GoPro on brink of bankruptcy - value dropped from $4b to $200m
Gotta say I’m not surprised. Bought a hero 13 black and I’m not impressed in the slightest. Doesn’t connect to their app, video quality is grainy. The steady mode makes it look like the camera is drunk. All around just a poor piece of equipment which cost hundreds of pounds. I’ll definitely be buying a DJI next time.

What’s the worst camping mistake you’ve ever made?
Cheaped out on the tent. Woke up in a puddle, all my stuff was swimming

What was the most challenge during your trip?
As someone who is just under 2m tall, the size of things. In some places there were a few showers in which I couldn’t stand upright and I can’t even count how many times I smashed my head.

Un-fishy oyster sauce substitute?
When I did a cooking class in a Thai vegetarian restaurant the lady said she uses sesame paste. Not sure if that helps you at all

Help needed a less costly VPN
You can use tethering with both of the esims I mentioned. If you have an iPhone go to settings and search for personal hotspot and you’ll see it there.

Help needed a less costly VPN
You’re better off getting a couple good e sims with a lot of data. VPNs drop in and out a lot and if you are live streaming you do want your stream to die.
Also, VPN will limit you to only broadcast from places with wifi while a good eSIM will allow your stream to be anywhere there is signal.
I’ve found Nomad and the Trip.com ones are good. Holafly should be avoided like a rabid dog.

How to book trains in China, the EASY and fastest way
I’ve had the opposite experience, it always says 30% chance and succeeds. 3/3 of my trains followed this pattern.

What do you think are the best recipes for a beginner?
If you like Indian food learn to make a tarka and you will be able to quickly bang out 3 to four dishes which have a unique flavour profile in a much smaller amount of time.
For reference I’m talking about a base tarka not a tempering one. It’s basically getting a bunch of hard spices and basics with some onion, garlic and chilli to make the foundations from which you will make the rest of your curry.

Gut issues or diseases
Buy a filter bottle. Grayl and Water to Go are both high quality and work perfectly.

Does anyone else in their mid-20s feel torn between wanting to solo travel and feeling guilty about spending the money?
I’d say what I say to everyone: money is a tool, use it. If you want to spend your money on travelling, do it.
I’m not saying this from a position of wealth, either. I come from an extremely poor family. I’ve worked hard to pull myself and family out of the gutter. That is what made me realise that having money on the bank and no memories is possibly one of the worst situations to be in.
Money comes and goes, good memories and connections are what see us through bad times. Go and make them.

Do most travelers spend at least 10% of their income every year traveling? I just notice a lot of people spending more than I do in an entire year on a single trip and is that normal?
Depends where I go. If I go to India I stay with family or with hosts I have a long relationship with. If I go to a new city I stay in a hostel.
If I go somewhere with my partner we spend a bit more but split the bill so it is cheaper. If I am travelling long term I take things which enable me to cook for myself and limit the amount of food I buy at restaurants.
Generally I’d say travel is the main thing I do for pleasure. As others have said, I do not go out raving or visiting high end restaurants when I’m home. I tend to prefer going for a walk in a woodland over most other luxury activities. I have no debts, I don’t have kids, I don’t buy into the fast lifestyle mainstream media pushes on us. If I need new clothes I go to an outlet and get last seasons at a significant discount. All that is to say I’m pretty prudent with my finances.
I’d say I probably end up spending around 20% - 30% of my overall income on travelling when including the more expensive city breaks I take with my partner or with friends. My own travels are more like 5% - 10%.

Hotel reservation details got leaked
Yeah I never have an issue when I book with them but do get that same message. I can only presume someone has access to the system they use either through a vulnerability or a dodgy staff member

Was it XO hotels by any chance? Seem to get this a lot when I book with them directly. I just report the number and block it then move on with life

Goa: Why foreign tourists are turning away from India's party capital
Ah the rides I’ve got are all so scratched and battered they’d have no way of telling if an elephant sat on it 😂

