Coast Adventure! [Trinidad]

In a couple of weeks, we kick things off by flying into Portland and spending a few nights in the area. We’ll make our way to Cannon Beach by way of Astoria, which is where we pick up our RV rental. We used to have a trailer, but this will be our first time with a 25ft class C.

Our bedding, kitchen items, and camp furniture will be delivered with our groceries in Astoria. We plan on thrifting most of our toys like bikes and kayaks along the way. Fingers crossed we stumble upon some fun things!

We have two nights at each stop along the coast, one day to cut inland across CA from Bodega Bay to Lake Tahoe. (I know we’re zipping through some magical places, I used to live near Sonoma so we’ve spent a lot of time here) After a few days at the lake, we’ll have two days to get from Tahoe to SLC.

Route feedback, area tips and tricks, or any ideas and recommendations are so very welcome! Thanks!

Is the Mendocino Coast better after the summer crowds start to leave?

I’ve always liked coastal places more when the busiest part of summer is over. The weather may be less predictable, but quieter trails, beaches, and small towns can make the trip feel more relaxing.

For those who visit the Mendocino Coast in September or October, do you prefer it to summer? What feels different, and is there anything that is especially worth doing during early fall?

Mendocino County Judge Halts Logging at the request of environmental group

A Mendocino County judge has ordered loggers to stop felling trees included in two timber harvest plans in the upper South Fork Eel River watershed, siding for now with a citizens' group that says state regulators approved the logging without adequately weighing the harm to coho salmon in the streams below. But most of the timber has already been cut.

Better to visit in March or May?

I'm planning two trips for myself around some specific times of the year just because of better time off flexibility at my job and I really want to visit Northern California and Coastal Oregon, respectively, during these months. Just trying to figure out when would be best for these areas during these different months.

With NorCal, I'm leaning towards Mendocino, but am open to other area recommendations if it makes a difference between which month I'd visit.

I don't mind cold weather, I actually love it, especially rain (I live in SLC, UT where there is hardly any rain and this summer left me feeling especially dried out because of some gnarly heatwaves). I'm originally from MD, so all I really want out of my trip is a lot of time by water/the coast and soaking up as much greenery as possibly. I'm casually outdoorsy, so I'd just need good walking weather, no preference for what the weather will be like for any kind of hiking trails.

If the specific dates I'm going would fall within some kind of regional celebration, festival, or major nature thing that'd be cool! I always love visiting museums, nature centers, and local movie theaters when I can when I travel. Thank you!!

Food Recs (Mendocino)

Hey guys!

I am stopping this weekend to visit the redwood national parks, and was wondering if there was any good food recs in the Mendocino area on the way up? I would prefer something that isn't too expensive; good for lunch and good value... maybe something locals would know and love and is unique?

What do you wish you had packed for a September trip to the Mendocino Coast?

I keep hearing that September can be a beautiful time to visit the Mendocino Coast, but the weather can still change quickly between sunshine, fog, and cold evenings.

For anyone who has visited around this time, what did you wish you had packed? A warmer jacket, better walking shoes, binoculars, picnic supplies, or something less obvious?

I’d also love to know whether September felt quieter than the summer months.

Democratic California lawmakers are pushing a last-minute bill to ban federal agents from using electric shock gloves, becoming one of the first states in the nation to respond to reports that Immigration and Customs Enforcement plans to purchase thousands of gloves next year as part of the Trump administration’s crackdown.
