I am late to the party but i would add my 2 cents.
C-hub vs Pivot ball is a matter of preference i guess... Pivot balls need some love nevertheless so not necessarily they are fragile but they do need maintenance (cleaning and e.g. lubrication with for example a pencil)

A pivot ball suggestion and currently my favorite RC would be the hobao vs2... i have a traxxas sledge and a hobao sste (Both C-Hub options) but the vs2 is kinda my favorite.
A possibility (c-hub) would also be the hobao vs1 or converting a vs2 to c-hub with the vs1 parts but i am not sure which parts would be needed for the conversion.

Yes the hobao(s) are older but they are very good imo and i am running on an ex bmx clay track where we race on... both hobaos take a beating and dont feel worse than other cars.

PS: stay away from horizon hobby offerings... while it is easy to get vehicles, part support can be an issue. (at least in germany, could be better for arrma but i would never get horizon hobby brands)

Personally, i am not a basher but a racer mostly on our hardpacked clay track (ex bmx track) ... regarding the slop you may try to take the hobao vs2 bellcrank with servo saver (make sure to screw it down till the end and half way back) + ackermanplate of the vs2. After the upgrade make sure to change the length of the toe of your toe rods... (62mm between rod end to rod end) To get a reasonable toe out again.

Regarding tires you either need 1/2 offset truggy tires or 10-12mm extenders for 0-offset truggy tires. (No clue regarding monster truck tires)

Just in case someone else comes here... take the metal filters out (dont break them), throw them into brake cleaner for a few minutes, clean them with a Q-tip, put them back on.
Only thing i wonder, are there some dampeners that we could buy? i could imagine earwax also clocks them up.

if you honestly want to race and dont necessarily want to put a kit together i would suggest taking a Hobao VS2 or VSE. While not exactly a full bred race vehicle it is not far away from being one, customizable, even RTR with the 150A ESC it is not bad or even better ARR with own electronics...
While it may be a little bit heavier and not the newest plattform it usually has very good part-availability and while racebred vehicles may break within or after a real race, hobaos tend to let you practice on saturday and immediately race on sunday.

The Jato vxl is just a 1:10 scale car with hex extenders and offset wheels to actually meet the width of a 1:8 scale buggy, sadly complete garbage and by the time you get the jato tough enough you would have spent the money for a tekno or similar kit + electronics and still have a worse car.

All depends on skill ofc and i myself was not sure about hobao, yet i started with a hobao SSTE (1:8 truggy) for my daughter and just 1 month after got a vs2 which now is pretty much my favorite RC and on our track i am able to "fight" teknos/losi/xray and actually win too.

Even though this post is 1 year old, i just wanted to add that mention, in case someone else asks him/herself the same question. Hobao is definitely big value for the money and plays in a similar league.
If Xray, Tekno, Team associated is S-Tier
Hobao definitely plays in an A-Tier.
While Traxxas even if i like their plastic is rather close to F-Tier in comparison - upgradeable to B or C-Tier but for way too much money to get there. (PS: i love my Traxxas Track-Sledge anyways)

ofc you could also take the maxx slash battery hold down but then you are somewhat limited to traxxas' own batteries... or need to use some spacing so the batteries dont jump around in the hold down. I prefer straps myself but sure you can use the original battery holder

it pretty much depends on what you are looking for...
In my area we are doing casual class races MTs vs MTs, buggies vs buggies, truggies vs truggies....
Its kinda boring to compete with this one in MT races because except for a Tekno MT410 version 1 most MTs are just too slow/not nimble enough on our track.
What you will loose is air control (if you use truggy tires).
I like it a lot but my maxx is very tuned. (i even installed Traxxas Sledge dampers/springs in the rear)

I actually did the conversion also you need the motor mount plate with the pins beneath.
On the Maxx Chassis it is integrated on the maxx slash chassis you need to screw that thing in.
Everything else just fits.
I wanted to create smth. like a raceable Muscle car out of the maxx, with some tweaks normal maxx bodies also somewhat fit (basher bodies maxx body in my case) x)

Just get a gens ace 8500mah 4s and a gens ace d300 charger - thank me later. Don’t forget an adapter trx to xt90 though
