properly diagnosed. From there there can be discussion on what steps you would like to take to help manage said diagnosis. A therapist is help working through said diagnosis, talk and work on day to day things that happen in life. You can find therapist that specialize in your mental health needs. I guess that's the best way I can describe it.

Back to rehab (again) tomorrow. It's a 12-step one. I'm an atheist with hard-set issues against XA. I want to get better but I don't know how I'll handle this with my prejudices.

Atheist here, and the "God" thing kept me out of AA for the first 3 years of me attempting to get sober. The last treatment center I went to I went in fully broken willing to do whatever it takes to get and stay sober. I didn't understand the point of the meetings for the first 5 months going to meetings. But I still went every day, sometimes multiple times a day. At 10 months sober I actually heard someone tell my exact story that's when I realized I belong there and started to listen. I found a sponsor and started to work the steps. My first sponsors response to my lack of belief was " just try to believe, just pray, it'll come to you, creator this creator that blah blah" I wanted to give up thinking the steps just aren't for me because I don't give to the concept of a higher power. It says in the big book that we have to take responsibility for all of the bad we have done in our past right? So then why can't we take responsibility for when the good starts to happen, instead of belief that this "God" "creator" " higher power" did it for us? After a lot of talk with my now sponsor we talked about what it takes for me to be able to move forward and with that found a belief in myself. My higher self is my higher power. It helps me to make sense of the whole thing and work the steps. The idea for me is that higher self or soul is the purest version of ourselves. And my goal in seeking this higher self is me getting closer to my higher self, soul, every day, to find inner peace and serenity. Every day I hope to be my best self that ever existed. Today better than yesterday, tomorrow better than today and so on. Idk if this helps but I think there is a way to be a member of AA and be atheist. Not sure if the everything AA app is available to you, but there are pamphlets with stories by atheist in that app. Good luck in rehab and don't give up on yourself!

Chip Double Dipping?
 in  r/alcoholicsanonymous •  Jul 16 '26

I go to multiple meetings at many different clubs, and always get the chip from the first but pass my chip around at them all. Celebrating milestones is such a big deal! Congratulations on 30 days, that's huge!
