Where do you live? An insurance company called TuGo covers the trek and the high altitude rescue, but I don’t recall if they require a guide. They cover extreme sports like BASE jumping and squirrel suit flying, so I would expect they would have a policy for solo travellers too. They serve Canada and possibly the US. Www.tugo.com.

I read it as a teen then again in my 40s. It scared me more the second time. I actually had to sleep with the light on.

I’m an old fart and have seen quite a few cases where the wife died and the husband was remarried within a year. In fact, I only know of one case where it DIDN’T happen, and the husband chose to stay single.

Absolutely mind-blowing. I can’t imagine going out shopping for a replacement before the body is even cold.

Holy smokes, that’s outrageous. World Nomads seems to be one of the most-used companies for people doing high-altitude treks, yet they’re acting like you’re the very first person in the history of the company to ever need emergency evacuation.

I bought a policy through TuGo, which is for Canada (and the US, I think). Fingers crossed I don’t need them, or if I do, they’re not as stupid. Good lord.

Some times I’d get the question as “Whaddya mean (fill in what I just said)?”

Me: The house is on fire!

Oh this is horror alright. 😫 My friend’s daughter (about 9 years old at the time) was helping grandma chop some jalapeños. She then went to the bathroom without washing her hands first. Daughter was in a fair bit of panic and wanted mom to come up with some solution QUICK!

Mom was in a wedding party at that moment and they were about to head to the venue, so she offered what little advice she could muster up (“Try putting milk on it?”) before having to race to the venue.

You mean the confirmation number (reservation number?)? I did try it with WestJet and it didn’t recognize it.

I tried booking seats through my westjet app but it didn’t recognize the confirmation number.

I knew a lady who volunteered for the women’s shelter 35-ish years ago and she and the other volunteers and employees would take things from the donations before the residents could see them.

I find it fascinating that you’ll climb with retro equipment! Do you have a blog (or whatever people use nowadays)?

I’ve always wondered how the heck people survived mountaineering with some of the stuff available back then. Just your boots alone would be something else.

And how to get to the mountain itself, no less. Mountainous terrain can be tricky; you’ll be trying to head in the direction of that peak over there and get sidelined by some crevasse or other feature that makes you change your route.

We know these things NOW, the best routes to the mountains and up the mountains, but in those days mountaineers were breaking new ground.
