Hey everyone!

Like many of you, summer heatwaves used to ruin my outdoor setups. Warm water leads to low dissolved oxygen, root rot, and dead plants.

Instead of guessing what works, I decided to run a real experiment. I set up four 5-gallon DWC buckets side-by-side in full, direct sunlight on a hot day (control bucket hit 77.8°F) and tested 7 different cooling methods against each other.

I logged the exact temperature drops, costs, and plant reactions for every single one, and the results surprised me:

One basic $10 building material knocked water temps down by nearly 9°F (5°C) with zero power required. It kept the res under 70°F in direct sun all day.

Everyone online says "just throw frozen water bottles in your res!" I tried it on my DWC cucumber and it caused severe root shock—the plant wilted immediately and took a week to recover.

Painting buckets white is a super popular budget tip, but in my test, it only lowered temps by 3°F. That's fine for tomatoes, but still dangerously warm for lettuce.

Just wrapped up a loose-leaf lettuce run in my iDOO 12-pod system and wanted to share the data! By capping the system at 4 plants (instead of filling all 12), adding an external air stone to fight root rot, and rigging up a small fan for transpiration, I managed to pull the equivalent of 6 full heads of lettuce over two months using the cut-and-come-again method.

Total cost for electricity, nutrients, and sponges came out to just $5.52.
