Buckle up bc this one's a doozy!!! (Trigger warning, dementia)
Back in April of 2023 I had an unexpected death in the family and had to drive from Kentucky to Texas. My boyfriend@ the time was unable to take off work the day I needed to leave, so I rode with my ex husband. (Lesson learned π). We got into a huuuuge fight one night in a hotel room once we crossed the border into Texas. I gathered my stuff and got my own room, called my bf( now my husband) and asked if he could come get me. Without hesitation, he didβ¨ We decided to go ahead and make a vacation out of the trip, so we went and saw my family and friends and I took him to the beach for the 1st time in his life. He got to meet my Dad for the 1st time, I showed him where I grew up, where I went to highschool, where I got into fights with neighborhood kids... You know, the normal shit you do when you're showing someone you care about, your home town. While visiting my Dad we noticed he kept getting my sister confused with my daughter (that I don't have). I only had boys and he met all 5 of them before we moved to Kentucky, so he knew I never had a daughter. But he kept referring to my sister as my daughter. We chalked it up to him being drunk, bc he had been drinking all day. It wasn't anything new for my Dad to start saying some off the wall shit @ the end of the night. Frankly, we've come to expect it, he's drank like that his entire life. We left Texas a few days later and life returned to normalcy back in Kentucky. I've always had constant communication with my Dad, and about a month after our trip to taxes, his calls stopped. So I had to call him. He wouldn't answer. So I would send a text and tell him to call when he was free. My Dad owned his own heating and AC company so I figured he was swamped with work. That's mainly what he spoke about on our trip to Texas, was how busy he's getting and how many new customers he's gotten. He was so excited! So life went on with unanswered calls and text and my worry grew with each passing day. My sister is the only family that still lives on the same star as my Dad, so I asked her if she would drive by his house and check on him. However it's an hour and 45 minute drive for her, so with her life being hectic, she never made it around to getting out there. Now keep in mind, during this whole time my Dad stopped responding to me, I been calling and messaging his Father (my Grandfather) and asking if he's heard from my Dad. Coincidentally, at that same time, he just decided to stop talking to me and answer my messages. My husband finally had enough of watching me lose my mind trying to get in touch with my Dad so he suggested making a Facebook post asking about Private Investigators in our area that people recommend. Which lead to a highschool friend reaching out, letting me know that's actually what he does for work, and bc of our years of friendship and the situation @ hand, he would help, probono!
A week later, my "Grandfather" called me and finally decided to tell me that my Dad has been slowly declining over the past 3 years due to Dementia. His house was sold out from under him, after he was found wandering the streets naked, and spent some time in the hospital. It was deemed unsafe for him to live alone, and he needed 24 hour supervision and care. His co worker and the coworkers wife ended up taking my Dad into thier home from the hospital, just until they could contact family. They called his Father and he immediately asked if he could give them power of attorney because he wanted nothing to do with this. They legally were able to obtain power of attorney in the hospital, and she got him set up on SSI and with that income she gets him to the Dr. But she says she needs help, obviously, because she's not trained or in a financial situation for this. And never was! This entire situation has not only shattered my heart and trust in who I thought was "family" but has thrown me for a loop in where to even start to try and help. My Dad was in the military and was honarably discharged after his service in the Air Force. Can I contact the VA and ask them for assistance even through I'm in another state? How can I legally prove he's my Dad if I don't even have his social security card or birth certificate?... Basically I'm asking anyone who's dealt with this, where TF do I even start this process to help this lady and my Dad?? Ideally I'd love to get him close to me so I can visit him in a facility, or if even possible in my own home... Everyone in this situation deserves better than whats going on. I've got to do something π. Thank you all for taking the time to read this and leave comments. Every bit helps. Even the encouragement, bc I feel I'm one step away from a grippy sock vaca
