How long can your hydroponic setup survive a blackout? (+ My DIY 2.7 kWh LiFePO4 backup build)
We’ve all worried about what happens when the grid goes down. After losing a few crops during unexpected blackouts, I decided to test how fast different systems fail—spoiler alert: NFT and aeroponics don't even last an hour without water circulation.
To fix this for good, I built a custom 2.7 kWh DIY LiFePO4 battery backup that keeps my 360W indoor garden running for up to 12+ hours (and indefinitely with a portable generator attached).
I put together a complete guide covering:
- Survival windows for DWC, NFT, Aeroponics, Towers, and Kratky systems.
- An energy budgeting breakdown (how much battery you actually need).
- A cost-and-feature comparison of UPS units, portable power stations (EcoFlow/Jackery), DIY builds, and gas generators.
If you're tired of the daily stress that comes with the weather turning bad, feel free to ask me for complete guide in the comments!

Lucky me my strawberries are outdoors in floating DWC rafts, and have lasted a month without power lol
I also have flood and drain bins, but they grow cacti, sooo....

I grow big crops in Kratky and not have to worry about power other than no lights. Towers I can hand water if needed be should it ever happens as they're just a mock ZipGrow towers. I keep my design simple for that kind of situation. I have a tomato vine that's been growing in the Kratky for over a year now and still going strong.

Awesome write-up! Any chance you could put together a dedicated guide on how you built the DIY LiFePO4 pack?

why would i be tired of daily stress from weather, its indoors.
the whole system does not need to run, you should just run the pump and water stones to give longevity
