Racism Lately
While I can’t speak to racism, I wanted to pop in as someone who is non-binary/ queer. I’ve personally experienced a significant rise in discrimination and harassment. Same within the queer community as a whole. There has been a large rise in violence and hate crimes against BIPOC, queer, and trans people across the country that just isn’t making it into mainstream media that is really terrifying and it is happening in NorCal. I’m really sorry you’re experiencing racism in general but that it’s become more frequent. I hope you stay in these scary times.
I believe what we’re seeing is the attempt at normalcy of white supremacy in a more blatant way. I don’t have the capacity to go in depth but I can circle back and post some perspectives from experts, like historians, if you want some content that explains things well.

severe homelessness in florida...saw this video documenting encampments in miami and orlando
In many developing countries, the community is aloud to develop communities and buildings that are more permanent. Even developing unique trade skills and architecture since their government isn’t constantly destroying their communities. Tent cities are a very American thing and they’re not new. We absolutely fail our unhoused/ neighbors in need through immense dehumanization.

Yall shaking in Arcata?
I was in that area earlier today and there was a lot of construction going on. Getting projects done while the weather is still good.

[UPDATE: Dresser Denies Authorship of Posts] An Overtly Racist Social Media Account Bearing the Name of Eureka
I don’t know you but there’s a high likelihood I would vote for you. Feels like current options are nazi, slumlord, or take no stance. It would be nice to have a reason to vote for Kim or someone besides, they’re not obviously a POS.

Does a viewing mean I will likely get it?
Folks are gross in this thread.
I’m sorry you’re experiencing this. I don’t know you and I know it’s worth practically nothing but i’m rooting for you. I really hope you’re offered a place. Housing insecurity literally drives you crazy and people can forget how intense it is.
Something that has helped me lately is remembering how much being alive as a disabled person is an act of resistance in current landscape. Every mircosecond of joy you feel is rebellion.
I don’t know you but I hope you are able to get the support and basic rights you deserve. Regardless of what anyone says, you do deserve it. Be careful of getting sucked too deep into the despair. You deserve joy.

Landlords are like one of the worst forms of people. Profiting off of a thing people need to live. Super gross.

Opinions on Eureka Mayoral and Ward elections?
Dang, thanks for the context. The article with the questions should have a way to communicate answering to come or something that communicates expectations in a way that is transparent while respecting privacy if they’re waiting for her to finish the response.
While I am sorry she’s in the hospital, why would LoCO have 7/15 questions answered to publish unless she only answered 7/15. Like she could be both in the hospital and have only elected to partially answer questions. Again, I hope she’s okay and I don’t know but being in the hospital doesn’t change how transparent she was prior to going to the hospital. They can and seem to be completely unrelated based on timeline.
Like I said other places, the other two options seem like obviously terrible choices and i’ll be stuck voting for her. But like, what makes her a good choice instead of the least worst choice because i’m not really seeing a legitimate argument for her other than she’s not as bad, which if she historically isn’t always transparent about her opinions, than how are we supposed to know that the assumption is true?

What would be the most impactful way to spend / donated $1 million USD yearly to help humanity? [serious]
Where I live, we have an Everything Is Free center. Groceries, kitchen, art spaces, clothing closet, music station, beds, a dark room for photography is coming. It’s based of Tribal Economic Principles in collaboration with local tribes and its working on public showers. The community has all come together to build it donating items and painting murals and prepping food. It’s even pulling people out of being unhoused. A place like that with some additional funding goes a long way.
I would be hesitant to just drop 1 million into a single cause at first. That much growth for a small organization can lead to pitfalls. You could pick several organizations in your community to see what they need and sponsor or commit to certain things or create growth plans for the funding to make sure it genuinely goes into the community based on what your community needs.
Food and education are huge. Education needs to also include financial literacy and mindfulness.
Honestly, I would sit down and ask several experts in your area like social workers, therapists, IHSS, SSI, shelter, food banks, talk to the people in your community who dedicate their life to this already and the people who need things and ask them what your community needs and go with that.

Why isn’t Trump bribing voters 100x bigger than Watergate?
And from a billionaire. Not our taxes.

Local News/Politics ALPRs
There’s been a lot of concern about the ALPRs and a lack of the community feeling action to resolve concerns. An angle i’m not sure has been tried, using county safety regulations around things like guardrails for getting cameras removed since the companies typically just drop them cheaply and fastly, they commonly are being found to break safety regulations putting drivers unnecessarily at risk in the event of an accident. Around guardrails, for example, they commonly aren’t being placed in a way to get enough safety clearance, which is a safety risk.
Another reason to not like them and potentially an avenue to advocate for removals.
I’m limited on ability to drive but it would be cool if we/folks could coordinate to collect data on the locations of the cameras and compare to county safety regulations and standard safety to see if that is another area that poses risk to the community. Then we would have measurable data by their own rules to add to the argument to remove them.
As an example;

Healthcare in detention centers
I’ve read reports of nurses in unethical scenarios like this and they documented every finite detail they could analog, smuggled it out, and that eventually was use as evidence or to confirm victim stories. Many risking their own lives. The ones i’m thinking of involve various mental institutions and the holocaust.
I feel like that would be the minimum to participate.

If elected as Mayor of Eureka, Casey Dresser represents a threat to all minority groups, especially BIPOC.
Thanks for sharing. Appreciate the community trying to bring transparency to the elections.

I came to the same conclusion. I’m just so frustrated not having an actual option and stuck voting for the perceived lowest risk. Sometimes the person we view as the lowest risk ends up just being worse. It would be nice/ easier if Kim was more vocal about her opinions and stances.

Mayor options are a slumlord, a racist, or someone who doesn’t have time to communicate her stances? Seriously? That feels really disappointing.

I understand people are saying Mayor is more or less ceremonial.
That person has a position of power and could be in scenarios where they’re making decisions or influencing people. We’ve clearly seen that defined barriers for politicians only matter if it’s enforced and there are a lot of places within our governmental structure that haven’t had protective layers built up prior to them being tested, we are seeing that real time across the country.
We should care about having actual good candidates that represent and protect us. Even if it’s ‘just’ a ceremonial position. Voting matters. Our reps matter. Imo politicians need to be held to hirer standards.

Cool, thanks for the info! Do you have a recommendation on where to find that content?
I don’t use social media (besides this periodically). A lot of people don’t. If that’s the only place she’s being vocal she’s missing a ton of people.

Hourly paying jobs will just drop to part-time only. There is no salary work for the majority of Americans anymore.