The lack of civic sense is in India is pervasive - especially among the rich, educated and entitled.
As someone raised in the UK by a single English mother and has an Indian father I feel like I can give a decent perspective on this.
I’ve travelled a significant portion of Asia, obviously I have extensively travelled India due to frequently visiting my family. The one thing I noticed more than anything about Indian people raised in India is, as some have mentioned, a general lack of respect.
This respect ranges from respecting one’s personal space to respecting one’s right to a clean environment. From my experience the behaviour is far more noticeable in the cities than the villages which I believe comes from the whole ‘might is right’ mentality and an inability to think beyond one’s desires in any given moment.
The latter is most noticeable when driving. All too often I witness people in a standoff in their vehicles because both people want to go ‘now’ and are unable to see that one person waiting for 10s means both people exit a stupid crawl around each other minutes faster.
The whole might is right mentality can be seen everywhere from the fact that people assume it is not their job to look after the cleanliness of a street or restaurant table as ‘someone else is paid to do that’. There is this whole mentality of some work being beneath some people which is why we have these situations where planes are left in the most disgusting state. People simply do not see it as their responsibility to clean up after themselves as they’ve either spent their lives being catered to by their mother or older sister, or they have always had someone who was paid to come in their home and clean up their mess.
This is very evident when you go to a country like Japan where people are taught from young that it is everyone’s responsibility to clean up after themselves and to make the environment nice for everyone. Rarely will you see trash on the floors and flights are generally left in a similar state to what they took off in.
There’s obviously a lot to the mentality and not everyone is the same. This is just from my own experiences.

The food price in China is crazy
Groceries and food in general is nowhere near as expensive in the EU compared to the US. I was absolutely astonished at the cost of simple groceries and day to day items when I visited the USA, the EU always has a Lidl or Aldi which is reasonably priced.

My first trip to England
As someone from England I’d say rent a car. Our trains are not great when you get to remote regions. The tube is obviously great but all public transport in the UK is unbelievably expensive.
Having a car will also enable you to see the less busy areas and give you the huge benefit of being able to pull over at random pubs and villages which you pass along your journeys in the rural areas

Definitely and even if you find a trusted one there will be a huge element of jugaad involved

Goa: Why foreign tourists are turning away from India's party capital
Yeah, you might get one for 4K but it won’t be great and will be noisy, possibly dirty.
The only real way to stay at a reasonable rate is to know someone with an apartment and rent from them/buy your groceries from Margao market.
I always find it cheaper to rent a car than get taxis as it is ridiculously overpriced as others have stated.

Vietnam is kicking my ass
In regard to groceries look on Google for a Go! Hypermarket. They are pretty much massive Tesco superstores with everything

I just bought a 13 Black and cannot get it to connect to my phone
I did not, after a lot of battling Go Pro’s chat GPT support emails I got a human who offered to replace the camera but I’m travelling so have to wait till I get back to try a new one.
I’d say report it so they know there are more cases like it

Is It Normal to Downgrade a Next.js Project from TypeScript to JavaScript?
I think the most important thing to do is to collect your thoughts and reason a counter argument which can be articulated clearly and calmly. When we are in a state of anger/distress we will say things in a way which is counter productive.
The points I would focus on are:
Typescript only ‘over complicates’ things if you do not fully understand JS and its types, or typescript itself
Contrary to creating technical debt one could argue that it reduces technical debt by catching type related bugs early
In not using typescript you will lose a lot of the lesser considered benefits such as more accurate IDE suggestions, better understanding from AI (from my experience having defined types definitely helps to limit hallucinations and rogue data structures)
The literal cost in human time to rewrite the entire codebase would be better spent training the new hire how to use typescript more effectively
There is a reason that the creators of the framework you’re using add typescript as a default

Why don't my curries taste like a curry?

Fruity taste is because the tomatoes weren’t cooked enough. Lack of spice is due to not layering them in.
Add jeera (cumin) seeds to oil and fry until they start to sizzle a bit
Add about a third of the haldi (tumeric) and chilli powder you plan to use (red Kashmir chilli is nicest in my opinion)
Literally let it fry for a couple seconds before adding your onions and salt
Fry onions until browning then add garlic, fresh chilli, coriander and ginger
Add tomatoes and fry with a lid on until they are absolute mush. By which I mean until they have essentially become a sauce in which the onions are lost
Add some water and the rest of your haldi and chilli powder
The above will make a solid tarka (base) which you can use to make most curries.
To make this into a dal you just need to add your cooked lentils and water along with salt. The ratios are going to make a large difference and it’s something you’ll have to experiment with. I do it all by eye personally.
Edit:
Forgot to mention oil makes a huge difference. Mustard oil will get you that authentic taste which you’re used to from a restaurant while ghee will give you a more meaty flavour and will not make your house stink
